Chapter 72: Chapter 68: The Great Search

16:00

Sunny and slightly slanted, the sky is clear.

Yuchi Station is covered by thick snow, and a heavy train full of armor is parked inside, surrounded by a dozen zombies.

After the apocalypse, perhaps due to the overpopulation of Blue Star, wandering zombies seemed to have become an indispensable landscape between heaven and earth; these zombies constantly scratched on the armored plates of the train, making squeaking noises.

Yet, even if these zombies were to scratch their fingers raw, they couldn’t make a dent.

It’s unclear whether it’s because of the noise inside the carriage or the scent of meat wafting out that the zombies howl from time to time, as if prodding the memories of their time as humans.

Inside Carriage 1, there’s an unusual afternoon tranquility.

Braised pork, canned fruit, seaweed soup, cola, appearing extremely luxurious in this apocalyptic setting.

"We’re done for, eating so well behind Sister KIKI’s back, she’s definitely going to be angry when she wakes up," Sha Sha said, taking a sip of soup and suddenly looking towards KIKI.

"That won’t happen."

Lin Xian said meaningfully, "When she wakes up, I’ll have to treat her to a big meal myself."

"Really?"

"She exerted so much effort; of course, we have to reward her."

Sha Sha nodded repeatedly, "Right, right, right, we even flew yesterday, Sister KIKI is too awesome."

Rustle~

Lin Xian turned his head and found Chen Sixuan already geared up, wearing a thick coat, and carrying an automatic rifle, showing an excited expression on her face for some reason.

"Teacher Chen, you seem quite eager?"

"A little."

Chen Sixuan gravely said, "Before, you always asked me to stay by the train, but now I can go out with you all; I’m certainly willing to contribute."

Actually, Lin Xian had also planned to have Chen Sixuan stay by the train this time, but considering it was daylight and time was limited, he needed more manpower; he had also already removed all the locks on the cockpit door, creating a mechanical structure that could only be opened from the inside, which was relatively safe. Therefore, he decided to bring Chen Sixuan along.

Now that they had weapons, she wasn’t completely helpless, and indeed could help quite a lot.

"Okay, but be careful not to shoot randomly; our main goal is still to scavenge. If there’s danger, let me handle it first."

Chen Sixuan hummed in acknowledgment.

After finishing their first steaming hot lunch in the escape, Lin Xian and the four prepared to hurry into the city.

He instructed Building and Sha Sha to drive the SUV, which had more space for supplies.

He and Chen Sixuan opted to ride motorcycles.

Same old plan, he aimed to scout for a truck in the city; they would load it onto a flatbed trailer along with the supplies and he would consume it all, wasting nothing.

As the sun began to set, Lin Xian, Chen Sixuan, Building, and Sha Sha, all armed, drove the SUV off the trailer and rode the motorcycle out of the platform, circling onto the highway, heading towards Yuchi City.

Buzz buzz buzz~

The SUV and the motorcycle, one in front of the other, engines roaring, speeding along the road.

Located at the base of the mountain range, Yuchi City is bathed in sunlight, utterly silent within, with the road lined by all sorts of disabled and abandoned vehicles, corpses, and scattered luggage buried under thick layers of snow.

"Ha~"

Inside the car, Sha Sha on the passenger side of the SUV breathed a foggy breath against the window, her little face worriedly said, "The snow is getting heavier."

"Sha Sha, see if you can find some things for warmth on the way — blankets, beds, clothes, and collect more of them."

Lin Xian’s motorcycle passed behind, instructing her.

As the number of people increased, the need for warming supplies also grew; he had previously scavenged household items from a furniture mall in Jiang City which made Carriage 1 quite accommodating.

Now two people were living in Carriage 2, and Building was guarding at night in Carriage 5; these were essential.

"Mmm mmm," Sha Sha lowered the window and nodded

Screech~

Building stepped on the brakes at that moment, with several haphazardly parked vehicles directly blocking the road ahead.

"Wait a moment."

