Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 63: Secret Gathering
The technician came to them with bad news. "Not good! The number Long Guozhi was calling belonged to a burner phone! It has been deactivated and there is no way we can track it down anymore!"
Li Zhi had expected this outcome. On the contrary, if the mastermind did not show the same meticulousness as how he arranged for a criminal to kill Miss Zhao, then Li Zhi would become suspicious. "It’s okay," he told everyone. "Right now, we should follow Long Guozhi’s trajectory in the surveillance camera. Let’s see where he went after he killed Miss Zhao!"
"Yes, Captain!"
Energized, the officers buried themselves into their computer screens again, keenly sweeping through thousands of surveillance footage in order to map Long Guozhi’s movement. Minutes ticked by and the result made them grow frustrated. It was unknown for what reason, but Long Guozhi’s caution was clearly higher than most people.
They had been following him for almost two hours — and sometimes he would take advantage of back alleyways to avoid the cameras only to appear a few hundreds meters away, giving a huge headache to them who were searching for him — and in the end, he merely circled around the same area again and again!
"What was he doing?!"
"Do you think he was tracked by someone? And in order to shake them off, he could only do something like that?"
"Huh? Then the people who tracked him should appear in the surveillance footage as well, but we found nothing at all! Let me tell you, Long Guozhi, this bastard, only wanted to confuse us!"
"You mean he had guessed early on that the police would definitely find him?"
"Or else?!"
The continuous work tired everyone out. The officers’ tempers were not good to begin with and now, they had become worse. They were akin to a bomb whose fuse could light up at any moment. It was already a common reoccurrence and usually, they would argue for a while to blow off steam before they continued to work again.
However, it was obvious that a certain officer had gotten very impatient from being held back at work and was unable to go home to check on someone. He stood up abruptly, drawing the attention of many, and drew a large circle on the map. "I suggest that we focus on this area."
Everyone was stunned when Mu Yuze took the initiative to speak. Even though they had been colleagues for years, Mu Yuze’s impression on everyone stayed the same; detached, cool-headed, and competent.
When he first joined the team, Captain Li Zhi had assigned a partner for him because generally, the people in their division would work in pairs in order to support each other in time of need. But Mu Yuze straightforwardly rejected it and insisted that he could work very well by himself.
At first, they thought that this person was simply arrogant down to the bones and he would come back sooner or later with his tail between his legs, crying how he failed to complete the mission. Who could have guessed that Mu Yuze would really achieve brilliant results one after another? So far, he had not failed every single one of the tasks the Captain gave him.
There were just some people who had an inherent cold temperament and could not be approached casually. Although he was hailed as a very promising and bright junior, no one dared to break through the barrier around him because of the intense chill he exuded. They gradually accepted Mu Yuze as an anomaly in their division.
To them, he was just like a robot. He would execute what you asked him perfectly, and that’s that.
This was the first time that Mu Yuze had actively participated in their discussion! Everyone was so shocked that they could not react for a while, staring at Mu Yuze wide-eyed as if he had grown two heads.
Mu Yuze acted as if he noticed nothing and continued to relay his opinion. "The area Long Guozhi circled around is actually the boundary between the middle class and upper class area in Yuyang. Take a look at this." Everyone had not recovered yet from how many words Mu Yuze had spoken when a certain surveillance footage was zoomed to fill the screen.
Through their precise stalking, they knew that Long Guozhi had passed by this place four times before. Mu Yuze simply replayed all of them one by one, focusing on Long Guozhi’s blurry silhouette. Fortunately, it was early in the morning so there weren’t many pedestrians on the street. On the screen, they could see that... Long Guozhi had tilted his head lightly to glance at the other side. Four different time-stamp yet every single time, he repeated the same gesture as if... he was carefully considering something!
The direction was... the residential zone of the upper class citizens!
As everyone gasped at the revelation, Mu Yuze continued, "I suspect that he is waiting for a sign from the other side. We only need to focus on this camera and see if Long Guozhi will pass by after that."
The technician scrambled to play the surveillance footage Mu Yuze pointed out, but this time, at eight times the speed. As the sun arose in the sky, people started to mingle into the street, making it difficult for them to pinpoint Long Guozhi’s figure. However, it was as if Mu Yuze had a sharp laser equipped to his eyes. When they passed a certain time-stamp one and a half hours later, he suddenly exclaimed, "Stop!"
Shocked, the technician slammed his finger on the space bar, almost breaking his nail as a result.
Mu Yuze pointed at a man in a suit who followed the throng of people into the residential zone. "Here he is."
