Dungeon King: The Hidden Ruler-Chapter 112: [Throne War: Parallax Protocol 3] Fall of the Outer Wall
Chapter 112: [Throne War: Parallax Protocol 3] Fall of the Outer Wall
They called it the Siege Beast of Barkbone, but it looked more like a walking termite mound armored in deadwood and old bones. Its tusks curved like siege pikes, and moss dripped from its armored shell as it pushed toward the southern flank.
From a second-level archway, Raven reloaded his ballista—Duskrunner crouched low beside him, eyes locked forward, silent as instructed.
Two other players manned the oil cauldrons above—mis-timed the first pour. Flames missed. Barkbone didn’t flinch. It stepped through the fire.
The wall shuddered. Its tusks slammed into the stone base beneath the tower.
A necromancer stood just below—tagged as [Morivel_Toll]. Cloaked in dark crimson boneweave, he raised a skeletal bulwark in a desperate effort to delay the beast. A dozen summoned horrors surged forward, clawing at Barkbone’s limbs.
It didn’t matter.
Barkbone roared and swept its tusks sideways. The entire necromantic wall collapsed, and Morivel’s summons blinked out in a burst of failed commands. He tried to retreat—barely cast a spectral tether—before Barkbone’s shoulder crashed through the platform, burying him in stone.
No death fanfare. Just a cracked health bar fading to zero and a white glow where his body had been.
Wall Sector 2: Breached. Flame Aura Deactivated.
"Fairyblade, left arch," Raven called without turning.
She was already repositioning. Her ballista clicked into place, aimed lower. "Got it. I’ll suppress front line. You cover the rear gate."
To Raven, she was just another PvE support paladin—sharp, quiet, oddly focused. Nothing about her stood out except the way she stayed composed under fire and didn’t waste words. He didn’t know her name beyond ’Fairyblade,’ and she didn’t ask his either.
Just two strangers playing their roles in a warzone.
And now, Elara was watching.
Not him. Not even Barkbone.
She was watching how people responded to Parallax Vanguard’s presence.
The breach erupted in a thunderous blast, and Cindraleth forces flooded in. Spore hounds leapt the rubble first—followed by two cloaked summoners and a bulky thornback brute. Flaming arrows zipped past Raven’s cover as defenders screamed over one another on VOIP. That’s when the chat overlay lit up—useless and glowing.
Zone chat flashed again:
[Parallax_Claude]: "East flank’s stable. Camera drone repositioning."
[Luciano]: "Camera? Bro there’s a tree with tusks tearing down the f— wall."
[Fairyblade]: "West breach needs reinforcement. They’re pulling the defense away for a slow pan."
Raven fired. His bolt arced downward—punched through a sap-caster hiding behind Barkbone’s flank. Duskrunner shifted, almost growling.
"Hold," Raven said under his breath.
"They’re calling it a ’heroic rotation,’" Fairyblade muttered, pulling her trigger. "The recap edit’s already online."
A defender screamed below as the tower crumbled. Another guild squad—Redhall Vanguard—was flattened beneath collapsing debris.
No one cheered. No kill banners flashed.
Raven fired again. No words. No drama. Just precision.
Barkbone stumbled—briefly—but surged forward again. AI troops behind it surged too, emboldened.
"Next wave is right behind it," Duskrunner growled, barely audible.
"Then we thin it now."
Raven glanced once at Fairyblade, noting her eyes not on the battlefield—but flicking to zone chat, global rank feed, and player whispers.
"She’s not focused," Raven thought. "Something bothering her? Whatever."
"Backline just collapsed!" someone screamed over zone chat.
[Alundra_Tremorhold]: "Ignore the cameras. Stop the beast."
[Krant_SB]: "SOMEONE KILL THE CINE-MAGE STREAMING ABOVE THE WALL."
Fairyblade fired another bolt and exhaled. "They’ll say we won this phase because Vanguard ’led the rotation.’"
"They weren’t even here," Raven said quietly, locking in his last shot.
The ballista thrummed.
A split second later, Barkbone groaned—its undercarriage cracked by oilfire and shrapnel. It fell forward, impaling itself on the collapsed rubble it had made seconds ago.
Wall Sector 2 Lost — Forward Push Contained.
A unit of Velkarin NPCs broke formation and scattered, two of them caught under Barkbone’s tusk as it plowed through the barricade remnants. A player in green-laced armor tried to hold position—then blinked out as a system respawn marker replaced her body.
Duskrunner finally growled low, voice a quiet whisper. "I want action." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Raven nodded once, his tone calm. "Go."
He hopped onto Duskrunner’s back in one smooth motion.
The wolf leapt from the archway with a low snarl, bounding toward the chaos below. Just before Duskrunner’s fangs could reach the nearest Cindraleth soldier, Raven launched off his back—spinning midair—both daggers drawn.
Spirefang flashed.
Raven landed on the opposite flank in a crouch, blades carving through the first enemy he met—a cloaked summoner mid-chant. The casting ended in a wet choke.
Meanwhile, Fairyblade rose from behind her scorched platform. She drew her broadblade and muttered a single incantation—fairy fire ignited along the steel with a vibrant hiss. Her sword caught flame, and so did her smile.
