The situation escalated when Ethan insisted on hitting Axel to teach him a lesson for going against him, and Axel refused to leave Brooke’s side, provoking Ethan even more.

Thankfully, the captain had Axel and Brooke sent out of the interrogation room and into a separate office to wait for his instructions.

Once they were alone, Axel let out a hiss and punched the wall, startling Brooke. She raised her head to see the officer fuming with rage!

"Officer-" she tried to call out to him, but he beat her to it.

"Tell me, how are you involved with Ethan Halton?" he asked all of a sudden.

Brooke rolled her tongue around her mouth. Ethan had already made it clear that they had something going on, denying it now might just cause her extra problems.

"I used to work at his office as an intern." She said.

"That bastard! He really is an animal! If I hadn’t stepped in, would he have hit you?" Axel asked in disbelief.

Brooke blinked twice, "W-What about you?" she ignored his question, "You...you seem to have a grudge against Mr Halton."

Axel scoffed, "A grudge doesn’t quite cut it. That bastard is a good for nothing piece of human scum." He balled his fists, and clenched his jaw.

Brooke furrowed her brows, this man had been done in by her ex in some way. She immediately got up from her seat and stood in front of him, piercing into his thoughts.

Axel who had been too absorbed in his thoughts and memories met an electrifying shock when he raised his head only to see a pretty woman staring at him so intently.

He backed away.

Brooke stepped forward, "Please, tell me! How did Ethan screw you over? What is your connection to him?" She interrogated.

Axel averted his eyes from her straightforward gaze to the cuffs on her wrist. "Don’t get ahead of yourself, you’re still a suspect of an attempted murder."

But Brooke stood her ground, "I’m being set up! How coincidental is it that I get arrested and Mr Halton shows up out of nowhere? He might’ve set everything up just to get me back."

"Get you back? Weren’t you just an intern? Why would that bastard want you back?" he inquired, leading the conversation away from his agenda.

Brooke bit her lip, he had turned the conversation back to her. She sighed, "He was a very violent boss, I barely managed to escape him. He must still harbor some sort of grudge against me. You saw how aggravated he was just now. If it weren’t for you, I would’ve been harmed just now."

Axel pinched his chin, Ethan was a piece of crap, and he knew just how far he was willing to go to satisfy his ego.

What he wasn’t sure of was what this woman’s role was in the mix.

Naturally, he could tell when someone was lying from their body language, but this woman was either telling the truth or was just that good an actress and had him completely fooled.

Running his fingers through his hair, Axel let out a huge sigh, "Well, none of that matters anyway. You aren’t the first one to make a complaint about Ethan, the man is simply untouchable, people like him can commit a crime and the whole station would turn a blind eye." He spoke in a vengeful tone.

Brooke noted in her head that it was likely Axel had filed a complaint or knew someone who filed a complaint against Ethan.

Back when she was his intern, she recalled a few calls from the police station, about some complaints filed against Ethan.

But at the time, she was madly in love with him and believed him when he said he was being accused wrongly. She actually believed the people filing the complaint were merely after his money, and turned a blind eye to the possibility of him deceiving her.

Axel went on, "I’m sure the captain won’t let me off the hook so easily. For simply protecting a helpless woman, my job could be on the line." He rested the back of his head against the wall, a weary look in his eye.

Brooke parted her lips to say something, but their conversation was cut short. The door to the office was pushed open and in came two officers, the same ones who had cuffed her and led her to the interrogation room.

"Brooke Larson, you’re free to go." The older officer announced, holding up the keys to her cuffs.

Axel and Brooke exchanged quick glances.

Brooke echoed, "I’m free to go?"

*Slap*

The police captain closed his eyes when Ethan raised his hand and cracked a heavy slap on his face.

"Idiot! How dare you go against me?!" he raged, raising his hand for another strike.

The captain tried to explain, "It would look bad if I-"

*Slap*

Another tight slap cut him off rudely.

"Shut the hell up! I don’t care what excuses you have! You’re going to go and have my wife released and handed over to me. And as for that detective, you’re going to have him fired, do you understand?!" Ethan demanded.

His face bleeding from all the hits, the captain informed him, "I can’t override my superior’s orders. But as for the detective I swear to have him taken care of..."

"What superior?! Who called for her arrest?" he demanded, "I’ll make the bastard suffer-" he was saying but got cut off by the sudden arrival of an officer.

The captain swiftly turned around, hiding his face, "Who permitted you to come in here?!"

The subordinate apologized, "I’m sorry but we just got a call to have Miss Larson taken out of custody."

The captain barked at him, "How many times do I have to say this?! No one is allowed to take that woman out of this station-"

The officer cut him off, "By captain, the order came from a superior office."

The captain and Ethan shared a frown.

"From whose office?" The captain asked. The head of the country’s police force had given his word, just who could hold more power than him?

The officer inhaled sharply then announced, "From the office of the president, Captain!"
