Chapter 686: Chapter 685: Dare Not Underestimate
Madam Zhou’s words swiftly reached Wufu’s ears, and by evening, she had arrived at the main house to join Madam Zhou for dinner.
"I thought you would be so busy with that carving that you’d even take your meals in the study," said Madam Zhou with a smile, pulling her to sit down.
Wufu replied, "I can still make time to join Mother for dinner."
As the mother and daughter sat at the dining table, although their life was comfortable now, Madam Zhou was still frugal. Their usual meals consisted of four dishes and one soup, but they were prepared with more refinement.
Eating without speaking, speaking without sleeping, was not a principle Wufu adhered to; Madam Zhou had also become accustomed to her talking, so the two of them always chatted while they ate.
"I thought you would be dining with Zhou Xueli tonight," Wufu said with a smile.
Madam Zhou paused, then answered, "No."
Wufu looked at her.
Madam Zhou forced a smile and said, "He came because of the Lu Family, and I’m afraid I’d be unable to refuse him."
Wufu said, "Mother, I’m truly happy that while you care for them, you still put me first."
Madam Zhou was a traditional ancient woman, educated here. She was different from Wufu, who, in her previous life, had been an orphan without the need for family affection.
But for Madam Zhou, it was different; she needed and valued these ties. Zhou Xueli was only seventeen or eighteen this year, so much younger than her, and probably someone she had watched grow up since he was little, like a son to her.
Yet, even so, she could still prioritize her own wishes and not go against her will.
"Silly girl, you are my daughter. The only one I can rely on is you; naturally, you are my utmost priority," said Madam Zhou with a smile.
Wufu picked up a piece of braised carp for her mother’s bowl, feeling pleased.
"Your young uncle mentioned that the old lady has been ill," continued Madam Zhou. "Members of the Lu Family have also come to visit twice but were scolded away by the old lady."
Wufu smiled without a word.
Seeing that she had no interest in continuing the topic, Madam Zhou stopped there.
After dinner, Wufu returned to her room. After some thought, she proceeded to the guest rooms in the front courtyard.
Zhou Xueli was sitting idly in the guest room. When he heard Wufu had come, he stood up in surprise.
Compared to seeing Madam Zhou, he was even more fearful of encountering Wufu. This fifteen-year-old girl unsettled him and evoked fear from the depths of his heart.
Just like now, the girl was dressed in much simpler clothes than her mother, even wearing coarse cloth garments. Yet her imposing demeanor was unmistakable, unmasked even by the plainness of her attire.
"Wufu, you’ve come," stammered Zhou Xueli, fidgeting with the hem of his garment.
"Sit," Wufu said with a smile, gesturing toward a chair.
Zhou Xueli sat down, swallowed hard, and said, "Wufu, rest assured, I will leave tomorrow."
Wufu observed him, looking like a frightened little bird, evidently terrified of her, and thought to herself that indeed, her actions had instilled fear.
But that was good—it meant no one would dare underestimate her.
"As for the matter with Zhou Xuennian, you don’t need to plead with my mother anymore. The Government Office will be operational in a few days, and once the Lord County Magistrate has reviewed it, he will naturally be released. There’s no threat to his life; you can be at ease," Wufu said.
This meant she had no intention of releasing the prisoner early. Zhou Xueli’s smile stiffened, and he nodded in acknowledgment.
"While they’re in jail, without their freedom, they can’t cause trouble. But once they’re out, it’s different. I want to ask, what are your plans? If they cause trouble again, what will you do?" Wufu asked. "Surely you can’t keep cleaning up after them time after time, right?"
Zhou Xueli’s face changed subtly, and he delayed responding. Indeed, what would they do if it happened again?