Tiny elemental fairies, no larger than sparks, whirled around her shoulders. One chirped.
"Missed you too," she murmured, then charged.
Alundra’s group was the next to fall. One by one, Tremorhold’s core defenders were cut down as the enemy surged through the breach. What had started as a coordinated hold turned into a scattered retreat. Buffs flickered out. Healing cooldowns failed. Her sword clattered before her body vanished into light.
The defenders at that section crumbled.
Duskrunner fought like a blur—lunging and ripping through a thornback brute—but too many surrounded him now. A spore-thrower detonated near his legs. He twisted to leap back toward Raven—too slow.
[Your summon has died. Cooldown for resummon: 1 minute]
Raven blinked. A sap blade sliced through his left shoulder from behind, wrenching his stance sideways. He staggered and twisted, dragging Spirefang across the attacker’s throat in one clean arc. The enemy dropped—but the motion exposed his right side.
A thornback brute barreled in.
Raven tried to dodge, but the brute’s club slammed into his ribs, lifting him off his feet and slamming him into the stonework. The HUD blurred. His health bar shrank violently.
He pushed up to one knee, breath ragged, and raised both blades for one final counter.
The second blow came faster. A sap-caster’s spike dart impaled his hip. His vision cracked like glass.
[You have died.]
Fairyblade was the last one standing. She saw Raven go down from across the plaza—his body tossed against the rubble like a broken puppet, vanishing into light.
Her breath caught.
"You want the rest of me? Come take it," she growled through clenched teeth.
She stepped forward, too far. A Cindraleth druid surged toward her. She swung her fireblade in reflex, severing its arm in a hiss of embers. But her focus was already on three more enemies closing in from the flank.
"Burn with me, then."
The ground beneath her feet glowed faintly.
She looked down.
The AoE trap detonated.
Fairyblade’s form was consumed in fire and impact. Her screen turned black.
[You have died.]
Both Raven and Fairyblade resurrected moments later—separately, but silently—in the sanctum layer of the city, blinking against the dim glow of the resurrection altar. The outer wall was gone. The breach was open. The defenders had been reach the city.
The inner city defense.
Outside, Emberwatch was still burning.
Then came the sound—a low, echoing thunder that rolled across the city like the heartbeat of a giant.
The Sky Pyres had activated.
Massive towers at each quadrant of the city erupted in vertical flame, pillars of fire stabbing into the sky and bathing the rooftops in hell-orange light. The buff pulsed across everyone’s HUD:
Sky Pyre Blessing (Active): +15% Ballista Damage.
Fairyblade turned to Raven, "It’s Sky Pyre! Let’s go!"
Raven walked without a word—running through the city’s narrow roads. Players shouted in zone chat. Resources were pooled. Defenders who had logged in from other time zones gathered to replace those Emberwatch had lost. He reached the central road, where the most dangerous invaders had already pushed deepest into the inner city.
Below, spore-bomb carriers emerged again—squat things with bulging bellies and fungal sacs strapped to their backs, waddling in erratic paths toward the barricades.
Raven drew his daggers and dashed forward, low and fast. He struck the first carrier in the gut, flipping over its shoulder as it exploded behind him in a wave of rot gas. Before the smoke cleared, Fairyblade whirled in beside him, a small wind fairy fluttering past her flowing hair.
"Boost me," she whispered.
The wind spirit burst forward in a small cyclone, circling her boots—amplifying her speed. She vanished in a blur, slashing a second spore-carrier down the middle with her flame-coated blade.
The third one howled.
Raven moved again—shoulder-first into its path—ducked a wild claw swing, then impaled both Spirefang daggers into its chest. It erupted in a wet, fungal pop.
Then came footsteps.
A rogue from Redhall Vanguard joined them without a word, backstabbing a spore-thrower. Two mages followed, launching a shockwave spell across the plaza. One by one, defenders rallied.
Livestream Interference – Parallax Vanguard Segment
Just as Raven and Fairyblade braced for the next wave, their screens flickered.
[Live Now: PARALLAX VANGUARD – Western Breach Defense]
A semi-transparent overlay expanded in the upper-left corner—five glowing player frames from the Parallax team striking dramatic poses beside a flaming barricade... on the wrong side of the city.
"Streaming from the West Wall! Vanguard holding strong!" "Make sure to follow and like for post-war drops!"
Fairyblade cursed. "They’re not even near the breach."
Raven didn’t reply, but his movements grew sharper. Annoyed.
The popup blocked part of his field of vision—and not just his. Two players near them missed the telltale hissing of a spore-bomb carrier.
The explosion knocked them both out of sync—one slammed into a barricade and fell still, the other rolled screaming until his avatar blinked into a respawn marker.
[Player: Vyr_Nailo has died.] [Player: TekkRoot has died.]
"Close that damn stream!" someone yelled in zone chat.
But the system UI wouldn’t allow toggling until the cinematic intro ended.
Fairyblade swiped the overlay down and ducked just in time. "We don’t need a camera. We need a wall."
Raven dove back into the fight.
The invaders didn’t care who was trending.
No cheers. No kill-feed shouts.
But the breach was held.
And that was enough.
But someone survived because of it.
And that was enough.
