DRAGONBORN SORCERER-Chapter 55: The Mock Battle [Pt—1]: Unexpected
A week passed by with various assignments and other class works. They forgot the entire labyrinth thing. Neither did they bothered informing their professor about the demon they faced during then.
Everything seemed normal. Maya and her friends trained as usual, while Skyler kept himself busy with Professor Arnol to make some plans for the tournament.
While on the other hand, Frey kept mastering spells that were way out of her league. She was desperate. Unlike others, she took her priorities seriously. Though her actual intentions remained unknown.
Until one day a sudden commotion occurred in the Mystic Scholar section. When the students from the Honoured Ones went to see what happened, they were astonished.
Frey Arthur, despite being only a stage-1 mage and wilder of only light, somehow managed to defeat Alex Denver— one of the Mystic Scholars.
And now she’d participate in the tournament instead of Alex.
"I can’t believe what I’m seeing." Emily murmured in disbelief, "How in the world did she manage to defeat him?"
"I’m stunned too." Maya replied, glancing at Frey who was still covered in dust, "Now that she acquired the seat, she’ll face off in the tournament. What a surprise."
’That’s interesting,’ Skyler chuckled while speaking to himself, ’Now that she has defeated one of the higher students, I’ll be less suspicious when I do the same. Question is, should I challenge them today or later?’
The fight was fair and square. However, some of the Mystic Scholar students implied that she had cheated.
"Professor!" one of them screamed, "Inspect her thoroughly. She might be hiding something."
"Yeah," her classmate added, "There’s no way that she can beat one of us. There has to be something behind it."
Their professor, a middle age man with blonde hair and blue eyes, looked suspiciously at Frey. But he knew there wasn’t anything that she used to cheat. He tried to take Frey’s side, but before he could speak something, Skyler voice cut through them like a sharp blade.
"Stop being whiny-babies." He smirked, snatching their attentions, "Just because you lost to someone, doesn’t mean they have cheated." He stepped forwards and continued, "The result is clear, Frey won the battle. You should just shut up and accept it that he was weaker."
"Huh?" The student exasperated, "Do you think we, the Mystic Scholars, are weaker than her?"
"Do you still need to ask." Skyler sniggered, "Can’t you see that. Or do you need me to defeat one of you?"
His statement flamed their anger more. Their ego got hurt just as he predicated. Soon their frustration shifted at Skyler.
"You think you can defeat one of us." The girl roared.
"Want to give it a try..." Skyler said, infuriating her anger, "If I win I’ll take your seat for participating in the tournament."
A shocking impression shrouded everyone’s face. Frey already anticipated that Skyler might be after the tournament. Her intuitions were correct.
But not the others. Maya immediately tried to stop him while she had the chance.
"Hay, Skyler," she called out, pulling his hands, "Don’t get carried away. Fighting them is no good. It’ll only bring disgrace upon you."
"Don’t worry Maya." Skyler replied, still smirking at the girl who was looking at him angrily, "It’ll not bring any harm on my dignity. I’ll be fine."
The commotion not only snatch Professor Misha’s attention, in fact Professor Arnol appeared too. He had his own business, though had no intention of revealing it.
"So you’re going, eh?" Arnol said, standing next to Skyler, "You’d better win."
"Professor Arnol!" Professor Misha screamed, "Why’re you encouraging him? You should be stopping him. Fighting against the Mystic Scholar is way out of his league."
"Wasn’t it same for Frey Arthur?" Arnol looked at her with his piercing gaze, "She managed to defeat one of them, Skyler will too. I have faith in him."
"But Professor, " The Professor of the Mystic Scholar asked this time, "I think it’s already enough. We should stop them."
"Professor Andrew." Said Arnol, "Don’t worry. Seeking one’s worth by battling the superiors, has always been this academy’s way of finding the gems, and it’s legit. They’re allowed to challenge whoever they want."
"But if Skyler is going for the Participant’s seat, he needs to gamble something equivalent to it." Professor Andrew said, "I hope he knows that. But does he have anything of that value?"
"Of course I have." Skyler smirked, "But let me see the one who’ll gamble their seat."
