Devouring Dragon Heir-Chapter 42: Ch The Undead Cemetry 1
Chapter 42: Ch 42 The Undead Cemetry 1
Klaus returned to his hotel room.
He sat on the comfortable chair, leaning back, contemplating his next moves.
Tomorrow would be Sunday, the day he planned to enter the Undead Cemetery, the S-ranked darkness element dungeon,
his final target on his current list of dungeons. He knew he needed powerful summons for that dungeon, creatures capable of standing against S-rank undead and powerful dark mages.
Apart from the seven S-ranked bosses he already commanded, his other summoned monsters were merely A-ranked, which might not be enough to reliably clear an S-rank dungeon.
"System," Klaus thought, a new idea forming. "Can I fuse them? Can I fuse my summoned monsters to create stronger ones ?"
[That is not possible, Host.] the System replied, its robotic voice providing a direct, unambiguous answer.
"Is there any other way to make these summons stronger?" Klaus asked the System.
[Host, due to racial limitations, a monster cannot evolve normally except in special cases. If the host manages to unlock both his bloodline and physique, then it is possible for your summons to undergo a qualitative evolution] the System replied, its voice clear and direct.
"Well, there is time for that," Klaus said, acknowledging the System’s explanation.
Unlocking his Devouring Dragon Bloodline and Physique was a long-term goal, a process he knew would require immense resources.
"I guess I should focus on other things for now." His immediate priority was clearing this S-rank dungeon and securing the final elemental affinity on his current list.
Klaus looked at the night moon, a pale orb hanging in the sky outside his hotel window.
He went to bed shortly after that, his mind already shifting gears to plan ahead.
In his dreams, he again woke up on the same grassy hill.
This time, Julie, the little girl from his previous dream, met him.
Her face was bright with innocent joy.
She took his hand and led him to a crystal-clear river flowing at the base of the hill. They dipped their small feet into the cool, sparkling water, the sensation vividly real.
They then shared some sweet, ripe fruits, their juice dripping down their chins as they laughed, the pleasant sounds of cicadas filling the air.
The dream was peaceful, idyllic, and completely devoid of the violence and struggle that defined his waking life.
The next day, Klaus woke up refreshed, his body fully recovered from the accumulated fatigue of five days of non-stop dungeon grinding.
He blinked, the lingering warmth of the dream fading, and looked around his hotel room. He wondered about the recurring dream.
"Maybe my subconscious brain is hinting at something," he mused.
"Well, whatever." He shrugged off the thought, dismissing it as irrelevant. He had an S-rank dungeon to conquer.
He activated the Phantom Veil and Apex Velocity, rendering himself invisible and impossibly fast.
He traveled to the location of the Undead Cemetery gate, which took only a few minutes thanks to apex velocity.
As soon as he entered the massive, swirling portal, a cold, deathly aura immediately surrounded him.
It felt like an invisible entity was actively checking him out, probing his presence. He deactivated the Phantom Veil as he stepped fully into the dungeon.
The plain land around him was barren, desolate, and devoid of any living vegetation.
Overhead, a strange, dim, shadow-like sun hung in the sky, casting an eerie, perpetual twilight.
Klaus could not discern whether it was day or night in this realm; the light was constant, yet dim and oppressive.
He immediately activated Omniscient Tracking (SSS). A detailed, three-dimensional holographic map materialized directly in front of his eyes,
showing the barren terrain, trees, and crumbling structures of the Undead Cemetery.
On the map, he could see countless red markers, indicating hostile entities, rapidly approaching his direction from all sides.
S-rank and above gates were fundamentally different from the ranks below. These colossal gates typically housed not just one type of monster,
but multiple, diverse species, all serving a singular, powerful boss.
While the S-ranked monsters themselves usually spawned in smaller numbers due to their high mana requirements and inherent power,
they made up for that numerical disadvantage by commanding huge armies of different, lower-ranked monsters.
The higher the rank of the dungeon, the greater the organization of the monsters within, and the greater the sentience they held.
This was clearly evident in the coordinated movements of the approaching undead army.
Klaus looked at the vast army of undead, a silent, relentless tide of skeletal warriors and shambling horrors, traveling towards his location at a constant, unhurried speed.
Their movements were too coordinated, too precise, for mere instinct.
"The boss must have spotted me," Klaus concluded. His initial entry, even with Phantom Veil, must have triggered something.
To confirm this, Klaus activated the Phantom Veil again.
On his Omniscient Tracking map, the approaching, organized army of undead immediately stopped.
The red markers scattered in all directions, their coordinated movement dissolving into confusion. The boss had clearly lost sight of him.
Looking at the scattered monsters on his map, Klaus issued an instruction to the System.
"Notify me when my shadow affinity stops increasing by killing these monsters."
He intended to absorb every single undead creature until his affinity reached its saturation point for this dungeon.
[Affirmative.] the System replied.
After that, Klaus deactivated the Phantom Veil.
He took out Lost Echo, his primary sword, from his storage and also summoned almost all the monsters he had kept in reserves.
He excluded his Ice Golems since they were too weak to be effective against S-rank undead and would only serve as fodder without significant contribution.
The summoned monsters consisted of:
Orcs (from Orc Haven)
Lizard Men (from Lizard Men dungeon)
Swamp Pythons (from Swamp Python Cave)
Fiery Goblins (from Fiery Goblin dungeon)
Lava Hounds (from Lava Hounds dungeon)
Blazing Claws (from Blazing Claw dungeon)
And formidable Yeti monsters along with their S-ranked bosses.
