Chapter 43: Rumours of a wedding (3)

How did Selene succeed in getting Xavier to marry her?

Gabriel was certain his mother heard the news wrong. Selene was only staying with Xavier at the moment. Nothing about her relationship with that man was real unless she had gotten close to Xavier during the six months her husband was away.

"What if she fills his head with nonsense about us and he comes after us? She’s not going to leave us alone. You must do something," said Lucinda.

Lucinda needed to rethink her plans of embarrassing Selene if she now carried the Blackthorn name. "I told you that woman was a user. She keeps attaching herself to men she could use. That woman never loved you."

"Stop it, mother. There’s no need to get so worked up. If Selene is smart, she would leave us alone. I still have my request to make with the king so I will rise to be a man who is not easy to touch," said Gabriel.

Cassandra wanted to laugh at his delusion but she saved Gabriel from being embarrassed. Everyone knew that unless Gabriel were to somehow become a pureblood, he wasn’t going to rise to be untouchable from Xavier Blackthorn.

Cassandra’s mood turned sour upon knowing it would have been so easy to get Xavier to marry. She couldn’t place what about Selene enticed Xavier.

Was he a man who didn’t think highly of marriage and would still discard Selene later on?

Cassandra shook her head, dismissing that thought. He didn’t seem like the type to marry all for nothing. Xavier wanted something from Selene but what?

Lucinda needed Gabriel to wake up. Selene was going to trouble him. "You think she’s just going to leave you after the way you embarrassed her? You need to make the first move to shame her before she can do it to you. You must think of a way that Lord Blackthorn won’t know it is you."

"I have been hearing that her family were traitors. The Blackthorn name wouldn’t be enough to shield her from that gossip. She will be occupied in dealing with what is said and shouldn’t have time to think of Gabriel," Cassandra suggested.

Lucinda approached Cassandra to kiss her cheek. The way Cassandra snapped at her was long forgotten now. "That is wonderful. It mustn’t be forgotten that her family plotted with others to kill the king. I know how to get the gossip going. Leave it to me."

Lucinda had to leave so she could get started while Selene was busy with her wedding.

Cassandra watched Lucinda hurry away. It was best Lucinda was the one to start up the rumours so she would become a target instead of Gabriel should this fail. Would the world be so kind to her to get rid of Lucinda? Cassandra couldn’t take one more day with the woman.

Cassandra looked to her right at Gabriel but he was already heading back to the yard. She followed him since she needed to know how he felt about all of this. Regardless of the things he said, it was obvious that Gabriel still wanted Selene. His actions have not shown otherwise.

Cassandra stood back when she reached the yard as Gabriel took his anger out on the men he invited to train with. He was lucky they were also mixed-bloods or they would have been dead by now.

It ticked Cassandra off to see him so upset since it meant he would be rough with her when he came to feed. She was tempted to bring another human into the home who could take up some of his time.

"Gabriel!" Cassandra called out to him. "You will hurt your hand if you keep that up. Should I be concerned about how angry you are now? I thought you had moved on."

Gabriel lowered his sword, saving the small soldier before him from getting hit again. "I have moved on."

"It doesn’t seem that way to me and if you are not careful, it will not seem that way to everyone else. You can tell me what you feel. I have always known that she wouldn’t be out of your heart so soon. I am not angry," Cassandra promised.

Gabriel still stood firm on the fact he had moved on. How many times did he need to say it?

Cassandra carefully approached Gabriel. His actions now were unpredictable so even she could get hurt. "You didn’t think she would find herself in the arms of another man so fast. I didn’t think it would come to marriage as well. You loved her."

"I wanted the chance to make her feel how small I felt. Lord Blackthorn doesn’t know what he is getting himself into. She doesn’t love anyone. She likes to use them. I used her a bit but at least I cared for her at one point. She doesn’t know how to open her heart to anyone. She is not like you," Gabriel held Cassandra’s hand.

Gabriel kissed Cassandra’s hand. Seeing her before him, he wasn’t bothered by Selene as others might think. News of Selene getting married didn’t sit well with him but he wasn’t in love with her to go running to have her back.

"I am in love with you. I look forward to when we will get married. She must have rushed to beat us to it. To steal our light but you will still be the prettiest bride the kingdom has seen. I will protect you from Selene if she tries to bother you. She must remember it is me she should set her anger to," said Gabriel.

In Gabriel’s eyes, Cassandra did nothing wrong. He was the one who made advances to her and brought her home whilst knowing he had a wife. He wanted to hurt Selene at first but ended up finding himself a woman he loved.

"Still," Cassandra looked down at the ground, her eyes filling with tears "I learned of your marriage and decided to stay because I loved you. To her, I am the reason your marriage failed. It hurts me to see you be like this over the news concerning her. If you have moved on, please stop. Your servants are watching and this is what she would want."

Gabriel dropped the sword. He didn’t doubt for a second that if Selene knew of this she would laugh at him. "Get rid of the servants you do not like and prepare to have our wedding sooner. I want you to be my wife right now." fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"But your mother-"

"Forget about my mother for a moment. She is too busy worrying about how to get back at Selene. It will slow us down from planning our wedding. Do as you want since it is your time," Gabriel said, determined to have it soon.

Cassandra smiled since all she wanted was to cut Lucinda out of the planning. "Thank you."
