Chapter 68: Chapter 68 Fool

Ronan’s voice carried desperation, but underneath it was excitement. He believed his situation had changed and Camile would finally give him a listening ear.

"I have money now, a lot of it," Ronan added.

Camile exchanged a glance with Mack before speaking again. "Where did you suddenly get the money from?"

"That is not important," Ronan replied quickly. "What matters is that I can take care of you now. You don’t have to stay there... wherever you are."

Mack stepped closer, his sharp gaze fixed on the phone as if he could see through it.

"Ask him how," Mack mouthed.

Camile nodded, immediately grasping what he meant.

"Ronan, I want to know how you got the money. The last time you tried to help me, all the cards were frozen. I don’t want to impose on you, and I don’t want you to do things you are not supposed to do because of me." Camile said in a docile tone.

A short pause came from the other end of the phone, before Ronan answered, lowering his voice as if he were sharing a secret.

"My family went bankrupt, Camile."

"What?! That can’t be true!" Camile momentarily lost her composure. How was that even possible? The Wayne family was regarded as old money, they had been prospering for ages. There was no way they could easily go bankrupt... and not to mention such an event didn’t happen in her past life.

Her mind suddenly ached for Alexander. He must be in deep trouble now. If she had been by his side, none of this would have happened.

"Unfortunately, it is true. Alexander had ended up selling all the family’s properties and stock. Even the mansion was sold... He gave me some of the money as my share. I took the money and left, I’m no fool, and I won’t stay and struggle when I can secure my own future, and not to mention they have relocated out of the city."

Camile’s fingers tightened slightly around the phone.

It didn’t sound like an ordinary financial failure... she felt there was more to it than met the eye.

"You mean all your family including Laurel had relocated out of the city?" She asked, her eyes narrowing, as the unease in her chest grew stronger.

"Yes including that b**ch. Why are you even concerned about them? Did you forget how they threw you out of the mansion?" Ronan sounded a little agitated.

Camile wanted to yell at him. He was such a fool.

Mack’s eyes darkened almost immediately. Powerful families do not abandon their roots simply to save money, not unless they knew something others didn’t.

"But they are your family, you should have gone with them," Camile said softly.

’Fool, if you had gone with them, it would have been easy for me to confirm if your family is really bankrupt or if they are pretending to be to hide in the regional area to avoid the coming apocalypse.’

Ronan scoffed. "Hide in some remote place with them and live like we are animals, or in an apocalypse? I’d rather build my business myself."

The moment the words left his mouth, Camile and Mack exchanged another glance.

"Do you know where they are relocating to? I want to see my sister, even if it is from afar. I just want to make sure she is alright." She asked, pretending to be worried.

Ronan sighed. "You are too kind and soft, Camile." He suddenly felt the urge to protect her and shield her from harm.

"I didn’t bother asking," Ronan said. "But Alexander mentioned some valley... I can’t remember the name exactly.

"Ronan, let me call you back later..."

Camile ended the call. The moment the line disconnected, silence settled heavily in the room.

Camile’s mind spiralled in thoughts. There was no way they would have learned about the apocalypse beforehand... could it be they started preparing because of the Severance cult’s warning?

But that was a week ago, it wasn’t enough time for them to make such a decisive decision.

Could Laurel... No, that was not possible. If she really came back, she would have done everything to stop her, so she believed. However, Laurel’s hostility to her was a puzzle she couldn’t quite solve. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Mack walked toward the window slowly, his hands clasped behind his back.

"A bankrupt tycoon relocating his entire family," he said. "Do you believe that story?"

Camile shook her head. Even in the past, when the apocalypse came without warning. The Wayne family had enough assets to turn things in their favour even when the bank no longer functioned.

"No wealthy family abandons everything unless survival is involved."

Mack’s gaze drifted toward the paused image of the masked blogger on the tablet. First, the weather changed ahead of prediction, then came the warning broadcast, and now a powerful family was quietly evacuating.

There were too many coincidences, and Mack did not believe in coincidence.

"Find that valley," he said calmly.

One of the men standing beside the door bowed his head before walking out.

........

Meanwhile, back in the valley, Ling Xuan was sneezing, as if someone was cursing her.

She shook her head, as she sat in the wooden chair inside the security room built along the inner wall. The sound of the pit-pat of the rain against the room echoed loudly outside. Her attention was fixed on the large monitor before her, where different sections of the valley were displayed through surveillance cameras.

Ling Xuan came to check it to be certain that everything was in order. Her eyes narrowed slightly at the feeling of unease growing in her chest... she wondered why she smelled trouble coming.

Footsteps approached from behind before stopping at a respectful distance.

"You called for me," Enzo said.

Ling Xuan did not turn to face him. Her gaze lingered on the screen showing the front entrance gate and the back entrance gate, which were reinforced with thick steel alloys and concrete. Guards stood at the gates wearing hazmat suits, their visors fogged by the rain.

The temperature of the rain had risen drastically again after the time Laurel predicted for the cooldown was over.

Ling Xuan felt the security was still insufficient.

"Shut down both entrances, no one is to enter or leave until I say so." She said calmly.