The total number of his summoned army crossed the 5,000 threshold, a significant number capable of overwhelming most conventional forces.
The scattered undead, sensing his reappearance, immediately started arranging themselves again into an organized army and marched relentlessly towards him, their skeletal forms clattering.
Klaus simply stood there, observing the approaching horde.
Soon, a huge, imposing throne, crafted from a combination of solid ice, rough earth, and a few parts blazing with fiery mana, erupted from the barren ground before him.
Klaus silently sat on the huge throne, Lost Echo resting casually by his side.
He looked like a monarch, a powerful ruler, radiating an aura of immense, controlled power.
His vast, diverse army stood ready for battle, arrayed before him.
Soon, a deathly aura, cold and oppressive, spread across the entire battlefield.
Klaus spotted the vanguard of the enemy: a massive army of Death Knights and countless undead skeletons, led by imposing knights mounted on skeletal horses.
These were the S-ranked monsters he had anticipated.
Klaus looked at the Death Knight in the lead. It was an S-ranked monster, clearly stronger than its aides, which were of the same rank but possessed less power.
Despite its formidable presence, Klaus didn’t make any direct moves yet. He issued a mental command to his seven S-rank boss monster summons, ordering them to initiate the attack.
[Ding!! Tribe Leader is activating!!] The System chimed,
-----------------
TRAIT: TRIBE LEADER (A) While in battle, the leader exudes a commanding aura, creating powerful synergy among subordinates on the battlefield. This boosts their morale, coordination, and individual combat effectiveness.
----------------
Klaus looked at the battle from a distance, watching as his summoned army clashed with the undead horde.
The different elemental monsters, usually disparate and uncooperative, were now supporting each other through combined attacks, a direct result of the Tribe Leader trait.
He could see the earth elementals using their earth-based skills to enhance the defense of the troops, raising temporary earthen bulwarks and creating difficult terrain for the undead.
Meanwhile, the Yetis used their various ice skills to slow down and inflict frost damage on the enemy.
The fire monsters, particularly the Fiery Goblins and Lava Hounds, focused entirely on offense, unleashing torrents of flames and explosive attacks.
This newfound partnership was not just limited to his normal summoned monsters; the S-rank boss monsters too moved in coordinated groups of two, complementing each other’s abilities.
His boss monsters were completely overwhelming them, their combined might far exceeding that of individual Death Knights.
The only real problem was the stronger, S-ranked Death Knight, the general of the undead army.
It was charging through the battlefield like an unstoppable, dark tide, cleaving through summoned forces , its aura of death chilling everything it touched.
It was making a direct path towards Klaus.
Klaus decided to intervene. He activated his Crystal Garden (S) skill, aiming it directly in the path of the charging undead general.
Simultaneously, he activated Cunning Conflagration (S), a skill absorbed from the Fiery Goblin King, to create a complex network of flame geysers and hidden tripwires across the arena, specifically designed to ensnare and damage the advancing S-rank Death Knight.
These traps activated unpredictably, launching jets of superheated plasma or ensnaring targets in flaming nets, inflicting continuous burns and rooting effects.
The boss undead general found itself with nowhere to escape.
It was caught between the sheer, suffocating temperature of the flame traps and the razor-sharp ice crystals suddenly sprouting out of nowhere, disrupting its movements and impaling its skeletal steed.
The combination of fire and ice, a chaotic yet effective synergy, disoriented and damaged the powerful Death Knight.
As the battle flared into a full-scale war, Klaus summoned his four thousand-strong Golem troop.
He gave them one simple, crucial task: to collect the corpses of all dead monsters, specifically the vanquished undead, and make a massive pile.
The Golem troop, although individually weak in direct combat, proved exceptionally good for such laborious tasks.
With their sheer numbers, a strong, efficient network of golems was created, making the corpse collection very efficient.
Although some remaining undead tried to intervene and stop the collection, they were swiftly dealt with by Klaus’s other, more powerful summoned monsters, ensuring the golems could continue their work unimpeded.
"It seems the synergy of the Tribe Leader trait worked on these golems too," Klaus mused, observing their surprisingly coordinated efforts in corpse collection.

SKILL: Cunning Conflagration (S)
This skill unleashes the Fiery Goblin King’s twisted genius, weaponizing chaotic fire and overwhelming numbers with surprising tactical depth.
EFFECTS:
Volatile Swarm Summon: Summons a relentless horde of Explosive Goblins (A-rank minions) that aggressively charge enemies. Each goblin detonates upon contact or death, dealing substantial AoE fire damage and leaving behind lingering pools of scorching naphtha that slow movement.
Inferno Trap Network: The boss can instantly create a hidden, intricate network of flame geysers and tripwires across the arena. These traps activate unpredictably, launching jets of superheated plasma or ensnaring targets in flaming nets, inflicting continuous burns and rooting effects.
Arcane Immolation: Targets affected by "Volatile Swarm" or "Inferno Trap Network" accumulate stacks of "Immolation." Upon reaching a critical number of stacks, the boss can activate "Arcane Immolation," causing all affected enemies to spontaneously combust, taking massive burst fire damage that bypasses armor and spreads to nearby allies.
