Chapter 49: If Only...

The more He Juan thought about it, the more flustered he was. Was it really okay to go just like this? Stiffly, he reached into his pocket, took out his notebook and flipped through it from the beginning.

Had he written something about how to impress someone? What kind of people were Mu Yuze’s parents? They must be amazing, seeing how commendable their son turned out to be. Would they mind He Juan’s age and feel like he was too old for their precious omega? Argh, there was nothing useful written here!

He Juan, who had relied on his notebook for the past seven years, lamented on how useless it was for the first time ever.

Left with no other choice, he could only turn to Mu Yuze and ask tentatively, "Should I... buy something?"

Mu Yuze did not understand. "Buy what?"

"I don’t know..." He Juan held his forehead and revealed a helpless smile. "It’s my first time coming to your house. Shouldn’t I buy some fruits to show my respect? I’m sorry, it’s my first time doing something like this so I am really clueless here..."

Shock flashed through Mu Yuze’s features and he tightened his grip on the wheel. It was only for a split second, so fast that when He Juan raised his head again, Mu Yuze’s expression had returned to its usual coldness. "There’s no need." Chill seeped into his tone. "I live alone."

He Juan was taken aback. "You live alone? Then, your parents—"

"I don’t have any parents."

He Juan keenly noticed that Mu Yuze said ’don’t have parents’ rather than ’they’re gone’ or ’they have passed away’. He could not help but fall into a momentary silence. It seemed like... he had accidentally stepped into a landmine. Mu Yuze was radiating such a cold aura that He Juan could not bring himself to ask anything even if he wanted to. He bit his tongue and swallowed the words back into his stomach. Instead, he reached out to ruffle Mu Yuze’s hair. "You’re such a good boy..."

He had no idea what kind of life Mu Yuze had been living, but for him to turn out into an upright, honest and wonderful person like this, it must have not been easy. A sudden possibility popped into He Juan’s mind. Could this possibly be attributed to Mu Yuze’s so-called life benefactor, teacher, and first love?

Then... it was no wonder that Mu Yuze would attach such an importance to that person, even to the extent of becoming a police officer just to search for them. It turned out their past was really not simple.

What to do? He Juan quietly heaved out a sigh. He really envied this person he had never seen before...

Why had he only met Mu Yuze now? If only... If only He Juan had met him before this so-called benefactor, he was sure that he would be able to do anything for Mu Yuze... even more than his first love...

Mu Yuze shot him a speechless look. "...What’s that for?"

He Juan suppressed the sourness in his chest and chuckled softly. "Nothing. I just want to praise you. Can’t I?"

Mu Yuze harrumphed, the tip of his ears reddening slightly.

Their car drove away from the resplendent city, leaving the bright and towering skyscrapers behind and headed toward the more traditional areas. Instead of packed apartments and high buildings, the houses here were at most two-stories with beautiful lawns in front. The road was devoid of cars and only one or two passersby could be seen.

People here seemed to especially like gardening because He Juan could see a huge variety of breathtaking flowers on the lawns; hydrangea, hibiscus, orchids, begonia...

The sun had fully settled into the horizon by then, and neat rows of street lamps lit up to illuminate the road in front of them. Warm light poured out of the small houses and the flowers swayed gently along with the breeze, making the atmosphere so tranquil as if one straight out of a fantasy land.

He Juan had never traveled to this part of the city before and hence, he stared out of the window all the time, marveling how exquisite Mu Yuze’s taste was.

They stopped in front of a two-story house with dark blue and white paint. The grass on the lawn in front was neatly trimmed, and there were pots of lust lavender trees lined up along the wall.

He Juan alighted from the car and took a deep breath, taking in the fresh air devoid of pollution and the refreshing fragrance so similar to Mu Yuze’s pheromones. He had not even stepped into the house, but he liked it very much already.

"You have a very beautiful house," He Juan complimented sincerely. It was a thousand times better than his messy apartment.

"It’s not chosen by me," Mu Yuze said in a casual tone. He swiftly unlocked the gate and strolled in with ease, leaving a flummoxed He Juan behind.

If it was not him, then who?! It couldn’t be... his first love?! Jealousy reared its head within He Juan’s heart again, even making the air he exhaled smelled sour. Alas, how could he express something so unreasonable like this? Wouldn’t it make him look childish to compare himself with someone from Mu Yuze’s past?

You’re already 33 years old, He Juan, how can you still be so narrow-minded?! Berating himself inwardly, He Juan could only follow the omega in.

Mu Yuze led him into the house and concisely gave him a short tour. Mu Yuze’s house was very simple, very clean, and did not look like anyone was living there. It was apparent how seldom he came home due to his demanding job.

He Juan was not even given the time to be nervous at the prospect of being alone with Mu Yuze under the same rooftop because in the next moment, Mu Yuze was summoned into the police station. After answering the call, he turned to He Juan and said with faintly a displeased look, "I have to go."

"Go on." He Juan told him with a smile. "It’s okay, I can take care of myself."

Miss Zhao Xinya’s case was still the top priority at the moment. The faster they found Miss Zhao’s murderer, the better. It was not only the police who wanted to find the culprit, but He Juan too! He still had no idea why his name could appear in the crime scene!

Mu Yuze glanced at the clock and nodded somberly. After a second deliberation, he added a few more words, "I have some frozen dishes in the refrigerator. Feel free to heat them up if you’re hungry. I don’t think I will be able to come home tonight, so don’t wait for me."

Hearing this, He Juan could not help but chuckle in mirth. This setting made him feel like a wife who was sending his husband off for work...
