Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 38: Used To It
He Juan showed a surprised look and then chuckled when understanding dawned on him.
Of course, as a professional criminal investigator, Mu Yuze would be more capable of discerning micro expressions and subtle gestures. It was no wonder that he could directly draw such a quick conclusion. As for He Juan, he actually had no idea in which part Deng Shi told the lie, but he had ample experiences in working all kinds of temporary jobs. He had met a lot of people from all walks of life and it made him notice the hidden glint of shrewdness in Deng Shi’s eyes.
This person was up to no good. And not only that, if the sparse information he gained from Jia Molei was accurate, then he was afraid that Deng Shi would be involved in Miss Zhao’s disappearance twenty two years ago.
A junior high schooler, kicked out from her house in the middle of the winter night... How helpless and afraid was she at that time? And yet, when she thought that she was safe under the protection of the police uncle, something even worse happened to her again...
The more He Juan thought about it, the heavier his heart was.
He was so deep in thought that he did not notice Mu Yuze coming close until something tickled the side of his neck. Stunned, he glanced down to find Mu Yuze leaning in to take a deep inhale of his neck. His lashes were lowered, shrouding the emotions in his black-blue eyes.
"You’re sweaty," was all he said before he turned away and got into the car, leaving He Juan dumbfounded by the curb.
W–What was that??
Gingerly, he lifted his sweater and sniffed. That’s right, it indeed smelled a little of sweat, but... but He Juan had not thought it would pose a problem for him! After all, he had just done quite a heavy exercise, so it was reasonable to sweat a bit. He Juan glanced at Mu Yuze’s cold side profile and could not help but get nervous. Did Mu Yuze dislike his sweat?
As such, He Juan spent a few minutes outside trying to cool his sweat before entering the car. As a result, the window rolled down to reveal Mu Yuze’s frowning face. "Do you still have another business here?"
He Juan coughed awkwardly, "Um... no."
Mu Yuze raised a brow as if asking, ’Then why are you still dawdling instead of getting into the car?’
He Juan could feel his skin warm up under the omega’s inquiring gaze. He stared down at his feet for a moment before coming to a decision. He Juan gritted his teeth and steeled himself. The most important aspect in a relationship is communication! Indeed, they had not gotten to that phase yet and thus, He Juan did not want these little things to be a stumbling block between them. After all, it was the best to be honest, right?!
"You..." He glanced at Mu Yuze before averting his gaze away. Heavens, he could not look straight into the omega’s eyes. How cowardly he was! "Do you dislike it? My sweat, I mean..." he cleared his throat and continued in a soft murmur, "It’s okay if you don’t. I understand. It’s reasonable that there is a few aspects in me that you will—"
Mu Yuze cut him off. "Juan-gege."
"...Hmm?" He Juan snapped his gaze up attentively, but... was it only his imagination or was there a bit of resignation and helplessness in Mu Yuze’s unfathomable eyes?
Mu Yuze let out a light sigh, "You’re really a stupid Alpha."
"Huh...?"
Where did it come from??
Alas, before he could ask anything about that, Mu Yuze glanced at his watch and a trace of impatience appeared between his brows. "It’s lunchtime. I am hungry." He no longer deigned He Juan a glance and instead leaned back into his seat casually.
"Oh!" He Juan immediately perked up at that. As an Alpha who wanted to court an Omega, it was crucial for him to make sure that his omega would not go hungry in his presence. Otherwise, he would be a sore loser as an Alpha! He Juan quickly rounded the car and slid into the driver seat, the previous topic forgotten just like that.
As the car drove into the main road, He Juan grimaced, "I’m sorry. I should have paid attention to the time. Can you still hold on?"
Mu Yuze snorted lightly. "My work effectiveness has improved thanks to you. And I am only hungry, not starving." Unlike any other bashful omega who let the Alpha lead on their first date, Mu Yuze did not stand on ceremony and pointed the way for He Juan.
And much to his pleasant surprise, it was a family restaurant he often visited too. So their taste in food was similar! Great, this was such a great thing! He Juan had to record it to his notebook as soon as possible lest he forgot, even though there was no way he was going to forget anything about Mu Yuze anyway. He only bemoaned the fact that he had not encountered Mu Yuze before, otherwise he would have started to pursue the omega early on...
He Juan was happy for a few seconds before he recalled what Mu Yuze said about work effectiveness. His heart, which was as light as cotton, suddenly fell with a thud. "If I may be presumptuous to ask..." he paused for a second as he searched for the suitable words. "This kind of thing, does it often happen in your line of work?"
Despite being vague, Mu Yuze understood his meaning immediately. "You mean the discourtesy they showed me earlier?"
"Mn," he agreed in a low voice. He Juan’s grip on the wheel tightened, so did the lines of his lips. It was obvious how upset he was at how those people treated Mu Yuze. ’Discourtesy’ was already a great understatement. The way they looked at Mu Yuze was so disgusting and repulsive as if... as if they wanted to strip his clothes off. An uncomfortable sensation surged in his chest whenever he thought about it.
This was not the first time He Juan had felt something like this. When Jia Molei told him not to get close to Mu Yuze, when he listened to Mu Yuze recounting how three Alphas had knocked on his window when he was in pre-heat, and also now... every single time, this foreign emotion always revolved around Mu Yuze. A few days ago, He Juan might still be oblivious, but not now. He knew what kind of emotion it was.
Anger, possessiveness, the desire to monopolize, to control, to dominate...
It was quite unbelievable how Mu Yuze could awaken the Alpha instinct within him so easily. And furthermore, they had only known each other for two days, for God’s sake!
Just as He Juan was mulling over how to suppress these ugly emotions, he heard Mu Yuze answer in a casual tone, "It’s alright. I have gotten used to it."
Have gotten used to it... It meant that it had happened so many times that he could already react appropriately to such occasions. Right?
Society nowadays might have advocated the status of omegas. However, He Juan was aware that areas with low educational background would still view them as breeding machines. They believed that the nature of omegas were soft and meek, hence they were only suitable to remain at home and be a wallflower. That’s why when they saw omegas having an official job, the first thing they would do was to disparage and vilify them. Perhaps, a few more years would be needed until the prejudice against omegas would disappear entirely.
Not only did this answer fail to extinguish the surging anger in He Juan’s heart, it got even more intense instead. There was an urge within him to go berserk, to keep Mu Yuze close to him by force and shield him from any harm.
But what right did he have to do that? He was only a ’suitor’ and he had not even succeeded in his pursuit yet! Moreover, Mu Yuze was clearly not a weak and harmless omega. He was a fierce and professional police officer!
Omegas must not like it when their Alpha got too possessive. As such, He Juan desperately tried to reign his turbulent emotions. It caused any trace of smiles to vanish from his face. Almost in an instant, the temperature inside the car plunged rapidly and the air became thick with tension.
At a moment like this, nobody would deny that He Juan was an Alpha through and through. No — his aura was even sharper and more oppressive than any ordinary Alphas. It was only because he was always smiling gently that he managed to curb the violent aura.
Mu Yuze almost choked on his breath when he sensed the low pressure in the air. It seemed like... he had given the wrong answer?
