Chapter 382: 185. Winter Camping (7)
Back at the cabin, the two young ladies were occupied, and Dubian Che also returned to his assigned room.
The boys were already back, sweaty and smelly clothes were strewn all over the floor, and four of them were gathered around playing mahjong.
"Dubian, where did you go?" Saito Huijie casually asked while sorting his cards.
"I took advantage of your absence to soak in the hot spring alone," replied Dubian Che.
"You’re the smart one," the class president adjusted his glasses with his index finger, "When we went, wherever we looked, there was someone’s behind right in front of our faces."
"Dubian, are you going to join us? I can let you in," asked another boy with a slightly distant relationship, in the room of five.
"No thanks, you go ahead, I’m just going to read for a bit."
"See, who else dares to be jealous of Dubian’s number one national ranking? It’s all about hard work!" Kunii Shuichi held a long betting stick in his mouth, "Wait, don’t move the tiles, Chow!"
"Can you not keep that in your mouth? It’d be all saliva if you win," retorted Saito Huijie.
"We’ll see if you can win!"
"Sorry, Tsumo."
"It’s a lie, right?!"
The noise from their card game nearly lifted off the roof.
Dubian Che dug out "Chasing Water Years" from his bag and left the room, planning to find a quiet place.
He tucked the book under his arm and wandered aimlessly with his hands in his pockets.
Just as he was about to head to the café to read and enjoy the snowy view, he ran into Xiaoquan Aonai and Akiko head-on.
Light snow was falling; they shared an umbrella, their breath steaming beyond its edge.
"Dubian?" Xiaoquan Aonai looked over.
"Good evening, teachers," Dubian Che replied, hands still in his pockets, "Where have you been?"
"I underestimated you, Mr. Dubian," Akiko said with a look of admiration.
"..."
With a light nudge from her elbow, Xiaoquan Aonai addressed Dubian Che:
"We’re just coming back from dinner, where are you off to? The snow will get worse, and the school has forbidden students from going out; you must stay in the dormitories. Didn’t your dormmates tell you?"
"They’re playing mahjong."
"These kids..." Xiaoquan Aonai sighed in resignation, "If you have something to do, the teachers can accompany you."
"It’s okay, they’re too noisy; I just wanted to find a quiet place to read," Dubian Che hinted with a look at "Chasing Water Years" in his arms.
"Such diligence, young man," Akiko spoke with a tone that somehow didn’t sound serious, "Come to our teacher’s dormitory. It’s just me and Aonai, we won’t disturb you."
Xiaoquan Aonai thought for a moment and looked at Dubian Che with an inquiring gaze.
"No need, I’ll go back and watch them play mahjong," Dubian Che said, turning to leave.
"Come back!" Akiko stepped out from under the umbrella and grabbed his shoulders with both hands, "I’m very curious about your romantic escapades, come to our room and share with us."
Dubian Che looked at Xiaoquan Aonai with pleading eyes.
"Akiko has been talking to me about it up till now," Xiaoquan Aonai said with a wry smile.
"Don’t think you can escape, come with me!"
"Akiko, stop pushing, I’m dropping my book!"
After walking only a few steps, the book really did fall onto the snowy ground, but Akiko still pushed him along as if afraid he’d run away.
Xiaoquan Aonai watched the two with a helpless smile.
She bent down, picked up the book, and followed them.
The teachers’ room was more lavish than the students’.
TV, mini-fridge, tea room, and even a heated table with two large beds.
Akiko pushed Dubian Che into the heated table, which had a basket of oranges on top.
Xiaoquan Aonai took off her coat, prepared tea, and sat down at the heated table as well.
Akiko, with cold hands, warm them between her legs, and said eagerly to Dubian Che:
"Go on!"
"Say what?"
"About you, Kiyono Lin, and Jiutiao Meiji—the two young ladies!"
"Meiji is my girlfriend, and Kiyono is a friend," Dubian Che picked up his tea with both hands, "End of story."
"Don’t play dumb!" Akiko raised her hand, slapped the table with an empty threat, and then hastily put it back between her legs.
"I’m not pretending, I’m genuinely confused. Akiko, what are you really getting at?"
"Still pretending! Then tell me, why were you running out of the women’s bathhouse?"
"I was curious."
"Curious? You think normal people would believe such a story?"
"I was truly curious, I just went in to look around when no one was there."
Xiaoquan Aonai peeled two oranges, offered them to each, and then continued to peel her own, watching the two argue with a smile.
As Akiko pressed on relentlessly and Dubian Che dodged her questions, discussing everything from orange juice to criticizing the opulence of the teacher’s room, and eventually reminiscing about the winter in Iwate Prefecture, a knocking sounded.
"Knock knock knock," a very polite way of knocking.
"Who is it?" Xiaoquan Aonai stood up from the heated table and walked to the door.
Dubian Che didn’t hear the door open, but a gust of cold air told him that it had been.
"Mr. Xiaoquan, good afternoon."
"Kiyono? Good afternoon, what’s up?"
"I’d like to request permission to go out, just to the café, and I will stay there to read."
"Are the others in your dorm playing mahjong too?"
"Hm?" Dubian Che imagined Kiyono Lin’s puzzled and cute head-tilt.
Then he heard Kiyono Lin explain:
"They are playing, but I wanted to read, so I feel bad for making noise. I don’t want to accept other’s kindness because it would inconvenience them."
"I see, then go ahead."
"What do you mean, go ahead!" Akiko dashed over, grabbed Kiyono Lin’s slender wrist even with winter clothing on, "You came at just the right time. Interrogating like this requires having two ’criminals’."
"Akiko..."
Kiyono Lin and Xiaoquan Aonai didn’t finish speaking, as Akiko had already pulled Kiyono Lin, whose ’combat strength was 3, but dropped to 1 in winter’, into the room.
