Chapter 284: Sea-Green eyes

Butler Aki could feel the tension rising as his master went on high alert.

"Master, what is happening?"

"The mutated animals are here. Tell Jetro to defend the building no matter what. We’ll supply them with explosives along with heavy weapons."

Their goal now was to hold their ground. If they failed, they would be forced to abandon the area—and for Ethan, that was not an option.

They still had no clear information about the surrounding areas, nor any safe place to retreat to. So, leaving now is dangerous.

"I... yes, Master," Butler Aki replied.

He quickly used [Telepathy] to inform everyone of the situation, urging them to stay alert and prepare for combat.

Upon receiving the message, Jetro immediately raised his telescope and focused on Building C.

What he saw made his scalp tingle—the two abbots were fighting a massive mutated animal using strange abilities.

"What the heck?! Isn’t that a rat?" he exclaimed. "That thing is way too big!"

He took a deep breath, then turned to his subordinates with a grave expression.

"Comrades, the rat we’re seeing has clearly evolved into something dangerous. We must defend our position. Get ready and follow me to the 27th floor. I’ll distribute the explosives and pesticides. We’ll try to deploy them while that mutated rat is distracted."

If there was one giant mutated rat, then smaller ones were likely lurking nearby, waiting for their leader’s command.

It was far better to take precautions now than to wait helplessly to be slaughtered.

Hearing his instructions, his subordinates nodded and moved swiftly, coordinating with one another and calling on everyone capable of fighting to prepare and defend the building.

Building A soon turned into a battleground, with everyone rushing back and forth to set up defenses.

Meanwhile, Ethan entered the space once more—to inform the elders about the situation outside and, of course, to check on his little sons.

When he appeared, his third son had already woken up, cradled by Grandpa Caldwell as he carefully fed him formula.

"Little Max is so well-behaved. He didn’t even cry after waking up. Such a good boy," Grandpa Caldwell teased happily, thoroughly enjoying his third great-grandson.

Baby Max simply stared at him with curiosity, his unique sea-green eyes wide, his chubby cheeks puffing out as he eagerly drank his milk.

His eyes were so strikingly beautiful that both Grandpa and Grandma were completely mesmerized.

Without doing anything at all, the baby became a total charmer.

"Eldest Leo has deep blue, ocean-like eyes. Baby Finn has vivid green eyes. This one has a mix of both—turning into sea-green," Grandpa Caldwell remarked.

"Now we can clearly tell them apart. Isn’t it Max?"

As if responding, Baby Max suddenly smiled, instantly melting everyone’s hearts.

"Hahaha! He even smiled at his grandpa," Grandpa Caldwell laughed. "Do you like Grandpa more than your dad? Of course you do—Grandpa is much nicer than Daddy."

Everyone nearby snickered. The old man had clearly gone overboard trying to win Ethan’s sons’ favor.

"In-law, don’t say that," Grandpa Ford countered firmly. "The baby definitely loves his dad more."

Grandpa Caldwell scoffed. "Max, you agree with Grandpa, right?"

Once again, Baby Max smiled reflexively, as if agreeing with his great-grandfather.

"See? Baby Max agrees."

Ethan, who had been listening quietly, finally couldn’t take it anymore.

"Ahem. Grandpa, I’m right here," he said. "What are you whispering to my son?"

Startled, Grandpa Caldwell felt a flicker of guilt—but it vanished the moment he saw Baby Max still smiling.

"Nothing, nothing. Just teasing Little Max," he said, lifting the baby slightly so Ethan could see him better.

"Is it Daddy?" But baby Max didn’t react, too busy drinking his milk.

"Grandpa, let me hold him," Ethan said softly. He wanted to spend as much time with his son as possible.

The coming days would be hectic, and he wanted his children to become familiar with him.

And once things stabilized, he planned to bring them out of the space and place them beside Elena—so they could slowly get used to their mother as well.

Hearing his request, Grandpa Caldwell didn’t hesitate and passed the baby to him.