"Then I shall be the one to take you one." The girl forwarded, her face still bearing the infuriation— the disgrace they felt loosing to Frey. "I am Zara Hartman. Remember it Transferred Student for it shall be I to show your actual worth."
The girls brown hair waved as her black eyes shined in anger. She was confident that she could take on Skyler easily.
"Very well." Skyler smiled and the system inventory opened. Getting an item from there, he continued, "If you manage to defeat me, I’ll give you my Sandrium Orb."
The world around him fell silent. Nothing but the wind passing them only made a low sound. They stood still— even the Professors and every students.
Not in their life they had witnessed Sandrium; at least most of them. Seeing it on Skyler’s possession, only raised their suspicion that he might be lying.
"Preposterous!" Zara remarked, "First she cheated, and now you’re lying? How pathetic! I never imagined you guys to play this dirty."
Her other companions sniggered, as though making fun of the Honoured ones. Yet, Skyler remained calm. What he had was real, so there was no point in arguing.
"You’re free to check whether it’s real or fake." He replied, "If it happens to be the real deal, will you accept the challenge?"
"There’s no point in checking." Arnol murmured. He was shocked like everyone else. But keeping his curiosity aside, he continued, "That orb is real. And I can assure that."
"For real?" Professor Misha was stunned as she interjected, "But how did he manage to acquire one? Sandrium are so rare to find. In fact it’s a legendary metal."
"He might have stolen from somewhere." Zara added, accusing him of thievery, "How else can he get one?"
Skyler chuckled faintly as if creating a tension in the atmosphere. Holding the shiny golden metal orb in his hand he replied.
"Have you ever hear of the White Serpent?"
"You mean one of those legendary beasts that appears every once in a while?"
"While I was in Rosevill, I completely annihilated the horde of Black serpents." He continued, "Among them was the white serpent who had this, on the end of its tail. I receive this as a quest completion reward for killing it."
"You’ve gotta be kidding me." She stammered, "There’s no way you can defeat those beast on your own. Yes. That’s it. You’re fabricating stories that never happened."
Skyler sighed in exasperation. No matter what he said, she wasn’t convinced enough to believe it. Seeing no other way out he decided to add evidence.
"Is this enough." He said, dropping the remaining fangs of black serpents that he wished to sell but got no opportunity. He also held the different pair of fangs that belong to the white serpent. "This is the items I received back then. If you still don’t believe me, that’s your problem."
He collected the items back in his inventory.
Zara and her classmates were annoyingly shocked. They couldn’t believe Skyler had something like that. They got no option but to believe.
"If you say so, then I guess you’re not lying." She replied, "Very well. I accept your challenge."
*********
Soon after that, the class divided into two portion. The first who supported Zara— the Mystic Scholar, and the second who supported Skyler— the Honoured ones.
The three professors acted as the judges while Skyler and Zara took their position to fight.
’What a joke!’ Arnol thought, ’This battle is totally one sided. Zara is a wielder of Fire, Wind and Ice. If she uses Fire Skyler can counter that. And speaking of her other abilities, I don’t think Skyler has much to worry.’
He smirked, glancing at the battler which was about to start.
"Skyler was it." Zara muttered, stretching her hands for pre-battle excursive, "Let me warn you though. I am a stage-9 mage. My attacks are not as puny as you’ve seen before."
"Don’t worry about me." Skyler replied, "Just don’t hold any grudge against me while fighting."
"I fight with dignity. I don’t use any underhanded tactics like others." She exhaled, preparing for the mark for the battle to start.
"Like wise." Skyler replied, glancing at his stats on the System interface which just popped out before him, "I never uses underhanded tactics too."
"Students, prepare!" Misha announced, "Fight!"
Zara smiled, albeit rather ferociously, her eyes gazing at Skyler sinisterly. It was hard to count just how many magic circle she summoned— each containing either wind attacks or ice attacks.
None of them were fire based. She had seen him how he was capable of deflecting flams. So she avoided using that.
The attacks were intense. She was stage-9 for nothing. Her spells might even similar to Skyler’s own.
They closed in, surrounding Skyler form every direction, leaving him no openings. He was about to take head on.
At the very moment the System Interface informed him a new notification.
