Chapter 90: Not Someone To Make An Enemy Out Of

"Mr Crane, you’re free to go." Announced the officer as she took off the cuffs on Luther’s wrists. He stared at his wrists then at his wife and daughter in disbelief.

Serena ran over to him and flung her arms around his neck, embracing him tightly, "Thank goodness you’re finally out! I was so scared." She sobbed into his shoulders.

Luther, half aware of his surroundings gently patted her head, then broke away, he turned to Cassie, who had a sharp smile about her. "Cassie, what’s going on?"

She mirrored her mother and hugged Luther, "Everything’s alright daddy, I’ve taken care of everything." She informed him.

"What do you mean by-" his question was cut short when she pulled away and signalled her mother to come over. She pulled her phone out of her purse and immediately started a live stream.

Although fazed, Luther managed to get through the live stream, and followed his family into the awaiting black vehicle outside. He narrowed his eyes at the security details that helped them ward off the reporters outside, wondering who exactly hired them.

It wasn’t until they were miles away from the station than he spoke up.

"Cassie, what is the meaning of this? Where is Ethan? I have to speak with him."

Cassie sighed and dropped her shoulders, "Ethan is gone."

"Gone?" Luther raised his brows.

She crossed her legs, and relaxed her chin on her balled fist, taking in the site of a disheveled Luther. It made her skin crawl to think he had to stay that long in prison. That she was too helpless to do anything to help him.

"That bastard turned his backs on us. So we’re doing the same to him father, he’ll regret double crossing us." She spat out, her tone venomous.

Luther alternated glances between his daughter and wife, both women had the same look of conviction in their eye, a look that made his stomach churn with uncertainty.

"Cassie," he breathed slowly, "How did you manage to get me out of prison?" He knew his daughter’s strengths and weaknesses, the former obviously outnumbering the latter.

But smarts, was not her strong suit.

Cassie cracked a broad grin, "You’ll never believe the deal I bagged in your absence daddy. In fact, you’ll be completely stunned once you hear what I did..."

"Brooke can’t be the female lead. That’s my condition to be in this movie." Damien reiterated.

In response to his announcement, Sadie spoke up, "What? No! Brooke earned this role, she blew all the judges away during her audition."

She recalled the video that was sent to her, and the conversation that she had with him. If it wasn’t for him, she wouldn’t have dared come to the script reading, he gave her a reason to act again.

Damien’s features flattened, "She has relations to the sponsors, that’s the bitter truth." He announced, erupting a series of murmuring from the cast around.

Brooke let out slow and heavy breaths as the air around her grew thinner. From the corner of her eye she saw the cast huddling together, speaking in low tones amongst themselves.

"Ugh!" Sadie groaned, she turned to the director, "Are you going to allow this?! Didn’t you all cast Brooke because she was the best fit? So why are you all being silent now? Say something!" She spat out angrily.

Director Flynn roughly massaged his temples, "This is not a discussion to be held in a place like this. All three of you, come with me. Now!" He ordered, then marched out of the room.

Naturally, Damien followed, Sadie looked over her shoulder at Brooke, who had turned pale and was drenched in beads of sweat. She let out a defeated sigh and went after Damien and the director, to set things right.

-"What a shameless woman! So she’s really sleeping with a sponsor?"

-"What could anyone expect? Women like her can only get by through social climbing."

-"If she has any ounce of shame, she’ll do as Damien says. At least, there can be some hope for this film."

Brooke’s eyes watered at their words, she kept her head down and followed in their direction, on her way out, she bumped into Lucas’s shoulder.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

Her pitch went high, "I’m sorry-" she covered her mouth and ran off, leaving a trail of tears behind her.

Lucas frowned and turned to the rest of the cast, "The script reading is dismissed until further notice." He announced, then went after the director and the rest of the actors.

Evelyn smiled at her bag, still reeling in the satisfaction of getting the designer bag for free. Her lips curled up at the thought of what other things she could manipulate Serena into doing with the video she had in her possession.

Now with Cassie being a hot cake online, any slight hiccup could be detrimental. Serena would be desperate, desperate not to be the one to bring her daughter down.

"Maybe I can-" her thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of her guest.

"Mrs Brown, thank you for meeting with me. My name is-"

Evelyn cut him off, "I don’t care what your name is. I only attended this meeting because the owner of my club is supposedly good friends with your boss. So cut the small talk and tell me what you want." She lashed out, setting her bag on the table.

Gilbert tipped his glasses up the bridge of his nose, "I see. Well then, let me be frank with you Mrs Brown. My employer wants your bag." He announced. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

Evenly widened her eyes, "What?!" She grabbed the bag off the table and hugged it to her chest. "The nerve! Just who the hell is this employer? Tell me!" She demanded.

"I cannot tell you her name, but she goes by the initial, B.G." he announced, picking up a briefcase from the floor of the restaurant. He laid it on the table, igniting Evelyn’s curiosity.

"But, I’ll give you some advice" Gilbert went on, "My boss is not someone to make an enemy out of."
