343 That Doesn’t Concern You

Lena almost dropped her phone on the table when it unexpectedly began to vibrate. She’d been far too focused on Richard that the unexpected sensation caught her off-guard.

“That would seem like an important call you might want to think about taking.” Richard nodded his head in the direction of the phone as he continued to eat. He’d likely go back to get seconds before he left. Too bad they didn’t allow takeaway in hospitals. Despite the lack of quality, the food would keep him well through the weekend if he could take it with him. f𝗿𝗲e𝒘e𝚋n૦𝘃𝙚𝑙.com

“Oh? That’s quite the expression you’re wearing right now. Aren’t you going to answer that call?” Richard couldn’t remember the last time that he’d seen such a conflicted expression on someone’s face. It certainly didn’t seem like the kind of expression that crossed the Princess’s face based upon their reaction interactions.

Her brows were furrowed to match the deep frown on her face. The dark cloud covering her expression didn’t appear to be one of anger from what Richard read. No, it seemed troubled. Anxious maybe even. 𝒇r𝙚𝙚𝓌𝙚𝑏𝗻𝑜𝘷𝗲𝘭.c૦𝑚

“Do you want me to take it for you instead? It would be better to answer the call then have someone leave a message you have to deal with latter.” Richard held his phone out as he gave the other. Lena didn’t budge to put the device in his hand.

Tilting his head up just enough, he could read half the name flashing across the ID display. Samuel? Hmm. Come to think of it, he couldn’t remember the last time that he’d seen the other kid around the hospital. Was it that morning? His inquisitive nature started to get the better of him as Lena’s expression darkened with each passing second.

“It doesn’t need to be dealt with right now. I will send him a message to let him know I will call him back later.” Lena chose to wait until the ringing stopped rather than rejecting the call. Only then did she bother with unlocking her phone to send the other a quick message.

Lena didn’t even wait five seconds after she made sure it sent before shutting her phone off. No more calls could come through if she kept the device off. Surely then Samuel would understand she was busy and not try to call her again.

“You think it’s a good idea to go about ignoring that call? I know that I would answering a call from my fiancé ahead of anything else I was dealing with if I actually had one.” Richard led the single life by choice and found it to be a rather fulfilling on most days. Less people he committed himself to, the less complicated his life would be in the future.

.....

“I’ll call him back later. This isn’t something you need to worry yourself about.” The corner of Richard’s lips pulled tight at the other’s words. He placed the silverware done now that he’d finished the food on his tray and shoved the plastic away.

“I think that is where you might be wrong Lena. So many years ago I did promise your father I would help to keep an eye on you and your brother should anything happen. I haven’t only been coming around to check up on the health of an old friend.” It was Lena’s turn to have a shift in her expression. Her eyes narrowed slightly, as her lips drew into a tight line. Her father had never mentioned anything of the sort to her before.

“I already know what you’re thinking. Your father never told you anything because I’ve been trying for years to leave this side of the world. As I’m sitting here with you right now, I’m sure you can surmise that that venture hasn’t been successful. Zane didn’t feel the need to tell you about something that might not happen in the first place.” The Princess’s expression didn’t relax at this explanation.

It made sense why her father wouldn’t mention something that might not happen when she was younger. Now however, she could hardly be considered a child too young to understand such matters. In these situations, having all the information and cards in front of her would help the Princess to make better decisions.

“As friend, my opinion doesn’t change. I don’t know what happened between the two of you but you shouldn’t ignore your fiancé’s call. Talk to him, sort it out and then come back to whatever else there is you need to do.” Lena wouldn’t however, it wasn’t in her nature to do that kind of thing. Her family still came first.

Only after or if they got married would Lena shift to thinking about Samuel in that manner. Jovani could take care of him in the meantime and deal with whatever fallouts occurred. It was the least the Vedova Nera boss could do after all the additional trouble he’d been causing her the last few days.

“I already told you that I will deal with that matter later. I don’t need to be lectured about matters related to relationships right now. There are more important matters we need to be dealing with.” Lena pushed away her hardly touched tray of food. The current mood spoiled what little appetite she had.

“Suit yourself, Princess. I know though that I’m not the only one giving you this advice. A word to the wise, when more than on person tells you something, it’s fair better to listen to the advice to avoid further problems in the future.” With those words, Richard kept his mouth shut. Lena could do whatever she wanted with his advice.

Lena opened her mouth to give a retort in response to the other’s words and scold him for still pushing something she told him to drop once when a hand suddenly gently tapped her on the shoulder.

“Ms. Scarlet, I’m terribly sorry to bother you right now. We tried to contact your phone, but we couldn’t reach you. We thought that you’d want to know however that your brother regained consciousness.”
