Chapter 111: Strange Behaviour

Ethan was sent flying backward the instant the spear hit his face. His body slammed hard into the ground and rolled before going limp. Blood sprayed across the cracked street. His left eye was gone, shattered under the brutal blow, red and black staining the side of his face as he lost his consciousness.

"ETHAN!" Samantha screamed.

She rushed forward without thinking, panic overtaking exhaustion. But Ryan was already moving again.

His spear snapped out with precise and merciless speed.

The shaft struck Samantha’s hand. There was a sharp sickening crack. Her fingers bent at the wrong angle as the bones shattered instantly. Pain exploded up her arm and the force sent her flying to the side, her body tumbling several meters before she hit the ground hard and slid to a stop. Her bow clattered uselessly beside her.

Ryan didn’t even look at her again. He turned and started walking with fast purposeful steps that carried him straight toward Victor and Nadine.

His expression was sharp and empty at the same time. There was no hesitation. It was the look of someone who had already decided what needed to be done and was simply carrying it out.

A few meters away, Myles watched in stunned horror.

His body lay limp on the ground and refused to answer him. Pain crushed down on him from every direction and his Ether felt completely hollow, as if something had scooped everything out and left nothing behind.

"What... What the hell is happening?" his mind screamed.

Ryan. Attacking them. Attacking Ethan and Samantha. None of it made sense.

"Why... why did he suddenly become like this?"

He tried to move. Tried to shout. Tried to warn them. But nothing came out.

His throat felt locked. His limbs might as well have belonged to someone else. All he could do was watch as helplessness swallowed him again.

Victor and Nadine reacted instantly.

Victor stepped forward, pulling his cleaver back into his hands and planting his feet despite his exhaustion. Nadine shifted her stance beside him, raising her quarterstaff. Her eyes were sharp and wary.

"Ryan," Victor demanded, fury burning through his fatigue. "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!"

Ryan didn’t answer.

Nadine studied him closely, her gaze searching his face for anything, like confusion, hesitation, or guilt.

There was nothing. No emotion or conflict in his expression. Just cold focus.

A chill crawled up her spine.

"There’s nothing there..." Her grip tightened. "Did he plan this for a long time? But why?"

Victor took another step forward, his voice rising and starting to crack. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?! We won! It’s over! We don’t need to fight anymore!"

Ryan kept advancing. His fingers tightened around the spear shaft, knuckles whitening. The tip lowered slightly and lining up with Victor’s chest as his posture shifted into a killing stance.

He wasn’t listening or hesitating right now. He was ready to strike at any moment.

"Grrgggh..."

A broken groan rose from the ground suddenly. The monster, who still not completely dead, twitched weakly, his severed upper body dragging slightly against the cracked street as black blood seeped beneath it.

Ryan’s eyes shifted to him.

Just for an instant, his gaze left Victor and Nadine and locked onto the monster.

That single movement made everything click.

Victor and Nadine both realized it at the same time.

Ryan wasn’t here for them. His purpose was the monster.

But why—that question remained unanswered, and that felt ominous.

"We can’t talk to him anymore," Nadine said quietly, her voice tight.

Victor didn’t take his eyes off Ryan. "Then what are you suggesting?"

Nadine swallowed. Her grip tightened around the quarterstaff. "We must stop him. Either we defeat him... or we knock him unconscious. Either way, we can’t let him move."

Victor exhaled sharply. "Right." His jaw clenched. "Looks like this isn’t over yet. Goddamnit!"

He felt frustration deep in his chest. Just moments ago, he had thought the nightmare was finally ending. The monster had been cleaved in two. Victory had been right there within reach.

And now this happened out of fucking nowhere!

His MP was dangerously low. His arms felt heavy. His body screamed for rest. He knew Nadine wasn’t in much better shape, and Myles...

Victor spared a brief glance behind him.

Myles was still on the ground, completely spent.

There was no question about it. Myles was out of this fight.

"I can’t drag him into this anymore," Victor thought grimly. "We need to handle it without him."

He turned his focus back to Ryan.

Something felt wrong. Ryan didn’t look tired. Not even a little.

His breathing was steady. His posture was flawless. The spear aimed at his chest didn’t tremble at all.

Then Ryan moved so abruptly.

He hurled the spear forward with terrifying speed.

CLANG!

Victor barely managed to react in time. He swung his cleaver up and deflected the spear, the impact sending a violent jolt through his arms.

Ryan was already moving again.

He closed the distance to them in a blink of an eye, striking with bare hands and fluid footwork, his attacks sharp and relentless. Then he catched his spear again. And attack.

Victor parried and blocked, his legs scraping across the ground as he was forced backward step by step.

Then Nadine entered from the side.

She darted in and swung her quarterstaff low, aiming for Ryan’s legs.

Ryan twisted away at the last second, the staff grazing his side instead of landing cleanly.

He countered immediately, forcing Nadine to retreat two steps as the spear snapped back into his grip.

Now it was two against one.

Victor held the front. Nadine circled from the flank.

Steel and wood cut through the air as the clash began in earnest, sparks flying and Ether flaring weakly with every collision.

Ryan stood at the center of it all, his focused and determined expression didn’t change.

On the side, Myles could only watch in helplessness. He can’t move, but need to. In his heart he felt something dreadful was about to happen.
