Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 60: Leave It To Me
He Juan’s expression grew somber. The doubt he had for Su Xieren’s deceased girlfriend kept increasing as time went by. The mysterious secret message, the obvious warning in her letter as if she had known early on that a disaster would befall her, and also... this member card. Miss Zhao obviously did not belong to the upper class society, so where did she get this exclusive member card from?
Compared to Su Xieren, He Juan had learned some insider information from Mu Yuze. Until now, Miss Zhao’s disappearance from when she was fourteen up to sixteen years old had not been solved yet. Could this matter have something to do with the club — Phoenix Ablaze?
Being a citizen of Yuyang, there was no way He Juan did not know about this club. Previously, he had heard a few coworkers bemoaning their boss’ good luck for being able to enter the club, saying that it would be a dream come true if the same thing happened to them. Hearsay the club’s management had an extremely high standard for their patrons. They would filter the customers based on their status, wealth, reputation and other unknown criteria. And then, the eligible patrons would be granted exclusive member cards.
They were extremely secretive of the business they were doing behind closed doors. As years passed by, it became a matter to be flaunted about.
—As long as you were granted entry into Phoenix Ablaze, then it was equivalent to being admitted to the upper ladder of society.
Even if He Juan had heard a lot of mysterious rumors about this club, he was not particularly curious. For him who wanted nothing but to live an ordinary and peaceful life, this kind of bourgeois and glamor lifestyle was so out of his reach, like a mystical land that only existed in fairy tales.
Never had he expected that one day... he would find himself entangled with this issue.
Again, the most pressing answer they wanted to know was — how did this exclusive member card end up in Miss Zhao’s hands?
"In Mount Yixing, you only found these?" He Juan asked in confusion.
"Yes," Su Xieren gave a little nod. "There’s nothing else. I have double-checked it and there is no way I could have missed anything."
He Juan knew how meticulous and careful Su Xieren was. If he claimed that this was all there were, then it must be true. Sighing, He Juan could not help but massage his temples. "Xieren ah... Da-ge will be honest with you. I think this matter has already gone beyond our control. If Miss Zhao was really targeted by that side, then this has become a very tricky problem."
Su Xieren pursed his lips. "You’re trying to dissuade me from investigating further."
"Yes." He Juan looked him straight in the eye and asserted seriously. "I don’t want anything to happen to you. I don’t want to come across your corpse one day, just because you have messed with people you should not. I don’t know Miss Zhao enough to guess what she wished to do by handing this thing to you but... if I were her, then I would not want any trouble to come your way."
He Juan knew that saying something like this sounded very cruel. If their opponent was really a powerful patron in Phoenix Ablaze, then there was a high possibility that they would not be able to find Miss Zhao’s real murderer. Su Xieren might not be able to avenge her death, but... what were they supposed to do? Should they keep pressing forward even though they knew the danger awaited them in front?
"Then, what should I do?" Su Xieren’s voice was strained as he struggled to keep his turbulent emotions in check. "There is no way I can just sit still and pretend I know nothing, da-ge... I don’t even know what kind of threat Xinya has been facing all this while. What kind of boyfriend am I?"
"A very good, caring and loving boyfriend," He Juan reached out to ruffle Su Xieren’s hair, smiling. "Anyone will be extremely lucky to have you, Xieren."
Su Xieren merely pressed his lips together with his brows furrowed, it was unknown what was running through his mind. He Juan was uneasy when he saw this. He knew that Su Xieren would not do anything reckless, but now... it became all the more terrifying.
He was afraid that Su Xieren would secretly investigate behind everyone’s back and tried to gather evidence to trip the other party. Even if it took months or years, he would not give up. That was just the kind of person Su Xieren was.
As such, before the Beta could react, He Juan stretched out his hand and snatched the black card from the other’s grip, slipping it to his own pocket.
Su Xieren was shocked. "Da-ge!"
"Xieren, leave this matter to me. As for you, just stay low and wait for my news," he clasped Su Xieren’s hand and gave it a squeeze.
Compared to Su Xieren, it would have been better if he was the one who did it. He was certain that Miss Zhao’s letter was a warning. It meant that the other party had noticed Su Xieren’s existence. No wonder... he was Miss Zhao’s boyfriend for two years after all. It was only weird if they ignored Su Xieren altogether. Right now, Su Xieren might be in danger. He Juan could not sit still and watch anything happen to him!
He was really serious when he said that he did not want to see Su Xieren’s corpse. When he imagined that Su Xieren would end up like Miss Zhao one day, dying with her eyes still wide open in grievance, his chest felt so stifled as if it was crushed by a boulder.
He was Su Xieren’s da-ge, after all. If danger was really going to befall him, then it was He Juan’s job to protect him as an elder brother.
He offered Su Xieren a reassuring smile. "Trust me. You know that I have been doing odd jobs for years. The amount of network I have amassed may not lose out to you and Molei." It was a big fat lie, He Juan didn’t even know how he was going to proceed from hereon. But he should try his best to take Su Xieren’s mind off this messy matter.
"Go home," he told Su Xieren softly. "Take a nice hot bath and have eight hours of sleep. You need it, didi."
"I... da-ge..." Su Xieren still looked hesitant and wanted to protest further.
He Juan showed a helpless smile. "See, you have called me ’ge’ for years, yet every single time, it’s you who has been taking care of me." His silver eyes held nothing but sincerity, yet there was a compelling force to them that shoved Su Xieren’s protest down his throat. "This time, let me be a proper brother for you... okay?"
Su Xieren pursed his lips and the rims of his eyes suddenly reddened.
Without them realizing, they had been talking in the coffee shop for almost two hours. He Juan’s phone went off, showing a new message from Teacher Song who told him to return because the students had finished their competition. He replied with an affirmation and slipped the phone back into his pocket.
He Juan stood up. "I have to go."
"Da-ge..." Su Xieren rose from his seat as well. He looked like he had something to say, yet did not know where to start it.
He Juan stared at him for one long moment before he suddenly pulled Su Xieren into a crushing hug. He wrapped his arms around Su Xieren’s broad back and patted him twice, hard. He couldn’t care less that everyone in the cafe was staring at them as he said morosely, "I’m very sorry for your loss, didi. Call me if you need anything. I will always be here for you."
Everything had been so chaotic yesterday that he forgot to say the most important thing to Su Xieren. The dead had left this world, but the living had to stay behind and cope with the grief. No matter how calm Su Xieren looked on the outside, it must not have been easy for him.
Su Xieren stiffened and an almost imperceptible tremble shook his entire body. Slowly, he leaned his head against He Juan’s shoulders and whispered in a strained voice. "...I know. Thank you, da-ge."
He Juan let out a brief chuckle. "Silly boy, what are you thanking me for?"
He saw the Beta off before he hailed a cab back to the university. Sitting inside the car, he traced his fingertips along the hard outline of the member card inside his pocket, brows furrowing.
Now, what should he do about this little thing?