Lin Xian, riding a motorcycle with Chen Sixuan, maneuvered around the SUV and stopped, the streets deserted with distant screams echoing from the shadows of a dark alley.

He saw a dump truck parked by the curb, its door half-open, revealing a decaying, stiff driver’s body suspended by a seatbelt. He raised his knife, slashed through the seatbelt, and the body tumbled down stiffly.

He then climbed into the truck, activating his Mechanical Heart, quickly perceiving that there were no issues with the vehicle, his eyes brightening.

"Building, help me lift the motorcycle up."

Lin Xian pulled Chen Sixuan into the passenger seat while speaking to Building.

"Are we using this truck to haul stuff?" Chen Sixuan asked, surprised.

Lin Xian nodded with a smile.

Such a large dump truck could not only carry a lot of items but also serve as a road-clearing vehicle to push through obstacles.

Clang.

After Building lifted the motorcycle into the dump truck’s empty trailer, he pulled the door closed, revved the engine, and called out to others outside,

"You guys get in, I’ll lead the way with this."

"Okay!"

Seeing Lin Xian’s commanding presence, Sha Sha and Building were visibly shaken. Both vehicles started, with Lin Xian driving the dump truck directly into the cars blocking the road, its powerful engine roaring, quickly attracting zombies from several neighboring streets.

Buzz!

The dump truck bulldozed its way through, banging into surrounding vehicles and heading towards the center of the city.

Bang Bang Bang!

In the evening sun, the streets of Yuchi City watched the dump truck charge wildly, its thunderous noise continually drawing zombies from around.

Regardless of whether it was cars or zombies, everything was crushed under its passage, Lin Xian flooring the gas pedal, his Mechanical Heart operating at high speeds, maximizing the engine’s revolutions.

On his own, the destruction caused by his Mechanical Heart and those few skills would indeed be limited.

However, piloting these industrial machines, the power unleashed was worlds apart.

The dump truck and the SUV, one in front of the other, quickly burst into what used to be a bustling commercial district, likely the former pedestrian street, with various shops and restaurants on both sides, now all dilapidated with wandering zombies sparsely scattered inside the streets and alleys.

"This is the place."

After clearing a path, Lin Xian picked up the walkie-talkie and spoke to Building and Sha Sha, and immediately the two vehicles split up.

Sha Sha headed towards the mall and electronics stores, while Lin Xian and Chen Sixuan drove towards a transformer station on the outskirts.

In the passenger seat, Chen Sixuan, gripping a gun tightly, clutched the handle overhead. Seeing her tense expression, Lin Xian began,

"It’s daytime, those kinds of monsters shouldn’t appear."

Chen Sixuan took a deep breath, "I...I’m just a bit nervous."

Lin Xian nodded, "Don’t worry, it’ll be fine."

Buzz, the dump truck raced along, drawing a large number of zombies behind, and soon, a power station loomed into view, "Here we are."

He quickly turned the steering wheel, crossing the shoulder directly towards the station’s perimeter wall.

Buzz!!!

Thump!

The dump truck boldly smashed through the wall, breaching into the transformer station.

Crash, bricks and rubble flew, creating a large hole in the perimeter.

Lin Xian got out of the truck, approached the wall breached by the vehicle, and raised his hands, a multitude of steel materials soared out, quickly forming a simple steel fence.

Clang!

The upgraded speed of Mechanical Manufacturing was extremely fast, and with such a simple structure, it took only moments to forge a wall of steel bars, and then he hammered steel pins into it. As Chen Sixuan alighted from the vehicle, she saw that Lin Xian had already encircled the vehicle-created hole with a steel grate.

Agh!

The warmth of the freshly made steel wall hadn’t even faded when numerous zombies began surging forward, their undead claws frantically scratching through the steel mesh.

Lin Xian’s use of his Mechanical Superpower seemed increasingly adept, leaving Chen Sixuan quite amazed.

"Can it even be done like this?"

Lin Xian glanced calmly at the gathering zombies, then turned and said, "Killing them all is impossible; it would just waste time."
