Chapter 89: A Slight Change In Casting
*Moments Earlier*
"Wait a moment Damien! I’ll fix this!" Lucas called out to him.
"Fix this? Ha! The way you fixed your father’s company?" He laughed, while strutting away. "Everyone one knows how incompetent you are, I’m surprised I let myself go alone with this." He spat out, charging towards the elevator.
Just as he was about to go inside, he collided with Sadie, who sprinted out of the elevator, dressed in a hoodie and a mask.
"Ouch! Watch it! Can’t you see-" he kept quiet when his gaze landed on Sadie, the woman allegedly sleeping with Lucas.
A laugh escaped his lips. "What is this? Don’t tell me you still haven’t dropped this woman?" He ran his fingers through his hair, "What a mediocre cast you’ve set up, I applaud you president Lucas." He clapped, his laughter laced with scorn.
He headed for the elevator, but Lucas persisted, "Damien. I know that my past is concerning, but please, give this one chance-" he was saying, but got cut off by Sadie.
She reached for Damien’s wrist and stared him fiercely, "Hey, aren’t you supposed to be an actor?"
Damien’s lip twitched, "What was that?" He brushed off her grip, and stared right back at her.
Sadie kept her eyes on him, "You should know that rumours speculate all the time, what matters is how it’s handled. And right now, president Lucas is doing his best to let the rumours die naturally."
"So?" He wiped her touch off, "It’s naive thinking to believe that people won’t talk and that these rumours won’t affect the viewer rating. Accept you’ve made a mistake girlie and try next time." He advised, but Sadie stood her ground.
"Next time?" She took off her mask, "Must be easy for you to say, being a top actor and all. For people like me, we always have to fight for our roles. I’m not going to back down because of a rumour, if nobody believes in me, then I’ll make them, with my performance!" She spat out.
"Don’t be foolish! Do you think a no name actress like you can-"
"I’m past caring what people think! I just want to act, I don’t care if it’s the end of my career, they can do whatever they want to me, spread whatever rumours they want, but I want a performance, where I can act the way I want to." She took two steps closer, making him take a step back.
"And I’ll be damned if I let someone chickening out be the end of my career!"
Damien balled his fists, "Chickening out? It seems you have a misconception girlie. But if that’s how you feel, then let’s do it. Right now, let’s see the acting you’re so proud of." He challenged.
Sadie blinked twice, "What?"
Lucas stepped forward, "Damien, are you saying..."
Damien chimed, "If you can impress me, then I’ll play in this little failed project." He scoffed, "It’s not like this film is enough to shake my career." He turned to Sadie, and sent her a teasing grin, "It’s just like you said, I’m a top actor, you and I are not the same."
*Present*
Brooke stood next to the rest of the cast behind the glass, to watch Sadie and Damien run lines together. She didn’t know how it came to this, but apparently the entire production was suddenly resting on Sadie’s performance.
She had her fingers crossed, her heart pacing fast as Damien began running lines, acting out the scene.
’Please,’ she whispered to herself, ’Let Sadie do a good job.’ as she watched Sadie pick up the script and recite her lines...
The script reading didn’t take long, Damien raised his palm and brought it to an end after just two scenes. He called for the director and president to come with him so he could discuss and tell them his decision.
Whilst they waited, the rest of the cast swarmed around Sadie, asking her all sorts of questions.
"That was pretty good just now, where did you take lessons?"
"You were working at Cassie’s agency weren’t you? Is this because of some workshop?"
"Forget that! Is it true? Are you really sleeping with the president? Someone as talented as you?"
The compliments came from all angles, leaving the woman flustered. It was the first time people took an interest in her, and not the person in front of her.
"Um, I’m still just a rookie," she traced her gaze to Brooke, "There are some people whose acting can turn an entire room silent." She said.
Brooke gasped, was she talking about her audition?
Did Sadie somehow see it? Could it have been President Lucas’ doing? Was that why she came to the script reading?
Brooke had a thousand questions in her mind, but her thoughts were cut short when Damien arrived with the director and Lucas to make the announcement.
Everyone immediately seized their conversation and turned to them, eager to hear what they had to say. Sadie in particular kept her head held high, although she was sweating buckets under her pits.
The entire production was resting on her shoulders. She would be lying if it didn’t make her want to hurl. freёwebnoѵel.com
"We’ve talked it over and finally come to a conclusion." President Lucas announced, his gaze fixed on Sadie.
She pressed her lips firmly, ready for any disheartening news.
The director cleared his throat, "Damien," he called out to him, "I’d like to officially welcome you to the cast." He announced, erupting a frenzy of excitement from the rest of the cast.
Sadie let out a heavy sigh of relief. She turned to Brooke, who held the same expression, hell, she looked like she would cry at any moment.
"However," Damien announced, "There’s been a change in casting. I’ve decided that I’ll only play this role, with Sadie playing the female lead." He looked behind Sadie at Brooke, and reiterated what he just said, in case she had not heard it right.
"I will not act in this movie, if Brooke is the female lead."
