Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 41: Why Are You Here?

I really like this job, the notion suddenly popped up in He Juan’s mind as he returned the students’ greeting after class.

He knew that few people like mathematics but to see students racking their brains with a crumpled face trying to solve the problem, then immediately breaking into huge smiles when they finally succeeded, gave him immense satisfaction. Especially when they did it through his guidance. He really felt like he had helped someone this way.

"S–See you, Teacher!" A girl in a ponytail braced herself to call out after being teased by her friends.

"See you," He Juan raised his head and showed a gentle smile. "Girls should be more careful when going home. It’s getting late. Try not to be alone, okay?"

"O–Okay!!" The girls squealed before running away from the classroom, leaving a faint cloud of dust behind their trail. A faint shriek from the hallway drifted to his ear, "Aaaah, what should I do, he’s so handsome!!!"

He Juan only shook his head at their shenanigans, amused. Gathering the teaching materials in his arms, he was ready to leave but was surprised when he found that there was still a student lingering near the door. It was a thin, slender youth with delicate features.

He Juan dug into his bad memory and finally managed to call out, "Wu Yuan, not going home yet?"

Wu Yuan shot him a hesitant glance. He looked like he wanted to say something but in the end, decided himself against it. Before He Juan could say anything, the youth had already turned away and rushed down the hallway with large steps whilst clutching onto the strap of his bag tightly. From a distance, his back looked especially tense and small, almost like a little frightened hamster.

He Juan furrowed his brows. Did something happen? As a teacher, He Juan strived to care about his students, not only academically but also mentally. He had said it in the beginning of the class, if the students were troubled with something — anything — then don’t hesitate to find him and he’d see if he could do something. Perhaps, that’s why Wu Yuan was waiting until the class was empty to talk to him. However, he still chickened out in the end...

A faint unease weaved its way into He Juan’s heart but just as he was deciding whether he should give chase or not, the Principal coincidentally passed by the classroom and caught sight of him.

A kind smile instantly appeared on the face of the fifty-years old Beta. "Teacher He." She nodded in return to the passing students’ greeting before continuing, "How is it? Have you gotten used to the job?

He Juan bowed his head politely, "Good evening, Principal Wei. Thank you for asking. So far, I have adjusted myself quite well. This school is very good and the students are amazing. They’re all good children who take very good care of me."

Principal Wei laughed until her eyes turned crescents. "Of course, it’s because Teacher He is so handsome."

He Juan immediately realized that Principal Wei must have heard the female students’ squealing. His neck warmed up in embarrassment. Principal Wei had directly hired him even when he did not come from any education background nor did he have any professional experience. For that, He Juan was very grateful. He did not want the Principal to misunderstand him and hence he hurried to explain. "That was—"

"Oh, don’t mind me. I was just joking with you." Principal Wei cut him off with a faintly teasing manner. "An Alpha teacher like you is very rare. Of course, students will think that it’s very marvelous."

"Principal Wei..." He Juan scratched his cheek awkwardly. "I deeply apologize for being absent yesterday. You hired me to fill in the pregnant teacher’s classes, but I still irresponsibly—"

"Teacher He, I understand. You have explained to me through the phone." Principal Wei really liked this gentle, courteous and mild-tempered teacher. Her vision had always been good. As soon as she saw He Juan coming through the door, she knew that she had to hire him. Looking at the apologetic Alpha in front of him, she became more certain of her decision. "How about this? Coincidentally, I am still lacking one teacher to accompany our students for a provincial competition across the city tomorrow. It will only be a few hours in the morning. Are you up for it?"

"Sure, I’d be glad to," He Juan agreed in a heartbeat. He was already dying of guilt because of the kindness Principal Wei showed him and would definitely think of something to repay her! Anyway, it’s not like he had plans on Sunday.

Delighted, Principal Wei took out her phone and sent the itinerary to him. She also conveniently invited him into the group chat of the competing students. He Juan looked at the lively welcoming stickers everyone in the group sent him and could not help laughing.

"Don’t worry, Principal Wei. I will definitely watch over them tomorrow, " He Juan promised with all earnesty. They were all top students! The pride and joy of the school! This time, He Juan felt the heavy responsibility on his shoulders to do his job well.

Both of them exchanged a few pleasantries before He Juan excused himself. He returned to the teacher’s office, chatted with his fellow teachers whilst marking the paper quiz and exchanged a lot of numbers along the way.

Thursday – that was two days ago – was his first day of working, but unfortunately his headache suddenly relapsed and he was in a hurry to get home, missing the chance to socialize with his colleagues. He Juan looked at the increasing names in his phone contacts and smiled happily.

Perhaps it was because he could not remember anything from the past, he subconsciously sought more connection with people. It was as if he was trying to prove that someone named He Juan indeed existed in this world and was not an entity who suddenly popped out of nowhere. The more people who knew him, the more anchored He Juan felt. Otherwise he would feel that... one day, he would be forgotten by the world.

Without him realizing, the sky gradually darkened into dusk. It was already 6.30 pm when he walked out of the school.

As he took his time to reply to the students’ inquiry in the group chat, suddenly a loud honk sounded not far from him. He Juan lifted his head in reflex, and his eyes widened in surprise when he saw the familiar car parked outside the gate in the same position as a few hours earlier. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

That was—!

He Juan sucked in a breath and felt dizzy from the surge of happiness that rushed to his head. His feet moved without him realizing toward the car as if there was a heavy gravity that drew him closer. Once he got near, the window rolled down to show Mu Yuze’s breathtaking features that would not fail to take his fatigue away.

Indeed, he looks the most beautiful under the sunset, the thought slipped into He Juan’s mind, unbidden.

Too caught off guard by this sudden surprise, He Juan could only foolishly ask, "Xiao Ze, you... why are you here?"
