Chapter 68: Lone Wolf

He Juan stared at himself in the full body mirror and almost could not recognize who it was. Clothes really do make the man, he mused.

The two-piece deep gray suits that hugged his body seemed to have been tailored just for him, highlighting his broad shoulders, chiseled chest before tapering down to his waist. The straight trousers made his legs look even longer. The whole set of apparels gave off a faint intimidating aura as if he was really a high-level executive in a multi billionaire company...

As he continued to stare at himself in the mirror, the faint nagging on the back of his mind grew stronger. He was certain he had never worn such a grandiose outfit before so... where did this sense of familiarity come from?

"How is it going, Mr. He— oh God!" Kang Guanyu popped his head into the tailoring room only to be bedazzled by the sight of He Juan in a suit. He covered his eyes and let out an exaggerated groan. "My eyes... thank you, Lord, my eyes have been blessed today!"

Kang Guanyu had finished his shift for the day and because of the free time, he volunteered to introduce He Juan to this high-quality imitation boutique which was opened by his good brother.

He Juan almost got a heart attack when he stepped into the boutique only to see various suits and dresses which seemed to cost more than his kidney. It was not until Kang Guanyu assured him again and again, even to the point of pulling his brother out to explain, that this was really a high-quality imitation shop, did He Juan finally let his guard down.

Otherwise if he were to ruin these clothes tonight, he was afraid that he would not be able to repay it even if he sold himself!

He Juan was amused by the officer’s exaggerating reaction and forgot his nervousness for a second. But when he saw the expensive-looking watch and shiny leather shoes Kang Guanyu brought in with him, the laughter once again got stuck in his throat. "Those are..."

"These? These are for you to wear ah. You can’t be wearing shabby things in there, can you?" Kang Guanyu said in an airy tone as he placed the shoes in front of He Juan. When he straightened up and saw He Juan’s tight expression, he burst out in delightful laughter. "It’s okay, Mr. He. I assure you that these are all imitations! They look like the real deal, don’t they? That’s why it’s high-quality! Don’t worry, I have told my brother to give you a discount— wait, no, it’s the police who should reimburse the cost. After all, you’re an ordinary citizen who assists with our undercover work. It’s only natural for us to support you with our all!"

He Juan knew that Kang Guanyu was trying to cheer him up and his facial expression softened. "Thank you so much, Officer Kang. I’m just a little nervous. If I mess something up—"

"Don’t worry about it!" Kang Guanyu waved him off with a bright smile. "Rest assured, Mu Yuze will be there with you! He is our most capable member! It’s just that..." a desire to gossip surfaced in his bright eyes. "Of all people, I didn’t expect Mu Yuze to volunteer to come with you! I thought it would be me or Chen Lian or other officers. My point is, you should see everyone’s face when Mu Yuze signed himself up to the task. Oh God, that was priceless!!"

Kang Guanyu laughed so hard that he almost stumbled to the ground, his face flushed red and eyes glistening with tears. Helpless, He Juan could only listen to him ramble about how someone had dropped their cup noodles and how another someone had directly walked into the wall.

"Is it that shocking?" He asked, curious. After all, in He Juan’s eyes, it was reasonable that Mu Yuze was the one who accompanied him. For starters, he was the one who knew the entire truth about where the member card came from, and he was also the one who had put in the request to directly infiltrate Phoenix Ablaze from within. But judging from how excessive Kang Guanyu was, it looked like there was more than what meets the eye.

Kang Guanyu shook his head as if he was bemoaning how oblivious He Juan was. "Oh don’t get me started, Mr. He. Do you know what Mu Yuze’s nickname is among our team?"

Now He Juan’s curiosity was piqued. "What is it?"

Kang Guanyu snickered then leaned forward to whisper as if the room was filled with people and not the two of them alone. "Lone wolf." His eyes twinkled in mirth when he saw how taken aback He Juan was. "I am not kidding you. That’s literally how Mu Yuze is. Oh God, you have no idea how awkward the atmosphere was when he first transferred into the team. He was so cold, grumpy and unwilling to socialize. Not only that, he also rejected partners."

He Juan imagined a younger version of Mu Yuze who exuded an aura that kept people a few thousand miles away, and his heart could not help but squeeze painfully. "...Really?"

"Uh-huh. Rookies are generally assigned into two or three person teams when they first start with a mission, even veterans rarely act alone, but Mu Yuze insisted on doing it by himself! Our captain’s blood pressure spiked so high at that time. Who doesn’t know how dangerous each criminal is? They might only be a petty thief, but people who were backed into a corner would not hesitate to harm others..."

"Then..." He Juan swallowed past his aching throat. He could not imagine how arduous that period of time was for Mu Yuze. An omega navigating through the prejudiced society, alone and defensive, fighting against Betas and Alphas who looked down on him. The more He Juan thought about it, the more terrible he felt. "Was he... okay?"

Kang Guanyu abruptly realized that this was not a nice topic to talk about, especially when they were going on a mission together. If he talked bad about Mu Yuze, then He Juan would become more nervous!

"Of course, he’s okay!" Kang Guanyu beamed and patted He Juan’s shoulder in a familiar gesture. "I’ve told you, Mr. He, he is our most capable member! He is strong, domineering and brilliant. You don’t need to be afraid at all!"

I am not afraid, He Juan thought helplessly. Well, maybe I am. A little.

Resigning to his fate, He Juan finally took the watch from Kang Guanyu and carefully wore it around his wrist. He belatedly realized that almost half an hour had already passed since Mu Yuze went to search for a suitable outfit. "What took him so long?" He could not help but wonder.

"Well, I don’t blame him," Kang Guanyu replied with a shrug. "In one glance, it’s obvious that you will be acting as the S, so he can only take the M part. It’s really not easy to find a costume..." Kang Guanyu glanced at the door and hesitated. "Should I give him some help?"

He completely did not realize that behind him, He Juan’s face had become completely weird.

What did Officer Kang just say? S and M? It couldn’t be what he was thinking about... right?

He cleared his throat to attract the other’s attention. "Excuse me, Officer Kang..." He Juan tried to pull up the corner of his lips, even though it must have looked quite stiff. "That S and M... what are you talking about?"

For a second, Kang Guanyu stared at him with a blank look as if he could not figure out why He Juan would ask something like that. And then, something suddenly clicked in his mind and he gasped in horror, his hand flying to his mouth. "Oh. My. God. Mr. He... you... you don’t know what kind of place you will be going into?!"

He Juan belatedly realized that something was not right with their current situation. Scratching his cheek, he gave a tentative guess. "Isn’t it a rich people’s night club?"

"Jesus Christ!" Kang Guanyu gaped at him with a horrified look, causing He Juan’s heart to sink. Then, the officer took a deep breath and stared at He Juan seriously. "Okay, listen to me, Mr. He, Phoenix Ablaze is not your average club. It is—"

Before Kang Guanyu could finish his words, the door to the vast tailoring room clicked open and Mu Yuze walked in.
