Chapter 603: Chapter 602: A Clearheaded Person
"Oh? They were let in?"
At the Ping Family residence, Madam Ping reclined on a daybed, leaning at an angle as she listened to the report from the maidservant by her side. Her eyebrows arched slightly, somewhat puzzled by Wufu’s intentions.
"Mother, if Wufu can show kindness to a beggar, then if those men really were her uncles and the like, how could she truly ignore them?" Ping Caier said.
Madam Ping sighed upon hearing this and, looking at her daughter’s gentle face, said, "Silly child, you only see the surface of things, which is far too one-sided. What will you do in the future?"
Ping Caier furrowed her delicate brows, somewhat confused.
Seeing this only increased Madam Ping’s concern. Her daughter’s future husband’s family was also thriving with many people. With such a temperament, if she didn’t think things through more, wouldn’t she be easily taken advantage of?
"Didn’t you hear that when her uncle cursed at her, she had the maidservant slap him?" Madam Ping sighed. "If she truly acknowledged this uncle from her heart, she would not have subjected him to such humiliation, especially not outside her own home, disregarding each other’s reputation."
Ping Caier was taken aback, having not considered this aspect.
"I was already wondering why they acted as they did, but now it seems that I understand. There must be something unknown to others going on inside," Madam Ping sighed. Just because of that man’s rude term ’little wretch,’ the issue couldn’t be settled; and yet he was her uncle, and he cursed in such a manner.
"What does Mother mean?"
Madam Ping looked at her daughter, intent on teaching her: "Caicai, has your own uncle ever cursed at you like that?"
Ping Caier shook her head.
"That’s just it. Even if there’s some issue, a legitimate uncle would never curse at his niece like that. Yet that man did, and if it were you, could you honestly endure it? Wufu can even show kindness to beggars, which shows she is not bad at heart. So why would she stop her uncle?"
Ping Caier pursed her lips slightly, analyzing her mother’s words. After a while, she said, "Mother means that there are disputes between them?"
Madam Ping nodded, took a sip of tea, and said, "Every effect has its cause. This Lunar New Year, Mrs. Zhou didn’t even go back to her parental home to celebrate! What could make a married daughter not visit her own family? It would be one thing if the journey were long, but it’s not even a day’s travel to their old home."
Ping Caier said, "It seems the daughter has been too narrow-minded."
"Caicai, human nature is most unpredictable; don’t just look at the surface. For every matter, you must break it down and scrutinize the details. Only then will it benefit you, and you won’t be easily deceived in the future," Madam Ping said, looking at her with affection.
"It’s the daughter who has caused Mother concern," Ping Caier said, her face showing embarrassment. "Mother, then tell me, is Wufu good or bad? Is she worth forming a close friendship with?"
Madam Ping held her tea and slowly sipped, pondering for a while before saying, "That child, she’s clearer-headed than her mother and has a scale in her heart for what’s right and wrong. She’s a sensible person. If you could become good friends with her, that would be beneficial for you, too."
Ping Caier broke into a smile. "I understand, Mother."
Madam Ping smiled faintly, yet there was a hint of worry in her eyes. She feared that even if she wanted to form a close relationship, the other party might not reciprocate with her daughter. Their temperaments were truly at odds; that child was too dazzling.
However, considering her daughter would marry in two years and hadn’t made many close friends since returning here, she thought, gaining one more friend is better than none. She wouldn’t stay for many years anyway, so letting her relax a bit was also good.
Before long, another maidservant hurried in to report that the Wu Family had a visit from a Yamen Runner.
Ping Caier looked confused while Madam Ping sat up straight with a hint of shock in her eyes. Could this be the reason Wufu let those men into the house?
