Chapter 57: Thr Afterwards & Consequences

It was quite unexpected how easily Skyler acquired the ’Participant’s Position’ for the tournament.

Professor Misha and the rest of the Honoured Ones were thrilled to have two students participating in the tournament. They were excited, but they were also worried that they would face high-ranking students.

Meanwhile, the Mystic Scholars were upset. They blamed Frey for being a cheater. In the end, they ended up being one. Not only did they face defeat, but they also bore the consequences of Zara’s dirty performance.

Yet few of them were motivated instead of feeling disgraceful. Among them were Adler Lowery and Rowan Leach.

They were the most competent in fighting after Zara. They both wielded single grace and were stage 9.

Adler wielded ’Grace of Aqua’ while Rowan wielded ’Grace of Fire’. Despite having a stage down from the Aspiring Sovereigns, they held almost equal ground. Zara and Alex’s defeat were nothing but lessons to them.

Back at the principal’s office.

A middle-aged man with blonde hair and blue eyes appeared to be having trouble after reading a letter from one of the sovereigns. His secretary, a young lady with long black hair and purple eyes, stood beside him.

She was wearing the same dress as any other professor in the academy. Seeing the paled expression on the principal’s face, she couldn’t help but wonder.

"Sir," she said softly, "You seem to be having trouble. Is there something that matters?"

The principal sighed, took a long breath, and looked at her.

"I reported the victory of Frey Arthur and the Transferred Student, Skyler to the sovereigns." He replied, "As it appears, they aren’t pleased to hear that."

"Why’s that?"

"According to them, Skyler is intervening with our natural order in El Niora. They don’t want him intervening with our business. Since he got officially accepted into the tournaments, he might become a hindrance."

"So they want to get rid of him?" Margret— the personal secretary, questioned.

"Yes," he replied, "In fact, they want to exile him out of this country as soon as possible. But they don’t have any valid reason for that. And for the same reason, they set up some new rules for the tournament."

"What kind of?"

"They’re allowing students to use anything just to win against him. Whether it’s Hartman’s Sync ability or other underhanded tricks— they’re allowing everything."

"That seems rough!"

"It is." The principal sighed, "Though I wonder why take such steps towards a transferred student. He hasn’t done something wrong."

"Maybe there’s more to it."

"Perhaps." He replied, standing up from his office chair, "For the time being, issue a notice regarding the new rules of the tournament. I’ll go and check out something else."

"Yes, Sir." She nodded as she watched the principal leaving the office.

At the Honoured Ones Dormitory.

Skyler was checking up on his stats and attributes. He didn’t get enough time to level up his skills. He already had acquired an ascension card but wasn’t sure which active skill to upgrade for the time being.

[Active Skill: Element Lord (Lv 4)]

[Active Skill: Dark Amplifier (Lv 2)]

The system panel showed him the skill and Skyler lost in deep thought.

’Element Lord is already level 4, and the MP cost has been reduced.’ He thought deeply, ’Dark Amplifier sure gives me a lot of advantages but it drains more MP. In the tournament, I might face a strong opponent, and Dark Amplifier might get handy. But I think I shouldn’t use that skill too much. People will suspect me.’

After a deep breath, he finally decided which skill to upgrade.

"Upgrade Element Lord."

[Success!]

[Active Skill: Element Lord (Lv 5)]

[Notice: Additional effects have been applied. MP cost has been reduced by 20%]

"That’s a lot." Skyler whispered to himself, seeing the new notification windows "I think this should be enough to counter whoever stands against me."

He intended to smile but a sudden thought snatched his smile away. He looked concerned.

"If I win the tournament, I’ll be forced to become the light sorcerer." His eyebrows twinkled, "If I accept that, all of my graces will be overwritten by the Grace of Photon. Furthermore, it might even be impossible to leave this country."

[Notice: Sorcerer Level ’Grace Of Photon’ can be used to gain full access to Light Element Skill. It will not affect your other skills]

"For real?" Skyler almost jumped in excitement, but soon the smile faded away from his face. "But it doesn’t ensure my freedom. Well, it doesn’t matter. I’ll flee using Arnol, leaving this country at its fate. It’s not my problem to look at the aftermaths."

