Chapter 64: Sweet Poison

Just how did you find out this kind of information?! The same question flashed through everyone’s mind in unison.

The silence that followed was a bit awkward. Nobody had expected that Phoenix Ablaze would hide this kind of scandalous secret behind the closed door. And moreover, one of their comrades was actually well aware of this! The gazes everyone used to look at Kang Guanyu underwent a subtle change. Wow, you really can’t underestimate the innocent-looking one...

Thinking that they did not believe his words, Kang Guanyu became anxious. He stuttered out a few more words, all the while blushing furiously. "I–I am telling the truth! I heard it from a friend of my friend!"

"Yeah, yeah..." they answered perfunctorily. "We believe you."

Usually in this kind of situation, they would dispatch a few officers to sneak inside in disguise. They strived not to alarm ordinary citizens as much as possible, and when the culprit lowered their guard down and assumed that they had already escaped the chase, that was the moment the police would swoop in to capture them!

But this time... the place they were targeting was not one which any Tom, Dick, or Harry could enter! The club had very stringent security, and it was highly possible that a background check would be done as soon as they stepped inside. Everyone could not help but feel frustrated. No wonder Long Guozhi dared to saunter so boldly into the club. This damn bastard really knew how to choose a troublesome backing!

Li Zhi frowned and asked Kang Guanyu, "You don’t have the access card? We don’t need the VIP card, even the ordinary one will do."

"I–I don’t!" Kang Guanyu puffed up his cheeks like a child. "I am not a second generation young master, nor do I like to partake in BDSM. What do I need a member card for?!"

Li Zhi kneaded his forehead. What Kang Guanyu said made perfect sense, however he could not help but expect that the man would pull out a member card or something just like how he had always surprised everyone before.

"Alright, no need to get angry. At least, now we know where Long Guozhi is hiding. We may not be able to get inside, but it doesn’t mean we can’t secretly observe the surroundings from outside." He straightened up and divided the task in a concise manner. "Set up four six-hour shifts to go undercover and monitor every entrance of Phoenix Ablaze. As soon as Long Guozhi comes out, we will directly apprehend him!"

"Yes, Captain!"

The officers heaved out a big sigh of relief. They had already locked in on the suspect and confirmed his location. Now, the only thing they had to do was to wait for the snake to come out of its nest! This was a battle of endurance, and the police were good at it. At least they did not have to sit in front of the computer and inspect hundreds of surveillance footage anymore. Just recalling it was enough to send chills down their spine...

Li Zhi stood up and announced with a loud voice. "Good work, everyone! Just one last step, and we will be able to capture the perpetrator in 512[1] murder case! Officers who have not gotten the shift may go back and take a short rest, but don’t forget to keep your phone in charge! This may be the last step but also the most crucial one. We can’t let Long Guozhi escape or I will propose to the Director to have your salary deducted!"

Everyone was frightened after being threatened with their lifeline and answered especially loud, "Yes, sir!!" They knew it was not an empty threat. Their devil captain was really heartless enough to attempt something like that! 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Kang Guanyu happily volunteered to join the first shift. He did not share the misery of his brothers who had to comb through countless surveillance footage for almost ten hours, and he had also slept a bit during the journey here so currently, he was still full of energy. He appointed a few more energetic looking officers to follow him and rushed out toward Phoenix Ablaze in haste to prevent Long Guozhi from escaping.

As for Mu Yuze, he skipped through the evening shift and decisively chose the midnight shift that was the least wanted by people. His reason was very simple. He wanted to go home now to make sure that a certain someone was fine and well-fed and then tucked the aforementioned someone into the bed before he had to leave. In this way, it would not affect the total amount of time they had together.

Mu Yuze seldom used his phone because he did not like this small and delicate technology. Yet after He Juan returned, he found himself checking his phone once in a while to see if he had received another message.

Sitting inside He Juan’s car which smelled faintly of rosewood and whiskey, Mu Yuze took out his phone and replayed the last voice note He Juan had sent him. Amidst the enclosed space, He Juan’s gentle and affectionate voice echoed in his ears as he patiently elaborated his itinerary to Mu Yuze.

Mu Yuze lowered his lashes, his beautiful lips pursed into thin lines. There seemed to be a slight arc on the corner of his lips, but it was so faint that one could not be sure whether he was really smiling or not.

Juan-gege had called him ’Precious’ again...

Shrouded by the fan of thick lashes, his dark pupils trembled slightly. An intense inferno seemed to blaze in his chest, scorching his entire body from head to toe. Along with his heartbeat, his breathing also accelerated just like how it did when he heard any news – no matter how trifling it was – about He Juan, even if the Alpha was not in his presence. Closing his eyes, Mu Yuze’s jaws ticked as he struggled to keep his emotions at bay. Even knowing how volatile his mood would become, he still pressed replay and listened to He Juan’s voice again and again.

This was a sweet poison he would gladly devour, even if he knew it would eventually break him apart.

When Mu Yuze arrived at his home, the hour hand of the clock had already turned four. He had not eaten anything except a cup of instant noodles in the wee hours of the morning, but it was as if he could not feel his stomach protesting in pain. As Mu Yuze stood in front of his door, all he heard was the rapid thumping of his own heartbeat.

Why was he so nervous? He did not even feel like this when he offered to shelter He Juan in his house. Mu Yuze could not pinpoint the reason why. It’s just that... the notion of coming home to He Juan was a little too much for him to take...

He had not even prepared himself yet when there was a movement inside the house, followed by the rapid stomp of footsteps and then the door abruptly swung open in front of him, revealing his most favorite person in the entire universe.

He Juan had not changed out of his formal clothes yet. The bright smile made his eyes crinkled and his whole person seemed to radiate happiness, down to the tip of his hair. Presumably due to the heat, he had his sleeves rolled up to the crook of his arms, displaying a pair of sinewy and powerful arms that were crossed with a few light colored scars.

"Xiao Ze!" The delight in the Alpha’s tone was apparent. His silver eyes lit up like there were thousands of stars glimmering inside. "You’re finally home!"

Mu Yuze stared at him intently.

At first, this person would give you the impression that he was akin to an open book, all of his emotions could easily be seen on his face. However, after knowing him deeper, Mu Yuze came to realize that He Juan was just like a beautiful clear lake. Because it was too clear, you could not judge its depth only by vision alone and when you tried to plunge into it, you would instantly fall to the bottom and drown.

He was not a person who wore his heart on his sleeves at all. On the contrary, he was simply too capable of controlling himself that he only revealed what he wanted you to see.

At that moment, when he saw the obvious joy and deep affection in He Juan’s eyes, Mu Yuze could not help but fall into a daze. He wondered, was it what Juan-gege was feeling or... was it simply what he wanted Mu Yuze to see?
