Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 217: A Share Buying Scam
Chapter 217: A Share Buying Scam
The next morning, Serena waited at the door for her sister to come downstairs to speak with her.
In her head she cursed, ’That damned bitch, she came home so late I didn’t catch her.’ she had wanted to interrogate her and find out what she had told Brooke, but Sarah had slipped carefully out of her reach.
Fortunately, she woke up early to get ready to pick up her daughter from Julian’s place and used the opportunity to confront Sarah.
"Ah, so you finally show your face!" Serena said the moment her eyes fell on her sister coming down from the stairs.
Sarah kept a stoic expression as she made her way into the kitchen, ignoring her sister. Serena however followed strictly behind, her anger drawn explicitly across her face.
"You have some nerve to come here after that stunt you nearly pulled!" She scolded, blocking Sarah from opening the fridge. Folding her arms across her chest she interrogated, "I heard you went off with Brooke yesterday, tell me, where did you go? And what did you tell her?"
Sarah tried to reach for an apple, but Serena grabbed her wrist, "Everything in this house belongs to me. If you’re going to ignore me, you’d better get out!"
Her sister scoffed in disbelief, "You’d kick out your flesh and blood? Isn’t that crossing the line?"
But Serena could not be bothered. "Answer me first, where did you go last night? And what did you two discuss?" As of that time, Serena’s plan was riding on Brooke and Julian never seeing each other.
One wrong move could send everything she set up crashing down.
Sarah frowned, "What does it matter to you what we talked about? You were never a mother to Brooke in the past, you can’t suddenly start pretending to care because her father got into wealth."
Serena hissed, "That’s rich coming from the person who stole from me and went abroad. Did your moral compass not work back then?" She asked referring to when Sarah first got the offer to join a start up company abroad.
But the offer was a plain offer, no expenses were promised to be paid and Sarah was desperately in need of the money. So much so that, the savings Serena had kept stashed away in her apartment, Sarah, one night nabbed them all and used it to leave the country.
But Sarah was unconvinced. "Don’t act like some saint, that was probably stolen money, all I did was put it to good use."
Her sister sneered, "And by good news you mean drowning in debt?"
Sarah gasped, "H-How did you find out?"
Resting her hands on her hips, Serena lecturered, "Don’t act like you didn’t want us to find out. You registered me and Scott as your emergency contacts, of course the bank called us when they couldn’t get a hold of you."
A laugh escaped Serena’s lips, "You fled the country with a rack of debt and came back here like the shameless bitch you are. I can’t even imagine how you got across the border." She laughed harder, making a mockery of Sarah’s plight.
Gripping tightly onto the knife in her hand, Sarah gritted her teeth. "It wasn’t my fault! They fooled us into thinking we bought shares in that company for a cheaper rate!"
"Excuses! You made a shifty investment and got what you deserved. Now you’re here trying to ruin my business! But know this I won’t allow it! I raised those children by myself, all the money I can squeeze out of them is mine and mine alone." Serena stated in a clear cut tone.
But flashes of Sarah’s experience haunted her thoughts. She hung her head on her shoulders and chanted in a frantic trance, "I was robbed, they fooled all of us."
Her sister rolled her eyes, "Oh? And who was the one who tricked you?" Serena tainted, gaining satisfaction from her sister’s misery.
Her tone spiteful, she raised her head and said with bloodshot eyes, "The Graysons!’
Gilbert marched into Thane’s study with his tablet in one hand and a file in the other, ready to make a report. He placed the file in front of Thane then began the rundown.
"Master Grayson, I’ve looked into Brooke’s aunt as per your request." He announced as Thane opened the file.
"Is there anything interesting in particular?" He asked, a nonchalant expression on his face.
First, there was Serena, and then there was Scott and now Sarah. He was disappointed with each of her family, he only sought to investigate them to protect his wife.
"Yes, there was something about her background that might interest you." As soon as he said that, Thane flipped to a page, which had a printed article attached to it.
He read the headlines for a bit, then raised his head, slightly stunned, "She was one of them?"
Gilbert nodded, "Yes, Brooke’s aunt was one of the victims of the twenty nineteen investment scandal your family faced. She, and four other victims tried to take your family to court, however they lost the case and faced dire consequences."
Thane frowned, he recalled the scandal that had caused quite a stir back home. Apparently, someone was selling shares of his family’s business at a lower rate to the public.
Of course, the shares were fake and so was the peddler. Also, the Grayson family had no idea that this was happening until the court case was filed.
"Does she have any unpaid debt?" Thane asked. He also remembered the victims had prior taken loans and sold properties to gain access to their business’ shares.
These loans taken were no small figure, although the shares were being sold at a cheaper rate, it did not mean it was suddenly loose change, or else the unsuspecting buyers would not have been fooled so easily.
Gilbert nodded, "Two million to her bank, and over fifteen million owed to various loan sharks. This woman in particular also lost the court case and was sued by the Grayson family for defamation of character. Though, the family hasn’t made a move on collecting the fifty million compensation fee the court granted."
Thane sighed as he relaxed into his chair. "What do you think, Gilbert?"
Gilbert blinked twice, "What are you asking for my opinion of?"
"About the scammer. I find it ridiculous that someone could have been able to pull that off so easily without getting caught. Someone like Edward would never let this sort of thing go." Thane pointed out.
"Master Grayson, what exactly are you insinuating? That a family member was involved in the scam?" Gilbert inquired.
Thane kept a calm demeanor, "Also, isn’t it strange that they had company sensitive information to share to the victims? That was what ended up selling the story and attracting so many buyers. Company sensitive information that not just anyone could have."
Gilbert suggested, "They could’ve hired a hacker for that."
"Yes," he picked up his pen and gave it a slight twirl, "They could have, but why do I get the feeling that this matter stems much more deeper than everyone is letting on?" He asked staring into the distance .