He chuckled, getting a small relief from thinking about that. But it wasn’t the end of his thoughts.

He laid on the bed. Feeling the softness, he went back to thinking.

The most concerning thought that occurred to him, was Frey Arthur and Zara Hartman.

As Arnol Viser told him during their battle, Hartman’s twin was an anomaly among the mages. Those twins were in the same stage and could lend their powers to each other.

However, Zara showed her dirty side back during the tournament. But Zoya was a little different.

She might have shown blood lust toward Skyler and her intent was so immense the system alerted him.

"Still though, why did she have that kind of intent to begin with?" he wondered, thinking about Zoya who faced the Dragan’s Wrath but still stood instead of getting broken.

"She may become a problem if she becomes my opponent next time."

Murmuring that his thoughts shifted to Frey— the Stage-1 mage who defeated a Stage-8 mage.

"It doesn’t seem right."

He didn’t witness her fight during the battle either. But what he knew about her was the informative mind she had.

It didn’t take her long to identify the demon. And the way she fought the shadow demons was remarkable. But it wasn’t that great that she could defeat a stage-8 mage.

"Either the mage was pretty weak or she might have... no, she looks honest. I don’t think she cheated."

But he couldn’t look the other way. The possibilities were slim, but not undeniable. However, assumptions didn’t lead him anywhere. It only gave him unsolved doubts.

Just when Skyler thought of having a small nap before dinner, the door of his room was slammed open.

It almost panicked him. To take precautions, he unleashed his thunder arrows and almost hit Maya who was there to call him.

Seeing Skyler’s attacks, she felt a heart attack as she cried out loud.

"Jeez! Skyler, what’s wrong with you." she yelled, getting a hold of herself, "We’re inside the dormitory. There’s no one coming to attack you. So stop freaking us out each time we come to call you."

"Oh, Maya, it’s you again." Skyler dismantled his attack, "Sorry if that scared you. I didn’t intend to. This is just the way I am."

He was still new to this country. Besides, he didn’t trust anyone. That was the reason why he always kept his guard up.

’Because when I let my guard down last time,’ Skyler thought, letting a sigh, ’A crazy bitch sliced my heart out of my body.’

But it wasn’t time for remembering that. He looked at Maya who was looking at him angrily for throwing the attack. He, however, didn’t give it much attention and stood up.

"If you’re here, that means the dinner is prepared?" he asked, stepping towards her.

"Why of course it’s ready." She still yelled, standing at the doorway, "Why else would I bother to come here? Now hurry up and come to the dining table. Everyone’s waiting."

She left.

Skyler took a deep breath and started following her.

As he joined with others in the dining, he was quite surprised by all the fancy decorations of various foods. Not only did they look delicious, but they were also exquisite and unimaginably alluring.

Emily was even drooling but held herself as everyone took their seats. Others were excited as well. Only Skyler remained stunned to see the sudden change of decoration.

"Excuse me, Miss Carla," he asked, "What’s with this food? Is this another banquet?"

"That’s one way to see it." She replied softly as usual, "This is for you and Fray’s achievement. We heard that you two defeated two of the Mystic Scholars and now both of you will participate in the tournament. I thought you might need some encouragement. As a consequence, I got a little carried away."

"A little, huh?" Skyler wondered, taking his seat.

"Oh come on." Julian screamed at Skyler with irritation, "Don’t complain, buddy. Just enjoy the flavors. They look so yummy!"

"He’s right," Maya continued, "If you’ve got any problem, you can give your share to me. I don’t mind. Hee-hee."

"Shut up." Skyler yelled, hiding his embarrassment as he flustered a little, "I didn’t say I don’t need it. I was just surprised to see it, that’s all."

His gaze shifted to Carla who was standing next to them. Seeing how much effort she had put into making all the food, he exclaimed, "Miss Carla, I appreciate all this, and thanks for the encouragement."

Taking a small portion of the roasted meat, he began to savor the magnificent flavor. While eating, he looked Fray.

She was as quiet as ever— just enjoying all to herself.
