Chapter 158: Chapter 158: He Has Come

"Sir, something’s happened to your wife."

Justin Kane looked up. "What is it?"

Ben Cheney recounted the details of the worker protest and placed his phone, which was streaming a live broadcast, in front of Justin Kane.

On the livestream, Nina Thorne could be seen walking resolutely toward the rooftop.

Justin Kane’s expression tensed. He immediately stood up and rushed out of the office.

Not daring to delay, Ben Cheney followed right behind him, and they headed straight for the construction site.

Meanwhile, Nina Thorne ascended to the rooftop, accompanied by the police captain and several officers.

Dozens of workers were on the rooftop, each holding a banner, their faces flushed with agitation.

When they saw Nina Thorne arrive, they began shouting insults one after another.

"So you finally decided to show your face? Give us back our hard-earned money! How can you sleep at night holding on to our money?"

"You’re worse than animals! Give us back our hard-earned money! Give us back our hard-earned money!"

The workers chanted in unison, their fury palpable. They looked as if they were about to surge forward and grab Nina Thorne at any moment.

The police captain and his officers formed a protective line in front of Nina Thorne, trying to maintain order.

But the workers were incredibly agitated and showed no signs of backing down.

Left with no other choice, the police captain drew his handgun and fired a warning shot into the air.

BANG! In an instant, there was dead silence.

Everyone on the ground below was stunned. They all stared at the rooftop in shock, with no idea what had just happened up there.

The tactic worked. The workers finally fell silent.

Nina Thorne looked at them and promised, "I know what you’re demanding. You just want to be paid. I will handle this as quickly as possible to resolve the issue, alright?"

The workers, however, didn’t believe her in the slightest. They began making agitated accusations one after another.

"You said that last time, and the time before that! We’ve been trusting you for months! How much longer do we have to wait?!"

"You have to pay us today! If we don’t get our money today, we’re jumping from here right now!"

The crowd erupted, everyone talking over each other, and the scene descended into noisy chaos.

The fear that they might actually get agitated enough to jump was very real.

"Everyone, calm down!"

Seeing how agitated they were, Nina Thorne shouted at the top of her lungs, "I need this project to stay on schedule, which means I need you to keep working."

"I promise that within a few days, I will deal with the bad apple responsible for this, and the wages you’re owed will be paid in full."

"I assume none of you plan on taking today’s payment and then quitting the job, right?"

A foreman eyed her suspiciously. "You’re not lying to us?"

Nina Thorne forced herself to remain calm and nodded firmly. "I promise I’m not. Once this is resolved, your wages will be paid on time, every single month."

"The police and the media are all here. I can give you my word in front of all of them. Please, just trust me one last time."

Nina Thorne’s voice was sincere and carried the weight of her conviction.

The workers’ mood gradually began to settle.

"Are you telling the truth? You’re not going to lie to us again?"

Nina Thorne promised again, "I won’t. I keep my promises."

The workers exchanged glances, on the verge of believing her, and their agitation began to subside.

Just then, an unknown voice shouted from the crowd.

"Don’t believe her! They’ve already lied to us countless times! They’re only coming up with another stalling tactic because the media is watching!"

"If we agree today, they’ll just keep delaying indefinitely! They won’t even let us call the police or get the media involved!"

"No matter what, we have to get paid today! If she doesn’t pay up, we’ll drag her down with us!"

The workers were once again riled up.

Instantly, the workers became wary once more.

"That’s right! If you’re going to pay, pay us today! I don’t care how pretty your words are. If we don’t get our money today, we’re not finished with you!"

The situation spiraled out of control again as the workers’ deafening shouts erupted once more.

「At the same time.」

Justin Kane was fast approaching the construction site.

He kept his eyes glued to the livestream on his phone, monitoring the situation.

"Faster!"

Justin Kane’s hand, resting on his leg, clenched into a fist. As he watched the livestream, his heart leaped into his throat.

Seeing Nina’s slender figure trying to handle all those workers, Justin’s heart felt as if it were being squeezed by barbed wire, the pain nearly suffocating him.

"I said faster! Didn’t you hear me?" Veins bulged on Justin Kane’s neck, his anxiety palpable.

Ben Cheney was at the wheel.

He gripped the steering wheel, his eyes darting across the road as he floored the accelerator.

’Good heavens!’

’I’m already going as fast as I can!’

’We’ve been speeding the whole way, running who knows how many red lights. It’s a miracle we haven’t crashed.’

’If he cares about his wife this much, why can’t he just talk to her properly about things?’

’Good thing we’re almost there. Almost... almost...’

Meanwhile, facing the workers who had once again spiraled out of control, Nina Thorne felt a headache coming on.

She did her best to calm them, but the workers weren’t listening.

Her voice was completely drowned out by the roar of the crowd.

Seeing things were taking a bad turn, the police captain quickly ordered his men to escort her downstairs.

But when the workers saw she was about to leave, they grew frantic.

Suddenly, someone shouted, "Grab her! Don’t let her get away! If she escapes, we’ll never see our money!"

The workers all believed the shout, and they surged toward Nina Thorne.

The police were outnumbered and couldn’t hold them back.

In an instant, Nina Thorne was pulled from the police line and surrounded by the workers, who chanted relentlessly:

"Pay us! Pay us!"

