Chapter 172: Disruption of power

’When did I become his disciple?’ Oliver didn’t know.

The dozen pairs of eyes focused on him, drilling into his body to find an answer. Oliver was also doing something similar, trying to recall if he had agreed to be his disciple at some point.

’Did I?’

He may have danced around the topic, but he never accepted being a disciple.

He was sure of it.

In the current context, a disciple was practically an adopted son. Some high-ranking superhumans, to maintain their family’s strength, would adopt someone from a poorer or less influential family and support them.

In exchange, they were required to support the family in their times of need. In some cases, contracts are even made to enforce this.

This was the most negative way to interpret what a disciple was.

However, there was also a positive interpretation.

A disciple could also mean someone talented who is supported by someone powerful.

A protege of a powerful person.

In Oliver’s case, he never signed a contract of servitude, nor did he agree to be anyone’s protege.

’So, what is his angle?’ Oliver eyed the old man.

The Thunder Emperor displayed a pleasant smile.

Oliver was not at all pleased to see it.

He wanted to throw a tantrum and flip the table to express his protest, but he held it in.

The relationship with that old man was not something he could easily sever. The reason he could leave him home with the peace of mind that nothing bad would happen to his family was because of that old man.

He was the one protecting the Dragon City and his family in his absence.

So, he could only suppress his anger and wait to see what was about to happen.

’Maybe, being the disciple of the old man might not be that bad...’ He said to comfort himself.

Oliver was not someone who liked to be controlled. Anything that disrupts his independence would be eradicated by him. It doesn’t matter if it was Thunder Emperor or anyone else.

Therefore, as long as he was treated well, he wouldn’t cause a problem.

’Thunder Gramps, explain.’ Oliver stared right into Thunder Emperor’s eyes.

"Let me explain it." Thunder Emperor coughed lightly and brought back attention to himself. "Park Sanghyun was sent here to investigate my illegal activities. I will fully cooperate with the investigation. But I can’t allow you to maliciously slander me. I never accepted the shares given to me. So, you have no reason to stop me, right?" He asked Park Sanghyun.

Park Sanghyun looked at Thunder and Oliver. He clenched his jaws and said.

"He is still your disciple. You are misusing your power."

He was stubborn.

Today, he wanted to stop the Thunder Emperor from signing the document. He was unable to swallow the loss and take a step back.

"I suspect you are using the chance to embezzle."

"Okay, you can be suspicious. Anyone would be suspicious in these circumstances. Like the last time the president’s son got the military contract to manufacture ammunition, you can certainly be suspicious of me. But in the end, no charges were filed against him, right? The same would happen again. So, investigate me as much as you want." Thunder Emperor nodded for a second and accepted it.

"You agree!"

"Yes. But..."

"But?" Park Sanghyun frowned.

"But I don’t agree with the cancellation of this contract."

"So, you want to write away hundreds of millions to your dear disciple? Is that it?"

The Thunder Emperor’s opposition made Park Sanghyun happy. If he really went against the centre and signed the documents, he could use the military laws to discipline him.

"No, I don’t plan to sign it." The Thunder Emperor looked at the military officers he called into the conference room. There were a little over a dozen of them standing peacefully to the side. "But they do." He added confidently.

"Each one of them came here representing their superiors. Park Sanghyun, you are looking at the entirety of the Dragon City military now." Thunder Emperor joked and picked up the file before him.

"Instead of me, they will be the ones signing the documents." He added with a smile.

"They..."

Park Sanghyun looked at the bulky military officers with a murderous aura. All of them were high-ranking officers. And all of them looked like they had more than enough combat experience.

They were not easy people to sway.

As someone sent to the base to investigate illegal activities, he really didn’t have the power to stop them if they wished to sign.

However, there was one last trick up his sleeve.

"Are you going to sign?" He asked while glancing over to the direction of the officers.

The officers gave a firm nod simultaneously and said yes.

They respected the Thunder Emperor, but it was not the real reason they were convinced to sign the contract with WorldNet.

During the test of the WorldNet communication system, they and their superiors had personally seen it working flawlessly.

