Chapter 6: Another night

Serve? What does she know about serving? Jia Hao thought to himself. His mood shifted as he let out a scowl showcasing his canine, a silent warning.

"Whatever you think you are doing will not fool me, Mira." He growled.

Mira did not sneer at him nor look at him like some repulsive piece of litter. She just. . . . smiled. She had been doing that a lot. It was strange to him. Vastly different.

"Did you hit your head somewhere? You’re acting different."

"Call it a clarity of purpose. I have turned a new leaf." She pointed at the leaves securing her chest from spilling over. Jia Hao glared at her a bit longer before walking forward, back to the path they arrived through. He got the joke but wasn’t laughing.

"Let us get some food." He murmured.

Food. She needed it. She was starving although she wasn’t sure if he meant raw meat or actual eatable food. "What kind?"

"The kind we always eat."

Raw meat.

"Our tribe women put in the effort to secure meals for the week. You have plenty to eat."

Mira wanted to barf. The thought of eating raw meat like these savages upset her stomach. "Can you provide me with fire?" Left her lips before she processed the words.

Jia Hao spun round immediately to face her, his eyes piercing daggers into her. "Fire? You want to burn down the pride like you did before?! I knew it was too good to be true!" He snapped.

[warning: Lion king Jia Hao’s trust has drained back to 0%. He is exhibiting predatory tendencies. Host should keep her distance.]

Mira’s mind raked. "No, I just want to dry the meat. Try out a new method of preparing food."

"Liar!" He barked.

The previous owner of this body had traumatised Jia Hao with fire. Mira was so stupid for bringing it up.

"You are with me every step of the way. If I do anything that will harm you or the pride, Jia Hao, you will be there to take my life. Please, I’m not lying."

Her tone was soft. Her eyes pleading. He took a step back. He did not believe her one bit. "Sure." He worded. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Mira sighed.

"Unlock identification of plants and how to use them."

[Congratulations host! One special skill unlocked]

The knowledge hit her like a wave. She suddenly knew the plants she needed and how to make them to access the rich taste. They were all over the forest but asking Jia Hao to have his people get them seemed no good.

"System purchase items needed to cook delicious steak, down to fire wood. I need to access them once we arrive."

[Items purchased! Current system points balance: 8,850]

Mira gulped. A thought came to mind. "Can I prepare a meal for the entire pride? I noticed no one seems to like me."

"Can you blame them?" Jia Hao’s harsh voice sliced deep into her chest. She shook her head. For the first time, sadness fixed on her face. Being hated was not easy. Trying to get people who were so used to her being evil warm up to her was harder.

"I want to make amends with a good meal. For a start."

"I swear, if you try to kill any one-"

"I will eat it too. First even. If I do something funny, I will suffer it first. Believe me now?"

Jia Hao stared at her skeptically. "What do you need? I will get everything ready."

"A big controlled fire in the heart of the pride land for everyone to catch a glimpse. I will take care of firewood and the spices."

Jia Hao groaned. He took a few steps forward and with the cracking and reshaping of his bones, shifted.

Mira’s eyes glistened at the massive, furry lion before her. He was huge and looked like he could rip her into pieces but something came to her mind. A thought she never expected to think about until now.

How huge are lion penises? Will it fit?

Jia Hao roared. "Get on."

"Your want me to ride you?"

"It’s a faster means of getting to the pride home."

She held unto the fur on his head. He was soft. Her body hopped onto his and she laid on him, resting her torso on his back. Jia Hao could feel her breasts. He growled.

Mira stroked his skin, patting gently. "You’re so strong and cuuuuu-" he bolted, speeding through the forests like hunters were chasing after him to turn him to dinner.

Mira almost fell but something told her he would keep speeding even if she stumbled down so she held on like her life depended on it. It actually did.

The journey back was a fast blur till they reached their destination. Her head whirled as he came to a stop. "Next time, if you want to kill me, tell me first." She gasped. Jia Hao shifted back, pushing her off his back. She fell to the ground in a rough thud.

He walked to a group of beast women to talk while she got her head to stop spinning. Now he came back to her and pulled her up, his grip rough. "Tell them what you need and they will have it done." He said.

Mira tugged her arm away before walking to the group. They all looked ready to attack. They hated her too. She basically had all she needed but meat and fire. "Take me to a large space where we can start a fire. I need sharpened spears to pierce into the meat. And we need a lot of wood to create a stable fire anchor to cook large portions of meat at once. Water would be nice. I need a lot of it."

"And what makes you think WE would trust YOU with spears, fire and water, demon?!" One of the beast women charged. The same one who she met at Jia Hao’s door and threatened.

"Especially with our cubs running around." Another blurted out.

"I-"

"If she tries anything funny, you have my permission to do whatever you want to her. Punish her as you’d like." Jia Hao interrupted.

