Chapter 386: Chapter 281 Captain Wen Asked Me to Bring You a Benefit_1

After chatting with Station Chief Yao, Feng Yi used the rescue station’s phone to check in with Captain Wen.

His solo mission application had been approved through Captain Wen, and he would definitely have to report back at the end of his journey. However, given the limited resources at the rescue station, he couldn’t go into detail; since he wasn’t far from leaving the mountains, he decided to give Captain Wen a thorough debrief after he got out.

After the call, Feng Yi made a brief phone call to Jia.

Using the rescue station’s public phone line, Feng Yi didn’t say much, just a message to let Jia know that he would soon be out of the mountains.

Jia, of course, understood what Feng Yi left unsaid.

Knowing Feng Yi, aside from emergencies, making this call meant that Jia should prepare extra food.

He must have been quite hungry during this trip in the mountains, right?

With so many protected animals in the mountains and current regulations, Feng Yi couldn’t "live off the land" unless it was an emergency.

Conserving food in the mountains meant he definitely deserved a feast... or several, once he got out.

As for Feng Yi’s safety in the mountains, Jia wasn’t worried at all!

The night Feng Yi arrived at the rescue station, he stayed there.

There were guest rooms available, and though small, Feng Yi was the only visitor, undisturbed.

The next day, Feng Yi woke up early and, pulling back the curtains, saw the dazzling sunlight outside.

It looked to be good weather.

Station Chief Yao gave Feng Yi a once-over and, seeing he was in good spirits, knew that Feng Yi had slept well that night.

"You probably didn’t get much good sleep in the mountains these days?"

Feng Yi: "... It was okay."

He couldn’t exactly admit he slept wherever he wanted without restraint in the mountains.

Compared to Feng Yi, Station Chief Yao looked more fatigued. It was clear that he hadn’t rested well. The giant panda that Feng Yi had brought in was still being treated. Station Chief Yao had to be ready for various situations and determine appropriate treatment methods.

The rescue station’s breakfast was modest, but Feng Yi wasn’t picky; he just continued to control his portion size.

Eating with restraint, Feng Yi asked about the condition of the giant panda he’d brought in last night.

Station Chief Yao smiled, "Its life is definitely saved. The one you brought in is lucky."

Captive-bred giant pandas were sometimes released back into the wild, with varying degrees of success.

There were positive outcomes as well as regrettable ones.

They had seen too much of it here.

Last month, another rescue station had saved a released giant panda that was seriously injured and had to amputate a limb.

Instances of being injured while fighting for a mate or falling from trees were not uncommon. Captive-bred giant pandas released back into the wild definitely have a competitive disadvantage compared to their wild counterparts, and being rescued timely was already fortunate.

"Our rescue station’s resources are limited, so it must be transferred to the nearest wildlife rescue center for better treatment," said Station Chief Yao to Feng Yi, "I’ve already contacted them yesterday; they will send a car to pick it up today. You can ride with them when you leave."

Feng Yi nodded, "That works, if they have a spare seat I’ll go with them; if not, I can walk on my own."

Remembering his call with Captain Wen, Feng Yi added, "I need to stop by the South Monitoring Station first, which isn’t too far from here. Is the rescue center’s car going that way?"

Station Chief Yao laughed, "The district monitoring station, eh? Wait for me for half a day; I’ll drive you there myself, I have some business there too."

After Station Chief Yao left, Feng Yi, with nothing else to do, walked around the small rescue station. He hadn’t paid much attention last night and now had time to take a closer look.

There was nothing out of the ordinary, but Feng Yi noticed that some areas on the ground were sprinkled with a circle of powder.

It had rained last night, so this powder had been freshly sprinkled. It wasn’t much, just around the outside of the rescue station.

Feng Yi sniffed it and, seeing a staff member passing by, asked:

"Is this to repel snakes?"

"Right, it serves a similar purpose, mainly to prevent snakes from crawling in, but it’s not poisonous. Actually, snakes don’t necessarily fear this powder; it’s more of an annoyance for them. It’s like how someone who dislikes coriander will avoid it when they smell it; but to say it’s toxic, that would be exaggerating," the staff member explained.

The powder was not processed with any complex chemical procedures and would not significantly impact the local ecosystem, even if washed away by rain.

There were many poisonous snakes in the mountains, and since the station did not have anti-venom serum, they employed some eviction methods to avoid accidental injuries. Snake venom could be deadly.

After the staff member left, Feng Yi squatted down and, out of curiosity, touched some of the powder on the ground with his finger, brought it close, paused slightly, and then sniffed it carefully under his nose.

Then he displayed an expression of disgust, as if he had encountered a "nasty surprise ingredient."

After wiping the powdered finger on a leaf, Feng Yi turned to look in another direction, where another employee was standing.

The staff member, in his forties, was holding a tea mug, watching Feng Yi.

Seeing Feng Yi looking over, the man smiled, walked over with his tea mug and casual coat, and said to Feng Yi:

"I saw you crouching there as soon as I stepped outside. I thought you were going to taste what flavor that powder was."

He was ready to stop Feng Yi, but it turned out he was just smelling it.

It gave him quite a scare, as he had just been thinking how rash the youth of today are.

Ah, it was all a misunderstanding!

While reflecting, the man’s smile carried a hint of apology.

Feng Yi also put on a polite smile and greeted him.

After washing his hands at a nearby pool, Feng Yi asked if there was anything he could help with around the station.
