Chapter 42: The hard-earned chicken feet

The dinner distributed from the base was a bun, a very hard bun. People with bad teeth could barely bite into it, but given the current situation, it was already good that the base was providing food—nobody dared to complain.

Those with bad teeth would soak the bun in water until it softened a bit and then slowly grind it with their teeth. They managed to eat it.

Su Yinhe and his group didn’t queue up; they weren’t short of food.

Su Yinhe’s space had no ready-to-eat food, only some instant meals, and she didn’t feel like having an instant meal for dinner. Chi Yan felt the same.

So they decided to cook on the spot.

Chi Yan, holding supplies, walked around their vicinity, and before long, their area had expanded significantly.

...

Then he took out a small generator, and Su Yinhe brought out several pots, along with pork ribs, yellow croaker, carrots, corn, bok choy… numerous ingredients.

Then both of them looked at Lin Murong simultaneously.

With empty hands and nothing to contribute, Lin Murong sighed, took over the ingredients, and began to cook.

First, he cooked the rice.

Then he blanched the pork ribs, drained them, and then threw the blanched pork ribs, corn, and carrots into a pot, added water, salted it, and started to cook.

While the soup was cooking, he began preparing the other dishes.

This chapter is updat𝙚d by freeweɓnovel.cøm.

Pan-fried saury, pan-fried yellow croaker, stir-fried meat with chili, fish-flavored shredded pork, and stir-fried bok choy.

By the time these dishes were done, the Carrot Corn Pork Rib Soup was also ready.

Chi Yan skillfully set out chairs and a table, while Su Yinhe took care of serving the dishes.

After serving, she also brought out a bottle of orange juice, and poured it into three cups.

When Lin Murong sat down, he was still a bit dazed—how come their coordination was so perfect?

Lin Murong looked at the others munching on buns and then at the meal in front of him. He shrank his neck, feeling like they were being a bit too showy. Was it really safe from being snatched away?

“Lin… Murong, you’re quite a good cook,” Su Yinhe complimented as she enjoyed the fish, starting with the pan-fried saury.

After a couple of bites, she continued praising him. It was rare to see a boy who could cook well.

“Right? Back when I used to go out with Chi Yan, I was the cook. I trained myself,” Lin Murong said, feeling a bit sad. He used to be the type who would explode the kitchen.

After the apocalypse, he had met Chi Yan and was forced to learn.

Too many tales accompanied by tears.

Su Yinhe: “So does Chi Yan not know how to cook?”

Lin Murong: “He knows how, but he thinks it’s too much hassle and dirty.”his desire to vent reached its peak, ignoring Chi Yan’s murderous gaze and began outlining in detail how he still was a kitchen rookie, and Chi Yan’s relentless pushing for him to cook.

“I almost blew myself up once. I told him I couldn’t learn, but he didn’t believe me and insisted I practice. When the pot exploded, he ducked far away, not even pulling me to safety,” Lin Murong said while eating. A few bites, a few words.

Su Yinhe: “That’s tough.” Glad he’s still alive.

“It’s too much.”

Su Yinhe: “Yeah.”

“He… Ow! Chi Yan, why are you stepping on me?!”

Chi Yan: “No talking while eating or sleeping.”

“I spit. You are talking now,” Lin Murong defiantly responded, then got stepped on a few more times.

After dinner, it was still early, and the cave was noisy—Su Yinhe couldn’t sleep. Seeing this, Chi Yan gave her some earplugs.

After thanking him, she hugged her tablet and asked him if there was a big, flat area on the mountain where not many people went.

Before Chi Yan could respond, Lin Murong, unable to restrain himself, quickly answered,

“The mountaintop. It’s flat and big on top.” Lin Murong did that on purpose; having been stepped on a few times by Chi Yan during dinner, he had to get his revenge.

Want to be alone? Wishful thinking.

At last, he found a way to get back at Chi Yan.

“How big is it?” Can it fit her large supermarket?

“It’s really big, hmm… about a dozen times bigger than your family’s supermarket. The base wanted to use it for farming initially, but nothing would grow.” Later, they tried to breed Mutant Beasts there, but beasts that initially had no wings suddenly grew wings after two rains and flew away.

After that, some higher-ups in the base wanted to build a small outpost there, but the news leaked, and ordinary people in the base protested. That plan also fizzled out.

And so it was left abandoned.

“Why do you ask?”

“Oh, nothing.” Just looking for a spot to open her supermarket.

Always being flooded wasn’t ideal.

The time wasted could have earned her so much gold. That was her insurance for a carefree future.

When she entered her tent in the evening, Su Yinhe was researching the benefits of situating her supermarket on the mountaintop on her tablet.

Benefit one, visibility. The mountain was bald, without a single tree, only mutant tall grasses that don’t attack people. Those grasses were almost grazed bald by starving folks.

Her supermarket would definitely stand out on the mountaintop.

Benefit two, high traffic. The previous location, though close to the base, wasn’t ideal as many in the base thought her a fraud, and ordinary folks were reluctant to visit. Mostly only Superpower Users came. The numbers, relatively speaking, were a bit low. It wasn’t convenient for her money-making.

Benefit three, peace and quiet.

The cave was really too noisy, music on her headphones couldn’t drown it out. She could only endure one night maximum.

Also, though she had only left for less than a day, she was already missing her soft bed.

The tent was too small; it wasn’t enough for her to roll around in. Two rolls and she’d be out of it.

They had to keep watch at night. Although Chi Yan had a notorious reputation, if they really slept without anyone watching, someone would definitely try to steal stuff. So, they had to arrange for a night watch.

Stealing was a minor issue; murder was a major one.

After all, a lot of people wanted Chi Yan dead because of his craziness. Plus, they had been very showy all day, what with rubber boats and hotpot generators.

Now, only Chi Yan and Su Yinhe could afford such items.

In the end, it was decided that Lin Murong would watch the first half of the night, and Chi Yan the second half.

They tacitly skipped over Su Yinhe.

Chi Yan, because of some unspeakable thoughts.

Lin Murong, knowing Chi Yan’s unspeakable thoughts.

Su Yinhe didn’t even know about the need to keep watch.

Only when she finished researching the location, decided when to move the supermarket, couldn’t sleep, stretched half her body out for some air, and saw Lin Murong boredly keeping watch, did she find out.

Since she couldn’t sleep anyway, she grabbed some snacks and went over.

Lin Murong, seeing the snacks she brought, directly hailed her as a lifesaver.

Su Yinhe: “…” It’s not that serious, really, just some snacks.

“Galaxy, from now on, we’re brothers. I’ll go through fire and water for you. If you need anything, just ask me, and I’ll sort it out,” Lin Murong said tenderly as he looked at her.

Su Yinhe shivered.

The heck if she wanted to be his brother.

Su Yinhe didn’t respond, but Lin Murong didn’t care; he had unilaterally decided for Su Yinhe.

Lin Murong looked at the myriad of snacks excitedly, agonized for a long time, and then tore open a package of chicken feet and began nibbling.

He cherished the hard-to-come-by chicken feet, nibbling them earnestly. He even sucked on the bones several times, trying not to let the chicken’s life go to waste.

Watching him, Su Yinhe really wanted to tell him there were plenty more chicken feet, not to hang himself up on just one.