Although the man had dressed himself thoroughly with his hair slicked back and even carrying a professional briefcase at that, he could not cover the subtle limp on his leg when he threw his weight to the right — it was the remnants of wound from when he was shot when he tried to escape the police’s chase ten years ago. Not only that, Long Guozhi also had a prominent scar on his right cheek and the man... he was wearing a mask!
However, there were a lot of similar looking men walking together with him. So how did Mu Yuze notice him in an instant?
Li Zhi judged the situation and waved his hand toward the technician. "Compare their physique’s data!"
"Y–Yes, Sir!" The technician had realization dawned on him. That’s right, as long as they did a comparison, then the answer would be clear. People could be mistaken but data could not lie! The technician immediately started the program and let out a choked noise from his throat. He raised his head to look at Mu Yuze, astonished. "It is... 99% matching!"
—Holy shit, this person was really Long Guozhi in disguise!
Gazes of awe and bewilderment were cast on Mu Yuze. It was the first time they had experienced first-hand how competent Mu Yuze was, but at the same time they were also curious why he suddenly decided to join the discussion! The officers glanced at each other and saw the obvious confusion and urge to gossip in their eyes, but no one dared to step forward and ask.
Well, forget it. What was important that they had found Long Guozhi. Without Mu Yuze’s help, they would have still followed behind him in circles and wasted a lot of time! Not to mention this bastard Long Guozhi still had a final trick up his sleeves. Without Mu Yuze’s sharp eyes, they might have lost him in the middle!
"Mu Yuze, you..."
"Awesome!"
The atmosphere turned rowdy in an instant.
"Let this brother treat you for a drink after we close this case, what do you say?!"
"That’s right, that’s right, we have been colleagues for so many years but we have never gone out drinking together! It is illogical!"
Mu Yuze swept his gaze over everyone. "I appreciate it but..." he said in a frank tone. "...there is no need. I only want to go home faster."
Everyone’s eyes widened in shock. And then, they suddenly broke out in guffaws. "Even the perfect Mu Yuze is still a human after all!"
"Yeah, you’re right, I haven’t changed at all for two days. Come, come and smell how stinky I am!"
"Scram! You will suffocate Laozi to death!"
Thanks to Mu Yuze’s brutal honesty, the tension in the air loosened and everyone returned to their cheerful and energetic mood. The premise of going home, taking a shower and crashing down on the bed was especially strong at the moment. Not only Mu Yuze, they also wanted to catch the culprit as soon as possible!
They excitedly trailed along Long Guozhi’s figure right after he entered the residential zone. There were a lot of sophisticated buildings in the area; high-end condominiums, private villas, shopping malls, parks, exclusive clubs...
The officers practically glued their faces to the screen, unwilling to let Long Guozhi escape from their sight. Presumably thinking that he had finally entered a safe area, Long Guozhi lowered his guard and casually sauntered into a chic-looking building dominated in black and gold. There was a huge logo of a blazing phoenix on top.
"This... This is the Phoenix Ablaze!" Someone exclaimed in extreme shock. "Oh my God, Long Guozhi actually entered Phoenix Ablaze! Look at how confident he is, it is certainly not his first time doing so!"
The officers saw red. Of course, they knew what kind of reputation Phoenix Ablaze held. And exactly because they knew that it became all the more shocking. It couldn’t be... the mastermind was the owner of the club?!
"Phoenix Ablaze?" Kang Guanyu, who had just returned from the garbage disposal area and taken a short shower to get rid of the pungent smell, popped his head in with his hair still dripping with water. "Did I hear someone say Phoenix Ablaze...?" His expression was so weird that nobody could ignore it.
Li Zhi gave him a sideway glance and threw a clean towel to his head. "What’s wrong with Phoenix Ablaze?"
"Well..." Kang Guanyu murmured something under his breath, too low to be heard by others. Then he rubbed his hair with the towel with jerky movements, obviously uncomfortable.
"Damn it, you’d better say it now or else Laozi will beat you up!" An impatient officer piped in with a frustrated look.
"I say..." Kang Guanyu took a deep breath to brace himself. His mysterious manner only made everyone become more curious. "I heard it from a friend of my friend..."
"Yeah, yeah..." everyone had gotten used to Kang Guanyu’s strangely extensive network and urged him to continue. "And then?!"
A suspicious blush crawled over Kang Guanyu’s cheeks. He shut his eyes and blurted out in one breath, "This Phoenix Ablaze, under the guise of a normal high-end club, is actually a secret gathering for BDSM enthusiasts! Only the chosen members with VIP black cards are able to enter the gathering!!"
