Chapter 72: Marry Me!

"Abby, why do you look so happy reading your phone?" Sawyer’s voice startled Abigail. She hurriedly put her cell phone in her bag as she approached his car.

"Funny reels..." Abigail replied casually as she got into the car.

Sawyer chuckled inwardly, feeling amused. He couldn’t help but smile as he watched Abigail fastening her seatbelt, which sent his heart racing as he admired her beauty.

"Did you wait long?" he asked calmly, pressing the gas pedal as the vehicle began to move.

"Nope," Abigail replied, placing her bag in the back seat. "I didn’t even finish watching my funny reels before you arrived." She randomly answered Sawyer’s questions, glancing at him before refocusing on the road ahead.

"What do you want to eat?" Sawyer asked, swallowing hard when he saw her tie her hair back. "Let’s find a nice restaurant for a late lunch."

"Are you already starving?" Abigail responded instead of answering his question. She imagined that any restaurant would be packed since it was lunchtime. Besides, she wasn’t familiar with where to eat in this town.

Even though she frequently visited this place, she spent most of her time in the nursery or the hospital.

Rather than searching for a charming restaurant, she preferred to return to his cabin and prepare lunch for them. The fridge had so many ingredients; not using them would be a waste.

"Abby, I already feel full just looking at you. I don’t need any food right now..." Sawyer wanted to say, but he quickly dismissed the thought, knowing she would scold him again.

He silently smiled at his own thoughts. How could he even consider saying something like that to a girl? It felt like his brain had returned to his foolish teenage self.

"You can choose what you want to eat, Abby. I’ll gladly go along with your pick," he finally managed to say.

"Why not go back to the cabin? I could prepare something for us, and we could enjoy our lunch while taking in the stunning scenery," she suggested.

Sawyer had no reason to refuse her idea; he liked it. Without a word, he drove the car out of town and headed toward Starfall Mountain.

"We will arrive in forty minutes, Abby. If you’re hungry, we can stop at the last rest area before hitting the mountain road," Sawyer explained, feeling sorry that she might be hungry.

"Hmm, I’ll let you know," Abigail replied with a smile, her gaze fixed on the street ahead. She had already eaten an apple she picked from her Grandma’s room, so she didn’t feel like eating now.

After a few minutes of silence, as they both drifted into their thoughts, Sawyer finally remembered to ask about her Grandma. He wanted to know whether he would have a chance to meet her if Abigail revisited her.

"How is your grandma?" he asked.

Abigail was absorbed in thinking about the dish she wanted to prepare for lunch and was surprised by his question.

Her eyes lit up as she replied, "Grandma is getting better and is starting to learn how to walk again."

"I hope she gets better soon."

"Thank you. Hopefully, when I visit Grandma again in two weeks, she can walk."

Today, she couldn’t stay long because her grandmother still needed a lot of rest, and their conversation was too heavy; she was worried that her grandmother would be stressed. If her grandmother fully recovers on the next visit, she can spend more time with her.

"Did you tell her about your failed relationship with your ex?" Sawyer glanced at her, curious to see her reaction. When he noticed her smile, he turned his attention back to the road.

"Yeah, I told her. I thought Grandma would be angry at me, but she supported my decisions. So, I feel relieved now that I was honest with her," Abigail explained.

A wide grin appeared at the corners of Sawyer’s lips. There is no reason for Abigail to stop him from meeting her grandmother in the future.

"Why would she be angry at you?" Sawyer replied to her concerns. "Of course, your Grandma will be on your side, Abby. You are her precious granddaughter."

Abigail couldn’t help but smile and agree with his words.

"You’re right, Sawyer. I just worried that she’d be disappointed because she was excited about me getting married this year. But now, that plan has fallen apart..." Her voice trailed off, and she felt her heartache as she struggled to finish her sentence.

Silence enveloped them both as they were lost in their thoughts.

Abigail felt like her heart was on fire. She recalled how Ryland’s betrayal had shattered her entire plan for the year. Though she tried not to think about it, the awful feelings surged back, causing her pain.

Sawyer was also deep in thought. Unlike Abigail, who was feeling despair, he was focused on how to make her grandmother’s wish come true—to marry Abigail within this year.

A spring-like smile emerged on his lips as he turned to her. "Abby, you know what? You can still do that. You still have four months left before the new year comes..."

Abigail suddenly feels frozen, realizing what Sawyer is trying to convey. She turns to the window, hiding her blushing cheeks and hoping Sawyer will stop discussing the matter. But it seems that Abigail cannot avoid it.

"If you accept me, I will fulfill your grandma’s wish."

Abigail takes a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. When their eyes meet, the car comes to a stop. She no longer cares about their location; all she cares about now is making her feelings clear to him.

She can see the light in Sawyer’s eyes shining even brighter. After taking a deep breath, she started to speak, "Sawyer—" but her words paused when he stopped her.

"Abigail Snow, please marry me!"

Abigail is entirely shocked. His earnest voice and expression cause her heart to race again. The "thump, thump" sounds in her heart grow loud and fast while her mind is blurred and even blank.