"So it’s her life over some of ours. Barely a fair trade, king." The same beast woman who started the fight contended. "It is almost as if you want your woman to purposely harm us!"

Jia Hao shifted and charged towards the lioness who drifted away. "You dare contend with me, Patricia?" He roared.

The guard, Patricia, backed away, bowing. "Forgive me, sire. We will get this done." She spared Mira a glance, great loathe in her eyes. This one looked like she will cause a lot of trouble for her.

The beast women departed to get what she requested.

"Thank you for standing up for me, Jia, I-"

"I did not do this for you!" Jia Hao roared, shifting again. "Make one mistake, Mira and forget about a future. You won’t live it."

Mira gulped. "Understood." Her eyes scanned the environment. Everyone was watching, keeping their distance like she was some plague. "Where do I cook?" She asked.

Jia Hao nodded his head forward for her to follow him and she did. Three days. This is the man she is supposed to mate with within three days. Just great.

The fire was being created. Mira had spiced the meat and there were hanging it over the anchor. This took a lot more woman power and effort than she expected but she was almost done, thankfully. All that was needed now was for the pieces of meat to roast. Some were half way through, the aroma was proof.

"That smells nice."

"I guess some good can come out of that demon."

"Good? It was all our sweat. All she did was do nothing and command. Filthy wench!"

"I do wonder what it will taste like, though, it smells so good."

Murmurs clashed in the air. The good thing was, people gathered and were expecting. Including Jia Hao.

"Can I have some?" A voice squeaked from below. Mira looked down at her feet to see a cub. He was so small and cute.

She bent to face him. He was the first person to talk to her pleasantly during this but he sounded fearful. "Where is your mommy, little one?" She asked. The last thing she wanted was someone thinking she was maltreating the baby.

"Pregnant and home. Dad is taking care of her." Oh.

Mira reached for a wooden plate and walked to the fire. The heat was something else, good thing for durable animal skin. She sliced a piece from the cooked part off with a sharpened concrete and put it on the plate. She diced the meat so it cools off. "Here. Chew it slowly, it’s hot." She smiled as she walked to him, now sitting beside him.

The baby looked shy so she took a piece in her hand and blew on it. She took a bite.

Did she really cook this? It tasted way better.

[Thanks to my guidance!]

Mira rolled her eyes and stretched her hand to the cub. He snatched it with his teeth. His eyes brightened and he dragged the whole plate, eating everything.

"More." He yelled. "You cubs, come, the demon’s food tastes so good." He yelled.

Ouch, even the children know me as a demon.

More cubs surrounded her. Way many. This made Jia Hao shift from his spot. He stayed far away from her during the cooking process to have a good view but now that she was surrounded by baby lions, he seemed tense. Focused on her every move.

"Keep your distance, mom says this woman is evil." One of them said. It was a girl, taller than the others.

"My dad said she eats cubs."

"Want more meat?" She chimed, trying to divert their attention to something else. They nodded, eager to taste it. She walked to the anchor and cut more pieces in different plates. She tasted all of them before giving it to the children. They stared at her with fascination before devouring it.

"This demon cooks so good. It tastes so good!"

She giggled. Mira felt a pinch at the back of her head. One of the cubs was stroking her hair. She let him.

Another one joined. Now they were all over her, touching her and eating.

"You smell nice." One said.

"You act nice too." Another chimed.

"And you feel so soft. Softer than fur."

Mira reached for one of them, patting them softly. "So do you." The cub sunk onto her skin, letting her touch him.

"Come over here, little ones! Stay away from the demon woman!" Resounded in her ears. An elder yelled.

"You all should go meet your parents." Mira uttered warmly.

"Thank you for the food!" They chorused before darting away. Only one stayed, the one she was patting, the one who met her first. He was asleep on her body.

Mira stood, holding him against her chest. "Food is ready! Everyone can come eat."

Mira made her way to Jia Hao. "He’s asleep." She whispered. "I don’t know who his parents are."

Jia Hao stared at her then at the cub in disbelief. "A lion baby felt calm enough to fall asleep on you." It seemed like he said it more to himself than her. He took the baby and handed it to one of the beast women. "Take him to his father." He said. The beast woman obeyed. Jia Hao stared at Mira. "Don’t I get to taste what you have prepared?"

Oh, yes. She scrammed to take a plate, one carved differently from the others, and she cut a big portion nicely for him. She walked to him and showed it to him, first taking a bite before pointing it to him.

Jia Hao reached for the one on the plate instead. He put it in his mouth. His ears twitched and pupils dilated. He took more, eating it like it was the tastiest thing he had had all his life. "Do this for me more often, Mira."

"Does it mean you like it?" She asked.

"It’s. . . okay." He lied. It tasted divine. It seemed like his world was open to a flavour he never knew existed. The flesh was so tender yet raw but nicely smoked, so different from the dried meat they had.

"Does that mean I get to stay another night? To prepare this again for you."

"Give me more and we will talk about it."
