Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 45: First night (2)
Chapter 45: First night (2)
"Milady, what would you do if the lord has changed his mind and wants to do what is to be done on the first night? For you two to make love for the first time. Should I have a disturbance ready?" Agnes asked, willing to jump in if needed to pull Selene out of the room.
Selene laughed as she imagined Agnes barging in. "You won’t need to do that. We both have an understanding that nothing will happen tonight. I trust that he has not changed that plan without speaking to me first."
Agnes gently brushed Selene’s hair until she made it as silky as she possibly could. "You trust Lord Blackthorn a lot. I think of you as a wonderful pair but I always worry for you."
"He has not given me any reason to doubt him. I can’t continue to judge him based on what Gabriel did but I will not miss signs that we will need to leave each other’s side. You don’t have anything to worry about tonight, Agnes. I will just rest," said Selene.
Selene shifted in her seat to face Agnes. "Other than me going to the palace, we have been inside since we came. Tomorrow or the day after, we should visit Elsie’s grave and then go for a ride. A nice break from the estate would do us good."
"I think it is a wonderful idea," Agnes replied. She didn’t want to see Selene cooped up in the estate though it was the safest place for her to be.
Agnes glanced at the door. Selene and Xavier had already eaten their dinner together and opened some of the gifts presented to them. Agnes took her time with preparing Selene for bed so she could leave exactly as Xavier arrived.
Selene noticed Agnes was waiting for Xavier’s arrival. "He said he had something to do before he would come. I will be fine alone until he arrives. You looked a little weak when I saw you earlier so go get some blood. You worked hard with everyone to prepare for the wedding. Thank you."
’It is my job to make sure your vision comes to life. I can have my blood before I go to bed. I will stay here with you," said Agnes.
"I informed Harold to share what was not eaten amongst the servants. Are you confident no one will touch your share?" Selene asked, knowing Agnes couldn’t resist going where free sweets were.
Agnes bit her tongue. "It is kind of you to share with us. Perhaps I should go down now to get them. If you need me, please ring the bell by your bedside and I will be here right away."
Selene nodded her head. "I will."
Selene covered her mouth with her right hand to not laugh at how Agnes walked to the door. She pretended not to notice that Agnes almost tripped.
When the door closed, Selene immediately felt overwhelmed by the large room. Though nothing would happen between her and Xavier tonight, it would be a lie to say she wasn’t nervous. She hoped his playfulness would help to distract her.
Selene stood up from the chair and made her way to the bed. It was late in the night now after the time she spent with Xavier at dinner and looking at the gifts. Sharing a room with him didn’t cross her mind the first time she came to change out of her wedding dress to something more comfortable for dinner. Now it was all she could think of.
Selene sat down on the bed. Would he believe her if she said she didn’t share a room with her husband even once? The arrangement was always to have rooms for themselves.
Selene looked at the clock in the room. She regretted not asking Xavier when he would come to the room. To help time go by faster, Selene got up to search for a book to read in bed.
Slowly, the hours went by yet there wasn’t any sight of Xavier. Selene started to worry there was trouble she was not informed of like his father or relatives coming to voice their displeasure.
Selene set the book to the side and stood up to find something to cover herself with so she could leave the room.
Just as she covered herself with one of Xavier’s shirts, the door opened.
"Well this is a wonderful surprise," Xavier said. He leaned on the door frame as he enjoyed the sight of her with his shirt over his shoulder. "The night dress you wear now is wonderful but I must admit you would look dashing in my shirt. Why are you still awake, Selene?"
"I was waiting for you to arrive. Have you been waiting all this time for me to fall asleep? It is a lost cause to wait for a vampire to fall asleep at night," said Selene.
"That is true but I thought you would force yourself to sleep early so you could escape the awkwardness of the first night. Yet here you stand wide awake with my shirt draped around your shoulders. I suggest you take that off," Xavier said and then closed the door behind him.
Xavier approached Selene, closing the space between them.
"I was thinking of waiting a little longer for you to give in and fall asleep but I couldn’t wait anymore. I had to see what was keeping you awake. Why of all things did you need my shirt? Aren’t your things in here as well?" Xavier said, removing his shirt from her shoulders as he spoke.
"It was the first thing I found there. I was going to get something of mine but I was trying to be quick since I was worried you were taking so long because there was trouble. I can fold it back for you," Selene offered.
"Leave it. It will be taken care of in the morning. Can I know why you were waiting for me? I don’t expect anything of you tonight," said Xavier.
Xavier pushed Selene’s hair over her shoulder but soon placed it back where it was so it would cover more of her thin night dress.
"We are not being intimate tonight but there is an awkwardness that I would face so I wanted to get it over with. I know at some point you will tease me so I want it done on the first night. You didn’t need to wait for me to fall asleep. What is the point of us sharing a room then? I am not scared either," Selene said in case it crossed his mind.
"No, but I can see how nervous you are. Don’t worry. I won’t bite," Xavier said and backed away from her to put back some of the space they had before. The night could go either way if they weren’t careful.
"If you were a human I would believe that you wouldn’t bite me but I don’t believe it now. I wouldn’t put it past you to not bite me even if it would be playfully. I am going to bed," Selene said, making the first move to go to bed. "Stand there if you want."
Xavier was quick to join Selene on the bed but he laid to her right while she made her way to the far left of the bed. "Are you certain you do not want to come closer for me to provide you some warmth?"
"I prefer the cold," Selene answered, sticking to her side of the bed.
