Chapter 69: Chapter 69 Planted Spies

Enzo frowned, a little taken aback by her orders, but he didn’t question it.

"Yes."

He turned around to leave, but Ling Xuan’s words made him stop in his tracks.

"Enzo, how many of our men came with you?" She asked.

Enzo’s eyes narrowed slightly at "our men" but he didn’t voice out his dissatisfaction. "About 200 of them." He replied through gritted teeth.

Ling Xuan nodded. "That’s good, tomorrow I’ll start training them personally. So let them know about the schedule.

And the guards should only stay in the tower. And make sure the design I made is implemented."

Enzo’s hands tightened by his side. Training his men meant she was taking over them, and although he had already pledged loyalty to her... well it was because she had shoved poison down his throat, her decision didn’t sit well with him.

As for the design, he would admit she was smart. The design comprises four major parts. A trap a few meters away from the wall, and they include iron spikes, arrows shooting out of the wall, a pit with poisonous animals, and the last one was poison.

The mechanism was complicated. And if it were carried out, anyone who doesn’t know the right steps to follow would die without even knowing how.

It had its advantages, however, Enzo thought it was too extreme. What about if they were trying to escape from danger? More like what if the time that he would escape comes? It was too much trouble.

"I’ll inform the boys, and I’ll make sure to find a good engineer for this job," Enzo muttered.

"Good." Ling Xuan waved her hand for him to leave.

Enzo turned and walked towards the door, walking past Chris who was entering the control room.

They both exchanged a short glance before walking past each other.

"Laurel," Chris said, sitting on the chair next to her. "I’ve been looking for you." He added, his voice becoming more serious.

Ling Xuan thought she had escaped him, when she asked him to change his clothes. But she didn’t know he was so adamant that he still ended up searching for her.

Ling Xuan cleared her throat, not bothering to hide the displeasure in her eyes. "I’m busy."

Chris remained quiet, studying her facial expression... ’This is not Laurel.’ He thought to himself. No one could change their temperament that fast.

But he decided to keep watching for now.

"I’ve gotten information about the location of the Severance’s cult base. I thought you might want to know about it, but it seems I was wrong. I’ll take my leave now." Chris stood up to leave.

His life principle was never to let someone treat him as they like.

Ling Xuan watched him stand, and for a moment she truly intended to let him walk out. She had never been one to call someone back twice, and she certainly did not chase after people who chose pride over usefulness. However, information about the Severance cult was not something she could discard because of a bruised ego.

"Stop," she said.

Chris did not stop.

He took two more steps toward the door before replying calmly, "You just said you were busy."

Ling Xuan’s eyes narrowed slightly. Few people ignored her twice and still stood breathing.

"I was," she replied evenly. "But if you came all the way here to speak about the Severance cult, then speak. Or leave and don’t waste my time."

Her tone was flat, almost indifferent, yet it carried a quiet pressure that filled the room.

Chris finally turned.

For a brief second, neither of them spoke. The silence stretched, heavy but controlled, like two people testing how far the other would push.

"You could have asked properly, Laurel," Chris said, testing her reaction by calling her name.

"I did, I only stated facts. And I wasn’t the one acting with a bruised ego."

A faint scoff left his lips. "And I don’t report to people who dismiss me and label having self-respect as ego."

Ling Xuan leaned back slightly in the chair, her gaze steady on him.

"So what do you want to do, stay or leave?"

Chris held her stare, searching her face again, as if he was searching for the real Laurel. He did not miss the difference in her behavior. The Laurel he knew was gentle even when she was serious. The woman before him was composed and cold.

A crease settled in between his brows.

"I’ll only let this slide because of how important the information is," Chris said.

"Good," Ling Xuan replied. "Then we understand each other."

Another stretch of silence passed before Chris walked back and sat down, though the tension in his shoulders made it clear he had not yielded, only chosen what he believed was the more important path.

"The Severance cult has established a major base in a hotel building outside Luxebridge," he began. "From the outside, it looks like a refugee shelter, but I’m afraid it is more than that.

My people were unable to find the base for so long, and we could only finditthrough the movement of the refugees.

And they have increased their security, probably due to the explosion of one of their bases. If there is another one, I don’t know yet."

Ling Xuan’s fingers tapped once against the armrest.

"What made you think it is more than a shelter for refugees?"

Ling Xuan already knew the Severance cult’s plan from Laurel’s memories.

"A lot of guards are controlling entry and they are asking the refugees about their profession. The supplies are moved through restricted areas, and people are screened before they are allowed deeper inside. It looks nothing like charity."

A faint glint crossed her eyes.

"You mean they didn’t keep their supplies there?"

"No. Which tells me the real stockpile is hidden somewhere else. And they definitely won’t keep everything where the crowds gather."

She gave a small nod. "And that is our chance to locate the other bases. We can easily track where their supplies are coming from." She said in deep thought.

"I’ll tell my men to keep searching for their true base. Furthermore, I already have spies infiltrate their base as refugees. We will know what the Severance cult is really up to." Chris added.

His brows creased slightly in pain.

He held his chest, his breathing becoming heavier.
