Chapter 48: Nowhere To Go

Su Xieren had initially bought the apartment in order to live with his girlfriend, the deceased Zhao Xinya. The building was located in the middle of the bustling city. It even had a park, children’s playground, gym and swimming pool! Of course, the price was exorbitant as well. It was apparent that Su Xieren had sacrificed a big hole in his savings in order to prepare for the future.

He Juan still recalled how he and Jia Molei had teased the Beta until he became a blushing mess. Despite their close relationship, Su Xieren was fairly protective of his girlfriend’s identity and hence, when he suddenly came out with this great news and told them seriously that he intended to settle down with her, He Juan and Jia Molei were ecstatic. They had even thrown a small party to congratulate him.

Now that He Juan thought back to those beautiful memories, he only felt sadness and intense worry.

"He’s still not picking up?" Mu Yuze asked beside him.

He Juan nodded anxiously. He stared at the ascending number of the elevator, wishing that he could fly directly to Su Xieren’s side. He had been trying to call Su Xieren to no avail. He Juan had no idea what the Beta was up to right now for him to turn off his phone. The image of Su Xieren’s despondent silhouette back in the hospital kept surfacing in He Juan’s mind and his left eye twitched intermittently.

"He won’t do anything stupid, will he?" He Juan muttered quietly, more to himself than the man beside him.

"Based on my observation, he doesn’t look like a reckless person." Mu Yuze said dryly. For such a cold person, this ought to be the best consolation he could offer.

He Juan also realized it and he gave Mu Yuze a small grateful smile. Without Mu Yuze by his side, He Juan might have lost himself in more fluster and panic.

As soon as the elevator stopped on Su Xieren’s floor, He Juan immediately slipped out without even waiting for the door to open fully. He walked — almost jogged — through the rows of closed doors with his heart thumping irregularly in his chest. He tried hard to keep his head blank instead of wandering further down the line of ’what ifs’.

Please... please be okay, Xieren...

Arriving at Su Xieren’s door, He Juan immediately halted in his tracks. He actually knew the passcode, yet for some inexplicable reason, he could not bring himself to barge in just like that. He felt that... he would only intrude on a private place specially of Su Xieren and Miss Zhao.

Thus, he reached out to press on the door bell. Once, twice, thrice... there was no response from within.

He Juan’s brows furrowed deeply. "Is he not in? But if he’s not home, then where has he gone?"

Just as He Juan was steeling himself to enter the passcode, Mu Yuze tugged on his arm. "Juan-gege," he pointed somewhere beneath his feet. "There is something there."

He Juan followed his line of sight to find a familiar note stuck on the crack under the door. If one did not carefully look around, it was very easy to miss it. He Juan’s heart skipped a beat. This... This was the exact same note Su Xieren used this morning to inform him about his appointment in the hospital!

He Juan instantly crouched down and carefully pulled it out.

Su Xieren’s graceful and neat handwriting unfolded in front of his eyes.

[Da-ge, don’t worry. I won’t do anything stupid.]

The first line directly addressed what He Juan was most concerned about. He heaved out a sigh of relief as the knot in his heart loosened. Su Xieren really knew him too well.

[I have a few matters to take care of. Don’t worry about me. I have left your medicine in the bathroom cabinet, feel free to take it if you need, but don’t forget to record the consumption each time. I will check it after I return.

Also... I’m sorry about earlier. I will contact you again soon.

– Su]

"Xieren..." He Juan closed his eyes and gripped the note tightly in his hand. His nose suddenly turned sour as he choked the words out with a voice as soft as a whisper, "Idiot... there’s nothing to be sorry about."

Even in such a situation, he could still worry about He Juan. Su Xieren was really the kindest and most gentle person he had ever known. If only... If only Zhao Xinya was still alive...

He Juan forcibly stopped himself from going down that line of thought. There was no use crying over spoilt milk. The most important matter now was to find the person who was responsible for Miss Zhao’s death and make sure that they received the punishment they deserved. A cold glint flashed through He Juan’s eyes. However, when he turned to face Mu Yuze again, it vanished without a trace and only the usual gentleness remained.

"You’re right. Xieren is indeed too smart to do anything reckless." He laughed wryly. "It’s me who is too much of a worrywart."

Mu Yuze nodded. He did not ask what Su Xieren had written nor did he try to look. Instead, he gestured at the elevator with his chin. "Let’s go."

He Juan blinked, his smile frozen in his face. "Huh...?" Go? Go where?

"Let’s go back to my place." Mu Yuze dropped a bomb out of nowhere. What was worse was that he said it with a completely straightforward expression as if he did not feel anything wrong with that! Mu Yuze started to walk away, but upon realizing that He Juan had not followed him, he turned back with a small frown. "Juan-gege?"

"X–Xiao Ze..." He Juan stumbled over his words as he pointed at his own nose. It couldn’t be... had all those lessons of self-preservation he had given the other party was for naught? He put on an incredulous look, asking, "Me? You’re inviting me... to your place?"

Mu Yuze showed a confused look as if he could not figure out why He Juan was hesitating. "You have nowhere to go, don’t you?"

He Juan could actually say that he knew the password to Su Xieren’s apartment. Moreover, he had also stayed over yesterday so it was only natural for him to return here. Or if he had no other choice, he could also crash into Jia Molei’s house for a while. It was the house he had lived in for years before he moved out, after all. He was certain that with Su Xieren’s disappearance, Jia Molei would be too busy worrying his head off instead of nagging him.

Alas, when he heard the words ’nowhere to go’ coming out of Mu Yuze’s lips, He Juan felt a familiar suffocation and loss wrenching his heart tight, it was so painful that he could not breathe for a while. It was the same feeling he had every time he awoke from the nightmare — whenever he dreamed about those broken pieces of memory he could no longer remember.

Before he knew it, he squeezed a smile into his face and nodded, "En, you’re right..."

He walked toward Mu Yuze and quietly took his hand, squeezing the cold and slender fingers in his warm palm. Then, he carefully slipped his fingers in between the cracks of Mu Yuze’s, interlacing them together. Giving it another little squeeze, he said softly, "Let’s go."

Mu Yuze stared at their locked fingers in a daze. He let himself be pulled along by He Juan into the elevator, his dark eyes flashing in an indecipherable light as they landed on He Juan’s broad back.

It was not until He Juan got into the car did he recall something very, very important. In an instant, he let out a quiet gasp. Oh God, going to Mu Yuze’s house... wouldn’t he have to meet the omega’s parents?! Had their relationship progressed so fast that he could meet his in-laws already?!
