Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 39: Searching For Someone
Fortunately, if there was one thing He Juan could be proud of himself, it was his self-control. After giving himself a severe scolding along the way, his mental state had basically recovered after they arrived at the restaurant.
Because it was Saturday noon, the place was immensely crowded with office workers who came out for lunch, university students, and little families with children. As soon as He Juan and Mu Yuze came in, almost all eyes landed on them, especially the young and hot-blooded university students. The index appearance of these two people was just too high!
"Hey, look at them!"
"Holy shit! Those two big brothers are so handsome! My eyes have been blessed!"
"They are both Alphas, right?!"
As a police officer, Mu Yuze keenly noticed the admiring and bashful gazes which were stuck to them. He glanced at the man beside him and saw that He Juan did not notice anything whatsoever. He was too busy searching for an empty place to sit.
Mu Yuze was left to sulk by himself, even as his outer expressions hardly changed at all. However, he was not given the chance to launch the plan in his mind when a powerful arm suddenly slid around his waist, pulling him closer to a warm chiseled chest smelling faintly of rosewood and whiskey.
Mu Yuze was startled. He whipped his head up and only then did he realize that he almost bumped into a waiter carrying a tray of beverages. He pursed his lips and the earlobes hidden beneath the dark hair reddened ever so slightly.
He Juan’s gentle, concerned voice came above him. "Are you okay? There’s a table over there. Let’s go?"
After receiving Mu Yuze’s brief nod, He Juan started to lead him through the busy tables. He was worried that Mu Yuze would bump into someone again, and hence, his demeanor was especially attentive and protective.
"!!!"
"Oh my God! They’re a couple!!!"
"Gosh, this is better. Handsome guys should just stick to handsome guys!"
"Ah, my three-second crush is broken!"
Of course, He Juan did not notice the heated whispers behind their back. It was not until they arrived at the table that he noticed how brazen his arm was to curl around Mu Yuze’s body like that! How could he—?! Coughing, He Juan let go with a move as natural as possible, pulled a seat and gestured for Mu Yuze with a smile. "Come here."
Mu Yuze’s expression betrayed nothing as he sat down and allowed He Juan to push the chair for him.
He Juan took a seat opposite him and smoothly ordered a lightweight and healthy dish to the waiter. Then, he rewarded himself with extra sweet syrup in his chocolate. After that, he listened attentively to the dishes Mu Yuze pointed at, making it a special point to learn how to cook it in the future. Mu Yuze had said himself that he disliked sweets and jewelry. Who knew, perhaps this sincere act of his would increase a few brownie points?
He Juan could not help smiling when he imagined the bright future ahead, earning him a strange look from Mu Yuze.
"...Why are you looking at me like that?"
"No." He Juan’s eyes crinkled into crescents from how wide he was smiling. "It’s just that you look especially handsome today."
He was not lying. They were sitting by the window that overlooked the green lawn of the restaurant. The sunlight hit Mu Yuze’s profile just right, submerging his features in light and shadow. It made his eyes look even darker and more lustrous than usual.
He had expected Mu Yuze to blush or directly change the topic. After all, this person’s skin was unexpectedly thin. However, Mu Yuze only stared at him with an incomprehensible look. How to describe it? There was a hint of a smile in them, yet there was also scrutiny as if he wanted to cut He Juan’s head open and see what was inside his head. Mu Yuze’s eyes were already penetrating to begin with and now that he was looking at He Juan with such a gaze, it was like he could straightly see through his soul.
With all honesty, He Juan admitted that he was really weak toward Mu Yuze’s beautiful eyes. He could only wave the white flag and admitted defeat. Averting his gaze, he cleared his throat and asked, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Mu Yuze shook his head. Then out of nowhere, he asked, "Why did you decide to be a teacher?"
Even though He Juan was surprised by that abrupt change of topic, he still pondered on it seriously. "There is no special reason. My temperament can be considered very mild and I also like to teach others. With my condition, it is recommended that I get into constant touch with numbers so I can improve my memory. That’s why I decided to be a math teacher. Why?" He scratched his cheek and tilted his head to the side. "Do you think it doesn’t suit me?"
"No." Mu Yuze’s answer came almost in a heartbeat, so quick that one could not doubt the sincerity behind it. He said in a very serious tone, "You are a very good teacher, I am certain of it."
Goodness, what kind of straight attack was this? This was so... unfair! How was he supposed to keep his calm this way?! In order not to let Mu Yuze know how flustered he was, He Juan blurted out the first question that crossed his mind, "How about you? Why did you become a policeman?"
It was only when the sentence came out of his mouth that he realized that he really wanted to know the answer. Forgoing the previous fluster, he folded his arms above the table and leaned forward with pure curiosity, "It must be quite a demanding job. Ah— I don’t think that you’re not suitable for it. On the contrary, you make a very good officer!" He Juan hastily added lest Mu Yuze got a wrong impression. After a second, he could not help but add again, "...Of course, you don’t need to answer this question if you don’t want to."
As it turned out, he had thought too much about it.
Mu Yuze opened his mouth to reply, however at that exact moment, the waiter came to deliver their drinks. They each took a sip — He Juan with his dear hot chocolate and Mu Yuze with black coffee — and after that, Mu Yuze gave him an answer, "It’s not a problem. I was searching for someone."
That answer was so unexpected that it took He Juan a few seconds to react. "You became a police officer to search for someone? That’s so... amazing." He praised from the bottom of his heart.
He really wanted to ask who that person was, yet for some inexplicable reason, he held himself back in the nick of time. He could sense that... he might be intruding on some private matters if he proceeded. Their budding relationship had not developed to the point where he could ask something like that, right?
But then, Mu Yuze suddenly asked, "You’re not going to ask who?"
"Ah?" He Juan was stunned. "Can I?"
Mu Yuze gave a casual shrug. "I don’t mind telling you." He raised his dark eyes to stare at He Juan and uttered slowly, "He can be considered as my life benefactor, my teacher, the one I owe a life debt for and also... my first love."
