Rukia's affection level had been fluctuating for several days—
Finally, it settled at 80.
[Spiritual Pressure Level: Lv33]
[Zanpakutō Unlock Progress: 29%]
During that time, Shin's personal strength had brought only meager gains—yet again a reminder of how grueling self-training truly was.
Compared to raising spiritual pressure, progress with his Zanpakutō was at least somewhat tangible.
Level 33 spiritual pressure still fell within the range of a Fourth-Class Reiatsu.
With both Rukia and Hinamori's affection levels already in the high range, further increases would be difficult. What Shin really needed now was to meet a new System-bound girl.
And as if answering that very desire—Kotetsu Isane, the 4th Division's Lieutenant, returned for another visit.

Shin welcomed her eagerly.
This time she had come purely of her own volition, and Shin immediately displayed his thirst for knowledge of Kaido (Healing Kido). The two of them delved into another deep discussion.
Shin was active and engaged throughout, which delighted Isane and made her feel that guiding a junior like him was truly worthwhile.
Her affection level rose as hoped—to 50.
As soon as Isane left, Shin wasted no time. He bolted from the Student Council office straight to—
The Kendo Hall.
Shin tossed his Asauchi off to the side and sat down cross-legged at the center of the dojo, his form wrapped in a faint shield of condensed reishi.
As his spiritual pressure climbed, that reishi barrier suddenly expanded outward, spreading across the entire hall in a silent wave.
Once the reishi barrier was fully deployed, Shin's reiatsu began rising again, steadily.
Before him, two blades slowly materialized—one long, one short.
The long blade, named Higan (彼岸 – "The Far Shore"), resembled a traditional katana with black lacquered sheath wrapped in red cords.
The short blade, named Shigan (此岸 – "The Near Shore"), was a compact wakizashi with a pale white scabbard—more refined in design than Higan.
Both hilts bore red spider lily-shaped guards.
[Zanpakutō: Shigan Higan – Full Shikai Unlocked]
[Type: Rule-Based]
Previously, when he could only access a partial shikai, Shin was limited to using Higan's power alone. But with the complete Shikai now awakened, he could finally glimpse the full scope of his Zanpakutō.
He had always concealed its true form—because it was a dual-blade Zanpakutō.
Within Soul Society, only two known Shinigami wielded dual Zanpakutō: Kyōraku Shunsui of Squad 8 with Katen Kyōkotsu, and Ukitake Jūshirō of Squad 13 with Sōgyo no Kotowari.
But in truth, the notion of naturally "paired" Zanpakutō might not even exist in the strictest sense.
Shin's swords were different—entirely different. Each blade embodied distinct and opposing powers.
If it became known that his Zanpakutō was dual-typed, it would attract unwanted attention. Far more than claiming to wield a Kaidō-based blade.
At his current level of strength, such exposure would invite investigation... dissection. And worse.
So long as he wasn't yet strong enough to protect himself, the Kaidō-type disguise spared him too many eyes.
He remained in the Kendo Hall the entire night, immersed in understanding and testing the powers of his awakened Zanpakutō.
Only as the sun rose did Shin begin to slowly withdraw his spiritual power, shrinking the reishi barrier around the hall until it once again clung close to his body.
When he returned to the dorms, he ran into Hisagi Shūhei stepping out.
"Where were you all night?" Shūhei asked, having noticed Shin's absence.
"Training," Shin replied simply, and faceplanted into his bed.
Shūhei raised a brow but said nothing else. He let Shin sleep and left the room.
Shin didn't wake again until afternoon.
The campus was quiet—classes were still in session. The road from dorm to lecture halls lay deserted, and it gave Shin a strange illusion of being alone in the world.
From a short distance away, explosions echoed—likely a Kido practical class. The familiar sounds were oddly comforting.
"You really are something else... Now I get why you're not rushing to graduate."
A voice called out as Shin approached the Student Council office.
It was Shiba Kaien, Vice-Captain of Squad 13, standing in the middle of the path behind him.
"Vice-Captain Shiba?"
Shin blinked in mild surprise. He hadn't sensed him.
If Kaien had come to substitute teach again, he should've been in class right now.
Kaien's voice carried a tinge of envy. "Your days look pretty heavenly, huh? Sleep as late as you like..."
Shin responded righteously: "I'm not that lazy. I pulled an all-nighter handling Student Council business. I just caught up on sleep."
Kaien gave him a look like, sure you did, and came over.
"I actually need a favor."
Shin laughed. "Vice-Captain Shiba, are you sure you're not the one who's too free? You keep showing up at the Academy."
Kaien slung an arm over his shoulder with a grin. "That A-Class First Year group... Hinamori Momo and Kira Izuru. They're part of the Council, right?"
Shin instantly understood—Kaien hadn't come for him, exactly.
"What's Vice-Captain Shiba planning?"
Kaien chuckled. "They're real talent. Squad 13 could use people like that. Think you could... you know..."
He had noticed them during a prior teaching stint, and guessed that once they graduated, other squads would be eyeing them. So better to make a move early.
"They're still First Years, though. Isn't this a bit premature?"
"Five years go by fast," Kaien said sagely.
Shin tapped his chin. "Well, I'm just their Council President. If they have their own opinions, I can't really interfere, can I?"
Kaien immediately squinted at him. "What's that supposed to mean? Trying to extort me? Did you forget how I helped you out before?!"
He still remembered bitterly—he'd planned to introduce Shin to Squad 10 for his uncle, only for Shin to reveal a Kaidō-type Zanpakutō. A total curveball.
Shin answered solemnly, "You misunderstand, Vice-Captain. I'm grateful for everything you've done. Even if you hadn't asked, I'd definitely help you."
Kaien beamed. "That's more like it. Still—one favor deserves another. I'll remember this."
Shin gave Kaien a look that made his smile widen into something toothy.
Kaien flinched slightly. His instincts prickled.
"...What are you scheming now?" he asked, stepping back.
Shin smiled. "I couldn't possibly let a Vice-Captain owe me a favor. Just buy me dinner."
Kaien blinked. "That's it?"
That's suspiciously generous...
Still, he chuckled and waved it off. "Alright, I brought money. You pick the place."
"Let's go to your house."
"...Huh?"
"Your house."