Staring at the furious faces all around her, the deafening shouts and overwhelming pressure made Nina Thorne’s head spin.

No matter what she promised, it was as if the workers couldn’t hear her.

Then someone grabbed her arm and dragged her up onto the edge of the parapet.

"If you don’t pay us today, we’ll all jump from here together and end this once and for all!"

"My wife and kids, my parents, they’re all waiting on this money for food! And you soulless bastards just keep holding it back!"

"We’ll all die here today!"

Looking down from dozens of stories up was enough to make anyone tremble in fear.

Nina Thorne was terrified, but she fought to control her emotions and force herself to stay calm.

She kept trying to soothe them. "I told you, you will get your money! Just calm down. If you jump from here, you’ll lose everything."

They were migrant workers; she could understand why they were acting this way.

Not only was Nina Thorne unafraid, but she also tried to reason with them. "Think about your families—your wives, your children, your parents. I said I will pay you. The police and the media are right here. I’m not lying to you. Please, believe me."

But the workers were consumed by rage. They couldn’t hear a word she was saying anymore, simply demanding that she transfer the money right then and there.

Seeing this, Nina Thorne knew she had no choice but to give in.

She took out her phone to make a call. "Alright, alright, I’ll transfer the money right now. Just let me down from here first. If something happens to me, not only will you not get paid, but you’ll also have to face legal repercussions..."

"The consequences aren’t worth it. My life isn’t worth such a high price from all of you. Please, just get down from here, okay?"

Most of the workers were honest men. Hearing her words, they were about to let her down.

But the same voice from before egged them on again. "Don’t listen to her nonsense! We’re fighting for our rights, trying to get back our own hard-earned money! How is that illegal?"

"Brothers, you all heard her! She’s just trying to stall for time! She has no intention of paying!"

"These rich people don’t give a damn if we live or die! For such a crooked businesswoman, just push her off! Let’s take them down with us!"

Cold sweat trickled down Nina Thorne’s back. ’This person is clearly trying to cause trouble.’

But she had no time to dwell on that; she could only focus on trying to calm the workers.

Just then, Ben Cheney and Justin Kane arrived.

As they got out of the car, the media swarmed them, aiming their cameras at Justin.

"This is a Thorne Group matter. Why is Mr. Kane here?"

"Mr. Kane, did you see the news and rush over?"

"Excuse me, Mr. Kane, the Thorne and Kane Groups have always had a partnership. Will this incident have a major impact on the Kane Group?"

"Will you continue to be partners?"

The reporters flocked around him, shoving microphones in his face.

Justin Kane’s face was grim. His sharp gaze swept over them. "If anything happens to her, you’re all accomplices."

After he spoke, he looked up.

He saw Nina Thorne held captive by the workers, standing on the narrow parapet, looking as if she could fall at any second.

A violent tremor shot through his heart, and he couldn’t help but feel a surge of fear.

Without another word, he sprinted into the building.

The police were still trying to reason with the workers.

As Nina Thorne watched the workers grow increasingly unstable, she struggled to keep her own composure.

She continued her efforts to soothe them. "Listen to me, I’ll transfer the money to you right now, okay?"

"Think about your parents, your children! It doesn’t matter if I die, but what about them?"

"Your children are so young. Are you really willing to abandon them and die just like this?"

Nina Thorne wasn’t just trying to save herself; she was also thinking of the workers’ futures, of their families.

They had worked diligently their entire lives, only to be forced to pay for someone else’s mistake with their own.

It was a terrible price to pay.

At this thought, her conviction hardened. She promised them, "If I don’t keep my word, you can do whatever you want to me—beat me, kill me, I’ll be at your mercy."

The workers were moved by her words and began to lower her from the parapet.

Just then, the man who had been agitating the crowd suddenly rushed forward with a vicious look.

"You should just die! If you die, they’ll have to pay up! Otherwise, they’ll never be afraid!"

Suddenly, Nina Thorne was shoved hard from behind.

Her eyes flew wide with terror as she lost her balance, her entire body tipping over the edge.

In a desperate panic, her hands flailed, managing to grab hold of the man’s leg.

But a murderous look crossed the man’s face. He bent down and pried her fingers off. "Go to hell!"

As she felt her grip being broken, a thought flashed through Nina’s mind.

’Am I... going to die here today?’

Just then, a figure sprinted over, lunging forward with lightning speed to snatch Nina Thorne’s hand.

Nina Thorne’s entire body was left dangling in mid-air, hanging vertically against the side of the building, her hand clutched in a tight grip.

She looked up and saw a familiar, handsome face.

In that instant, it felt as if something had slammed into her heart.

It was him. Justin Kane.

He was here.

"Hold on to me! Don’t let go, Nina! I won’t let anything happen to you," Justin Kane said, gripping her hand with all his might, his face flushed red from the strain.

Nina Thorne’s feet found no purchase, her center of gravity gone.

She stared blankly at Justin Kane’s tense and fearful expression, as if he were terrified of losing her.

A wave of emotion washed over her.

But just then, his grip on her hand slipped, and Nina Thorne screamed.

Her hand began to slide from his grasp. Her body plunged downward, and she was about to fall.
