Became a Demon with Pregnancy System-Chapter 40: Zoe’s Antidote
Outside the Blue Wolf Valley, chaos reigned as the demon forces clashed.
The military personnel and the Jones family hadn’t paid much attention to Luke initially, but the moment he effortlessly annihilated the Volcanic Poison Wolf and the Flame Demon Wolf in one fell swoop, all eyes turned to him.
"This demon... it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen," Chloe Carter muttered, her voice filled with both awe and uncertainty.
Chloe had just unleashed a thunderstorm spell, wiping out hundreds of slave-level Red Flame Tigers in an instant. She had been proud of her success, but witnessing Luke’s overwhelming power humbled her. The Volcanic Poison Wolf and the Flame Demon Wolf were opponents she wouldn’t stand a chance against individually. Yet Luke had dispatched them as though they were nothing.
Her pride took a further hit when she realized the same man had bested her not long ago—though in human form, and weakened at that.
"Zach," Chloe called out, keeping her tone casual to mask her unease. "What is that demon? I don’t think it’s in any of the records."
Zach hesitated. Luke’s identity was not something he could reveal casually, especially in his current form as the Lone Star Wolf.
"A mutated demon from Nanling," Zach said vaguely. "Incredibly powerful and, frankly, a pain to deal with. Even though we’re allied for now, I wouldn’t recommend provoking him."
"Mutated?" Chloe’s eyes widened, her shock evident.
Every demon had a natural limit—one-eyed wolves could only evolve into three-eyed wolves, for example. For Luke to exhibit such extraordinary power at the commander level suggested he might evolve into something even greater in the future. The idea of a new monarch-level demon arising in Nanling left Chloe uneasy.
"Yes, but don’t worry. For all his faults, he’s not indiscriminately murderous," Zach added quickly, noticing Chloe’s concern. "The real focus should remain on the Female Wolf King. She’s still the key to stabilizing this region."
Chloe nodded and turned her attention back to the battle, deciding not to dwell further on Luke. The Red Flame Tiger clan demanded her immediate attention.
The battlefield remained chaotic. The slave-level Red Flame Tigers had flames flickering on their claws, while the warlord-level Explosive Flame Tigers were engulfed in fire. Unlike the Demon Wolves, these demons possessed elemental enhancements that made them formidable adversaries.
Initially, the allied forces had struggled, but with the addition of human mages, the demon alliance’s numerical advantage was beginning to dwindle. Without adequate high-end combatants, the alliance was slowly but surely being pushed back.
Meanwhile, Luke scanned the battlefield. The Spirit Wind Monkey, while cunning and manipulative, was a poor solo combatant. It was now locked in an intense struggle against the Female Wolf King, who had the upper hand.
Similarly, the Male Wolf King and the bear-like monarch had regained control of their respective battles thanks to assistance from the Jones family and Caden Carter. The tide of the battle had turned, stabilizing in favor of the allied forces.
Satisfied, Luke shot a glance at Zach, signaling him to maintain control of the demon wolves. Then, with a burst of speed, he flew toward the cave where Marissa Jones was being treated.
"The poison has spread throughout her body. I... I can’t save her," Zoe Miller whispered, her voice trembling. Her eyes were glued to Marissa’s limp form, guilt and despair etched on her face.
Marissa, barely breathing, lay pale and lifeless. Zoe felt helpless. She had done everything she could, but her skills as a healer weren’t enough to neutralize the venom coursing through Marissa’s veins.
"Zoe, you’ve done all you can. Don’t blame yourself," Tanya Reed said gently, placing a comforting hand on Zoe’s shoulder. "You’ve kept her alive this long. That means there’s still hope. We just need to wait for Luke."
Zoe nodded weakly, though her eyes brimmed with tears. She redoubled her efforts, the healing light from her hands glowing brighter.
Luke arrived moments later, his sharp eyes immediately locking onto Marissa. "How is she?" he demanded, his voice hard and urgent.
Tanya stepped forward, her tone cautious. "Zoe has done her best. Don’t blame her if... if things don’t look good."
Luke’s gaze softened slightly when he saw that Marissa was still breathing, though her condition was dire. Relief washed over him—it wasn’t too late.
"Zoe," Luke said, kneeling beside her. "Tell me everything you’ve tried and everything you’re thinking. We’ll figure this out."
Zoe sniffled and nodded, her thoughts racing. "The venom from the Volcanic Poison Wolf... it’s potent but oddly controlled. It seems like it was designed to spread slowly, targeting her veins without killing her outright."
Luke frowned. That sounded like the Spirit Wind Monkey’s handiwork. It likely wanted to kill Marissa in front of her family as part of its cruel manipulation.
"But it’s been too long," Zoe continued, her voice cracking. "The venom has spread everywhere except her heart. I’ve been using my magic to protect it, but I’m running out of energy. The only solution I can think of is creating an antidote using the essence blood of the Volcanic Poison Wolf."
Zoe looked down, her voice dropping to a whisper. "But the Volcanic Poison Wolf is already dead."
Luke froze for a moment, realization dawning. The Volcanic Poison Wolf had indeed been killed—but not in a conventional manner.
"Wait," Luke said, his voice sharp and focused. His pupils dilated, glowing with a faint purple hue as a small black mist materialized in front of him.
Luke’s Cursed Pool technique didn’t just kill its targets. It absorbed their essence, including their spirits. The spirit of the Volcanic Poison Wolf was still trapped within the black pool.
With a quick motion, Luke plunged his hand into the mist and extracted a glowing orb—the essence of the Volcanic Poison Wolf. Within it, the wolf’s resentful soul snarled, but Luke ignored it. Without hesitation, he crushed the orb and absorbed its power.
