Chapter 349: Chapter 258: Extremely Ferocious_2

"Wait!"

The line went dead on the other end.

Looking out of the window, it had already gotten dark.

The driver checked on his feverish comrade again, showing not a hint of concern, but rather a strong sense of disgust.

If he wasn’t worried that dumping the man outside would bring more unnecessary trouble, and time being of the essence, he would have loved to toss him into the mountains to feed the wild beasts!

So annoying!

Just f**king couldn’t help himself!

The snake was fine in its box, but he just had to take it out to play!

Screwed up my big plan!

Serves him right!

You’re not touching a cent of this job’s pay!

After eating something at random, the driver decided to rest first, ensuring he’d be fully energized for what was to come.

It was still early, and there was some noise from outside.

He dozed off for a while and then heard the sound of rats scuttling outside.

Squeaking incessantly—it was unclear whether they were flirting or brawling, but it was intense with the sound of objects being knocked over and the curses of the surrounding residents.

The rat noises stopped after a while.

Oh.

There were cat calls.

Wild cats had been drawn by the scent to scavenge for food.

This really wasn’t a good place, but everything was only temporary.

He thought to himself that very soon, he would have money.

He had it all planned out—how to spend the money once he got it.

He drifted back into a light sleep.

In his dreams, a blur of intoxication and extravagance.

Until the dream was interrupted by the ringing of his phone.

The people coming to pick up the goods had arrived.

The driver instantly became alert.

It seemed the employer didn’t trust them, arranging for people to be on standby along the route to deal with emergencies.

If they were truly at the border, there was no way they could have arrived so quickly.

He set a meeting point with the pickup people at a nearby night market where the foot traffic was complicated, and their arrival wouldn’t draw attention.

He didn’t give away the specific address of the private residence directly; he would decide which plan to follow after he met the pickup person.

He didn’t bring the small python with him. Without his partner, the driver didn’t dare go to the handoff alone. He feared that before he got his hands on the money, he’d lose his life.

The box with the python was initially to be hidden in the bedroom, but after some thought, he chose another spot.

He couldn’t ensure that no one would sneak in during the time he was away.

The space here was small and somewhat cluttered.

Especially the dining area, where the previous tenant left behind garbage, with cardboard boxes and empty bottles piled up in one corner.

He placed the box with the python on top of the kitchen cabinet. The python stayed silent inside the box, not making a sound.

Amidst the jumble of household trash, the small box went unnoticed.

He also took down a T-shirt that was drying outside the window, moved the indoor laundry rack into the dining area, and hung the clothes there.

The laundry rack conveniently blocked the pile of trash.

Due to the limited indoor space, if the rack wasn’t in the bedroom, it had to be in the dining area, as many tenants would do.

This way, anyone who entered wouldn’t immediately go through the cabinet.

Before leaving, he locked the bedroom window. The bathroom didn’t have a window, so no need to worry about that.

The dining area had a narrow, sliding window. One couldn’t fit through it, but leaving half open for ventilation with a mosquito screen would prevent insects from coming in.

There was still a sick person in the room who required a ventilated window; they couldn’t afford for him to suffocate now.

After checking everything once more and turning off the lights, he made a small mark on the door lock as he left.

Once he was gone, the room was plunged into darkness.

In the quiet room, the only sound was the labored breathing of the patient in the bedroom.

Sometime later.

A furry paw pried open the screen of the dining area window.

The skilled maneuver clearly belonged to a seasoned culprit.

Wild cats were a common sight in the area.

Last year, there were efforts to control them, but as rats became too numerous, the cats were allowed to roam free.

Since then, the wild cat population exploded. While they dealt with the rodent problem, they also became a nuisance for the residents.

Some cunning old cats, for instance, would break into homes to steal!

The intruding cat looked rather unimpressive, but each jump was incredibly agile, and it made almost no noise—an excellent nocturnal hunter.

There was a scent of food on the dining table.

But the wild cat only took a sniff, then uninterestedly turned its attention elsewhere.

It had followed a delicious scent here that had caught its attention as it passed by the window.

The cat’s triangular nose worked rapidly to sift through the smells in the air, its upper lip curling slightly. The cat’s Jacobson’s organ was in full use thanks to its flehmen response.

Where is it?

The wild cat sniffed around, and soon, the beast’s night-time eyes gleamed with excitement as it fixed its gaze on a box on the cabinet.

The small python inside the box sensed danger approaching and opened its mouth in warning and threat.

However, given its current size, it wasn’t much of a threat to an adult cat.

Not to mention that the cat couldn’t see through the box, but even if it could, it wouldn’t be scared.

The cat scratched the side of the box, then bit at the lid.

The python struck out towards the cat a few times, but only hit the box, as it was blocked by the barrier.

The cat paused, its whiskers twitching, and then resumed biting at the lid.

Impatient, it pawed and squeezed the box until it succeeded in pushing it off the cabinet.

Bang!

The lid came off.

The small python crawled out and quickly slithered into the pile of clutter next to it.

When the driver returned, he first checked the door lock, which hadn’t been tampered with.

Upon entering and turning on the light, he immediately saw the box for the python on the floor with its lid open.

A wild cat was squatting there.

The driver, hair nearly standing on end from shock, rushed over to chase the cat away.

In a panic, the cat fled through the window.

The two men who followed behind into the house grimaced at the sight of the dingy living quarters.

"Where’s the snake?" one of them asked.

The driver picked up the empty box from the floor, his face ashen, "It was still inside earlier."
