Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 22: Two Against Six
Chapter 22 - Two Against Six
The once beautiful white snow had been desecrated, all around them red stains and puddles of warm blood had begun to melt the snow, revealing the floor underneath.
It was a horrid sight, bodies were strewn all over the battlefield, with varying degrees of injuries left to tell the tales of their demise.
It was to be expected, after all, a flawless victory was a thing only thought up in dreams and fantasies by those who did not have the heart to watch people suffer.
Surrounded by the stench of death two people remained, Ark and Kiera. But they were in a precarious position, six knights had survived the ordeal as well and were now slowly surrounding them at all sides.
Kiera held onto her sword, her eyes shifting between the men. They were currently standing back to back, slowly moving around in case any of the knights were to strike.
Ark felt Kiera's muscles tense up just before she spoke:
"Stay close to me."
And then she lunged at the first knight, their swords sending sparks as they collided. The more bulky knight battered her blade to the side, he raised his blade high up to cleave her skull while another knight by the side was stabbing forward.
Moving with outstanding flexibility, Kiera managed to evade both attacks before lashing out at them once more.
Ark was not idle either, while Kiera faced off three of the knights, he was left with three himself.
They were laughing as they got closer to him, one of them had a longsword, the other had a battle axe while the last man bore a long spear.
"What? Didn't you kill a beast? Show us what you can do!"
They snickered amongst themselves just before the spear guy rushed forward.
Ark sidestepped his charge, avoiding the sharp tip and held onto the shaft.
The man tried to pull the spear free only to be left astonished by how firm his grip was.
He pulled once more but the spear did not budge and then his eyes widened as the spear tip was suddenly broken off the wood.
Before the others could react, Ark sent it flying, the spearhead whistling through the air like an arrow.
Blood exploded forward, staining steel armour as the knight's head rocked backward, leaving the other two knights with varying degrees of shock and anger.
"Bastard!"
The knight with the axe spun it around to gain momentum causing Ark to jump backward, that was because it was a very unorthodox method of using an axe, at least that was what he thought—
Until the axe was sent flying.
Clang!
The axe crashed into Ark's hammer, knocking his hands backward. If he had been a second late, the axe would have taken off his head.
The last knight took advantage of the monetary distraction, closing the space between them within seconds and striking Ark in the gut with his knee.
The latter held firm, swinging his hammer at the man's head but he had already retreated to a safe distance.
He unsheated his blade and they both met at the center.
'Tense and swung...'
Ark repeated these words in his ear as he slammed his hammer into the knight's sword. The man's hand rattled, threatening to lose his blade but he could not take advantage of it.
Because the man with the axe hand retrieved his axe and was now making good use of it, swinging in wide vicious arcs.
The only thing Ark could see through the visor of his helmet were his eyes which were mad with blood lust.
He swung the axe around like it weighed little, his body trodding through the snow with ease.
With no training whatsoever keeping up with the man was proving to be difficult. He had only managed to kill the first man due to the element of surprise, but now that he had no such tricks he was steadily getting pushed back.
Ark swung his hammer straight at the man's chest only to have his hammer batted to the side by the lighter and more maneuverable axe.
A mighty kick to the chest sent him to the floor and he was about to be cut down when they heard an audible scream.
The man turned around just to see his companion fall to his knees. Kiera had finished off the other knights and had come to assist Ark.
'So that was why he was no longer attacking me...'
Still, Ark was faced with an opportunity, his opponent had underestimated him by looking away in the middle of a fight.
Within seconds, just as the man was about to turn back to the task at hand, Ark sent his hammer flying.
Like a divine instrument, the heavy weapon left Ark's hands and crashed into the knight's helmet, bashing right into his skull.
The burly man fell to a knee, right before plummeting into the snow.
Ark remained on the floor catching his breath, but he could not do so for long, there was still one person left.
"The Usurper."
His hammer had flown far away so Ark picked up the axe instead.
He then rose to his feet, scanning the area around him. For whatever reason, he could not find the lord.
That was when Kiera jogged towards him, looking rather shaken.
"We have a problem."
Ark had watched Kiera starve in a cave, going for days without food and water, he had seen her dragged on a path of shame when she was accused of killing the lord.
And yet not once had he seen her worry.
But now she looked far more than worried, she looked terrified.
Ark followed the girl, who led him towards the entrance of the usurper's makeshift fortress.
Lying on the floor, with a spear embedded in his gut was none other than the usurper. It seemed he had been killed at some point in the battle.

"I don't see the problem," Ark remarked as he watched the man's corpse.
His death only meant they didn't have to kill him themselves.
Kiera held onto his shoulder and shook him violently.
"If he's dead. Then why isn't the trial complete?"
Ark watched her for a second looking slightly confused, and then his heart skipped.
Just then, a thunderous roar that sounded very similar to a wail reverberated across the entire area.
It was then Ark finally realized their mistake. This was Kiera's trial after all.
"Kiera... what do you fear the most?"
His eyes were wide with panic as cold sweat dripped down his forehead, his grip on her shoulders almost too firm.
Kiera seemed to hesitate a little, revealing your fears was like revealing your weakness. And yet it was far too important to their current situation
When she opened her mouth, Ark's heart dropped.
"My fear— is impossible situations."
The ground rumbled as the snow seemed to part, it was as though something was crawling underneath the thick layer of snow and dirt revealing only pristine white fur.
And then a few meters away from them a colossal figure sprung forth from underneath the dirt.
The creature stood at an impressive twelve feet tall, and its features were strikingly familiar. It was enough to make Ark take a cautious step back.
That was because this creature was a snow beast like the one he had fought, only far more sinister.
An aggrieved mother.
