Chapter 40: First Love

If He Juan had been drinking, he would have spurted out his chocolate upon hearing this. But fortunately he was not, so he could spare himself and Mu Yuze from the potential humiliation.

However... what should he say about this? Mu Yuze’s first love? Was it okay to... discuss something like this on a first date? As much as He Juan was elated that Mu Yuze trusted him enough to divulge a matter so personal, he could not help the tinge of sourness that spread over his chest. It was like he had just bitten into a lemon.

Ah, it is the Alpha-thing and their possessiveness again, He Juan thought bitterly.

He cleared his throat and carefully observed Mu Yuze’s expression, trying to see if he could discern anything from that. However, if He Juan had been proficient in this part, then he would not have given such a huge headache to Jia Molei and Su Xieren for the past seven years. As such, he could not understand what Mu Yuze was trying to tell him despite scrutinizing for a long time.

He could only awkwardly comment, "They[1] sound like an amazing person..."

Mu Yuze did not hesitate to agree. "Indeed."

He Juan: "..."

Why did he have a feeling that he had picked up a rock only to smash it on his own feet? Now he had to suffer through the consequences and obediently ate this jar of vinegar!

He Juan wanted to finish the topic right here and now. But he felt like the atmosphere would be too awkward if he did so. Hence, he could only brace himself to continue asking, "Then... is there any development in your search?"

Goodness, he got goosebumps when he heard this question himself. What if Mu Yuze said that yes, he was going to find this person soon? Then wouldn’t He Juan lose him even before he started courting the Omega?!

"Development..." Dark shadow shrouded Mu Yuze’s beautiful features. He lowered his lashes, preventing anyone to see the emotions swirling in his eyes. Then without any warning, he started to ramble to He Juan as though he had long been waiting to do so — or to be exact, it must be because He Juan was the only one sitting opposite him right now. "When the accident happened, everyone around me was convinced that he was dead. Only I was stubborn and insisted that he wasn’t. Recently... when I thought that things were going to get better, I received one bad news after another..."

Wow... this was simply the longest sentence Mu Yuze had ever said to him per date. And to think that it was because of the so-called ’first love’... It could be discerned in one glance how important they were to him.

He Juan let out a faint sigh. Yes, he was faintly displeased with this person’s existence, but he could not help but feel heartache for Mu Yuze too. It must be so painful for him to lose such an important person. He Juan could not put himself in Mu Yuze’s shoes due to his memory loss, he had no idea how it felt to lose someone only to seek them out in desperation, but it was precisely because of that reason that it distressed him more.

He sincerely conveyed, "I hope you will find them as soon as possible."

Mu Yuze blinked slowly, then nodded.

Their food soon arrived and He Juan tried to divert the topic in order to dispel the gloomy atmosphere.

After they finished their lunch and got back to the car, Mu Yuze had more or less gotten rid of the shadow clinging to his features. He Juan discreetly heaved a sigh of relief when he saw that.

The hour hand of the clock slowly traveled to one. He Juan’s math class was going to start soon. Fortunately, the traffic was not bad this time and so, they arrived in front of Geming High School fifteen minutes before one.

He Juan alighted from the car, carrying the teaching materials in his hand. And the driver’s position automatically switched to Mu Yuze.

"Feel free to use the car," He Juan said as he patted the car hood. He bent his waist slightly to smile at Mu Yuze through the window. "Or, just treat it as yours until your car is washed. I don’t mind. The school is close to where I am staying right now so I can just walk there."

Mu Yuze stared at him for one long moment, enough to make him think that he had said something wrong, before he slowly said, "About what we discussed in the car before... no need to get angry."

He Juan blinked twice. What they discussed in the car before? To ask someone with a bad memory such a question was practically the same as asking them to find a needle in a haystack. For a second, his mind buzzed and he could not recall anything at the top of his head. What had they discussed in the car before?

However, He Juan very rarely got angry and there was only one instance when he had almost lost control of his emotions in the car today. He put two and two together and finally discovered that Mu Yuze was talking about the matter of people being rude toward him simply because he was an Omega. He thought he had restrained himself well. As it turned out, Mu Yuze still noticed his lapse of control?

He Juan’s eyes sank lightly, but he still put on a helpless chuckle on his face and reached out a hand to pat Mu Yuze’s head. "What are you saying? How can Gege not get angry when something like that happens to you?" He marveled at the softness of Mu Yuze’s hair whilst sighing. His voice softened considerably as though he was coaxing a little wild rabbit. "There is no need for you to endure it quietly just because you’re an Omega. Nothing is wrong with being one. Next time... tell me if it happens again, okay?"

Mu Yuze’s head was swaying back and forth due to He Juan’s rubbing. However, he did not show any annoyance and instead, quietly let himself be patted with an expressionless look. How could he be so adorable?! He Juan’s heart squeezed painfully in his chest.

"That’s it." He Juan hastily withdrew his hand lest he did something stupid again, like pinching Mu Yuze’s red earlobes or stroking his gland. Unacceptable! That was sexual harassment! He cleared his throat and pointed behind him. "I’m going."

He allowed himself one last look before decisively turning around. Alas, he had not taken more than two steps when a quiet voice called out,

"Juan-gege."

"Hmm?" He Juan turned around so fast that he nearly made himself dizzy. "Do you need anything else?"

"...No." There was something complicated flashing in Mu Yuze’s dark eyes, but at that time, He Juan was incapable of deciphering what it meant. Before he could take a closer look, Mu Yuze had covered it swiftly and assumed a casual tone. "There’s nothing. What time do you get off work?"

He Juan did not think too much and answered honestly, "I need to grade some papers for the quiz today so... it should be six pm?"

Mu Yuze nodded. "Alright."

Before He Juan could ask why he asked something like that, Mu Yuze had rolled up the window and drove the car away. Scratching his cheek, He Juan could only give a shrug and put the matter to the back of his mind. He stepped into the school yard and greeted the security guard amicably.

Taking out his phone, He Juan deftly sent a message to his ever reliable doctor and best friend, Jia Molei.

[A–Lei, I have a favor to ask. Can you make an exception and tell me a little about the victim of the sexual assault five months ago?]

He had made up his mind. No matter how much nagging he would receive from the other party later, there was no way he could let the problem be buried so easily just like this. Because for some inexplicable reason, he had a hunch that... it would be their breakthrough for Miss Zhao’s case.