"You named them Leo, Finn, and Max?"

"Yes. Is there a problem?" Grandpa Caldwell asked, suddenly nervous about the nicknames he had chosen.

"Nothing—it’s quite good," Ethan said as he looked down at his third son.

It seemed like a coincidence that he and Elena had listed those same names. Since they hadn’t known the babies’ genders, they had prepared many names for both boys and girls on a single sheet of paper.

Unbeknownst to him, it wasn’t a coincidence at all.

Little Mia had once taken the paper to practice copying words. And Grandpa Caldwell had seen it, kept the list, and later chose the nicknames directly from those names.

"I already gave them nicknames, just like Elena asked some time ago," Grandpa Caldwell said. "As for their full names, let Elena decide after she wakes up. You’d better listen to your wife when it comes to naming."

"Hmph. I will, Grandpa," Ethan replied casually.

After all, Elena would definitely choose names based on the nicknames his grandpa had already given.

He then focused on his third son, taking in the little chubby face. Just as he’d heard, the baby had sea-green eyes—a perfect blend of his and Elena’s.

The sight filled him with quiet happiness as all three boys were healthy and doing well.

"Eat slowly, baby," Ethan teased softly. "Don’t worry. Daddy will make sure you’re well fed."

Baby Max scrunched his forehead, drawing laughter from everyone.

After a few moments of teasing, Ethan’s expression turned serious as he brought up the situation outside.

"Grandpa, mutated animals have gathered around Building C. I believe we may have to fight later."

The room fell silent.

"What kind of mutated animals?"

"A giant mutated rat. I believe it’s already Tier 1. For now, the abbots are fighting it."

"The abbots?" Grandpa Caldwell scoffed, clearly displeased. "Those fools tried to harm our family, and now they’re stepping up to fight a mutated rat? There’s really something wrong with them."

He raised his brows, waiting for an explanation.

Ethan quickly summarized what had happened—how Brother Elias had helped him by confronting the abbot leader while he retreated, and how the sudden appearance of the mutated rat had forced the two abbots to stop fighting each other and deal with the greater threat.

"Brother Elias?" Grandpa Caldwell nodded thoughtfully. "I like that guy. Maybe we can try to recruit him. After all, we need more people."

"We’ll see," Ethan replied. He wanted to observe Brother Elias a little longer before making a decision.

"Then I’ll help you deal with that mutated pest," Grandpa Caldwell said firmly.

"I’ll join you," Grandpa Ford added at once.

"Alright," Ethan agreed. "Just provide sniper support from our unit window. No need to engage it head-on."

"I’ll stay here and watch the babies," Grandma Ford offered.

"And since you’ll be busy outside, I’ll look after Elena," Mrs. Bennett said. "Sera is still monitoring those undergoing awakening, so I suggested she stay inside." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"Alright. Thank you, everyone," Ethan said sincerely. "If anything happens—especially regarding my wife—notify me immediately. For now, I’ll focus on subduing the Tier 1 mutated rat first, helping the abbots. If the abbots fall, it will put us at a serious disadvantage."

Ethan gave his instructions, having already formed a plan.

Still, he made one thing very clear—if Elena was ever in danger, they were to inform him immediately, no matter the circumstances.

His wife mattered more than anything else.

Everyone nodded and got to work, restocking items in their [Inventory] as they prepared for the coming fight.

Ethan quickly handed Baby Max to Grandma Ford. He had to leave now—to deal with the spiritual items at the military center before heading to Building C.

"Be good," he said softly. "Once everything settles down, Daddy will take you to see Mommy, alright?"

Baby Max smiled again at the word ’Mommy’ and continued drinking his milk.

"Grandpa, I’m heading out," Ethan said. "I need to meet the higher-ups at the military center first."

"Go. Do what you need to do," Grandpa Caldwell replied. "Don’t worry about us."

Moments later, Ethan vanished from the space and reappeared beside Ramon at the military center.

What greeted him was pure chaos—the building was packed with people, crowded to the brink.