The ability to call home, communicate with bases far away instantly and even request backup fascinated them. This was the kind of technology everyone in the military was waiting for.

And now, some unknown general wants to block the technology from being implemented.

They were angry.

WorldNet was capable of saving many lives. Disregarding all that, the damned general...

Furiously, they looked at Park Sanghyun.

"If you want, you can." Contrary to what they expected, Park Sanghyun gave them the go-ahead.

"But..."

The next word made them frown. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Of course, there was a catch.

"But, you would be included in the investigation for misuse of power and embezzlement. I might not be able to do anything against him or your superiors, but I can still suspend you from work."

Park Sanghyun threatened.

"..." Momentarily, silence descended onto the room.

"Park Sanghyun, are you threatening them? Who is misusing their power now?" Thunder Emperor asked.

"I am informing them about the repercussions."

"Why are you so hell bent on stopping this contract from being signed? Did someone put you up for it?"

"It’s part of the investigation."

The whole conference room could see the true face of the general called Park Sanghyun. They frowned together in disgust.

"Do you want to use the investigation to suppress Dragon City?"

Park Sanghyun wore a smug smile, "What if I want to. You can do nothing about it."

"Then you agree that you have no legitimate reasons to stop us?"

"I need time to investigate. As long as the investigation is in effect, you are not allowed to sign any documents on military expenditure."

"Now, does that include all of them, too?" The Thunder Emperor asked, pointing at the military officers.

Park Sanghyun plastered a wide smile and said, "Yes."

The moment he said that, the Thunder Emperor picked up his phone once again.

"All of you saw that, right?" He asked into the phone.

"We did."

"Yes."

A couple of voices spoke.

"What do you want to do now? The centre is interfering with your power without any reasonable excuse; we can’t let this be. Or else, the Dragon City will be swallowed by those fools."

"We will personally sign the documents. Send them to us." One of them took the lead and said.

"Okay."

The Thunder Emperor put the phone down after the short conversation.

He looked at Park Sanghyun and said, "You see, there is a camera hidden over there. Everything that happened here was live-streamed into the offices of Generals and Lieutenant Generals of Dragon City. They seem to disagree with your sentiment. As you have heard, they are going to personally sign the documents." A small smile formed on the old man’s face. "Park Sanghyun, within an hour after your arrival, you have successfully made the entire military stationed in Dragon City your enemy."

The Federation is made up of fifty-six giant cities. They were independent states, each governing its own region. To share resources and grow stronger in the hope of saving humanity, they joined together to form a nation called the United Federation.

But that doesn’t mean the Federation and the central government could do anything they wanted.

In certain scenarios, the local government has more power than even the centre.

But for the past few years, the centre was tightening its control over the military and slowly gnawing away at the power structure that existed in these cities in the name of balancing power.

Most of them didn’t care about that. After all, it was all for the good of the people.

But, recently, they began to feel the centre overreaching its power to control them. Oftentimes, disregarding their past military achievements.

For example, what was happening to the Thunder Emperor was such a case.

He was a military hero who saved millions of lives. And yet, they were trying to suppress him because he stepped into the limelight.

Did he do anything wrong?

No.

In fact, he produced a new method to identify demons. It was actually a good thing. And just for that, he was being suppressed.

What happened to those old codgers in the Centre?

Everyone in the military hated demons. But for some reason, the centre wants to stop them from eradicating demons. The thought came to them when they looked at the current situation as a whole.

In a way, the Thunder Emperor induced the thought.

But they didn’t care. After all, they were on the right side.

So, without hesitation, all of them agreed to protest against the centre by signing the contract they obviously didn’t want to sign.

Oliver watched all of it play out, a smirk slowly forming on his face.

’This sly old man...’ He said under his breath.

In a few minutes, he seemed to have completely broken the trust the military had in The Centre.

’Great work.’

’Power corrupts absolutely. The more power a single person has, the easier it is for the demons to take over the world. You did great.’

’Did you think about it when you acted out this play?’

Oliver asked in his mind.
