Aster walked inside the mansion leaving the kid behind, meanwhile goblin kept Uriel pinned to the ground and Clayton, the nearsighted hunter, pointed his gun at Uriel waiting for her to come back. The fact that Uriel was their fellow apprentice didn’t make any difference when it came to safety and they weren’t willing to take any chances.

If he was indeed a killer, they would have to get rid of him on the spot for the greater good.

It wasn’t the first time that Uriel felt his fate was completely out of his own hands, he was also no stranger to the feeling of being powerless in such situations, but for some reason he felt particularly hurt that his fellow apprentices wouldn’t even listen to him.

The next minute was extremely uncomfortable for Uriel who couldn’t move and was barely able to breathe, waiting for Aster to come back while in the presence of an enemy disguised as a little child. Things didn’t look great, especially now that he couldn’t count with the strength bonus and regenerative abilities Water warlock’s blessing gave him.

However, that didn’t mean he was completely powerless, even in that disadvantageous position Uriel was still able to use his smartphone.

’Should I text Nika? Now would be a great time for her to show up from my shadow...’ Uriel inwardly thought, but then discarded the idea because the reason why he was on his own was precisely to avoid relying on his friends and grow up as a hunter.

He knew that if he called his friends they would show up as soon as possible, even Medusa who was mad at him, but instead of calling any friend he went with something more risky, but also potentially more rewarding. Find exclusive stories on novelbuddy

"No buts, he’s a murderer! As a ranger, my duty is to uphold the law." Goblin readied himself to deal the finishing blow on Uriel.

"Stop, you idiot! You always jump to conclusions! Most of the blood is dry, which means the murder must have taken place at least last night and he was with us at the time."

"Yes, but he’s clearly lying! There’s no cryptids inside the walls."

"You can’t dismiss the evidence, release him." The shortsighted apprentice cut him short.

"I still don’t trust you, stay here while the authorities show up." Goblin said after releasing Uriel from his powerful grip.

"Uhm, guys, I think there’s a problem. I can’t call the rangers because my phone is dead." Aster said.

"Interesting, mine isn’t working either."

"You don’t think..." Goblin started sweating cold when he realized his cellphone was dead too. It wouldn’t be strange if only Aster’s phone was dead, Clayton’s phone being dead could be a coincidence, but not even Goblin was naive enough to ignore that all their phones were dead.

Unfortunately for the apprentices, the realization that Uriel was telling the truth all along came too late as the sun was already setting on the horizon and as soon as the last beam of sunlight licked the top of the wall, the mansion became as dark as night in an instant.

The cryptid’s field of disruption prevented any electric lights to be turned on and the young hunters were left with no source of light at all.

"That’s not a child..." Clayton, the only one with nightvision, managed to say before his voice became muffled until he fell silent.

Although Uriel was unable to see what happened, he had no need to. His first instinct was to make a run for it, but knowing the sneaky nature of the skinwalkers he knew the safest option was to go inside. Instead of going by himself, though, Uriel decided to take Goblin and Aster with him in case he needed witnesses to vow for him.

"Hurry up inside!" Uriel shouted as he tried to open the mansion door, but it was locked.

"I can’t see anything." Aster cried as she froze in fear, she felt completely vulnerable in the darkness and couldn’t move a finger.

Not wanting to waste any more time, Uriel grabbed her hand and kicked the door open, dragging her as he made his way inside the mansion. Goblin, who couldn’t make heads or tails of the situation, followed the sound of their footsteps destroying furniture, sculptures and paintings in blind clumsiness.

"What the fuck just happened?" Goblin asked witha jagged breath after deactivating his trait. He couldn’t see what happened either, but the primal instinct of survival told him that if he stayed just a second longer he would have died.

"I tried to warn you, that thing wasn’t a child, it was a cryptid." Uriel replied as he lit up a gas lantern he bought from his souvenir shop.

"I... I believe you." Aster whispered.

"You guys are completely out of it," Goblin scoffed and then continued. "Cryptids can’t get inside the city, everyone knows it. Aster, I’m disappointed in you."

"But you saw it youself, our cellphones are dead and Clayton... he..."

"We didn’t see anything, it can be a coincidence for all we know."

Realizing that there was no way of convincing Goblin with words, Uriel made his case by opening the door to the room they were in and waving his hand inviting him to go outside. "What? If there’s no cryptids in the city, it should be safe to go out, right?" He said when it was clear Goblin wasn’t leaving. However, something Uriel could not foresee happened.

"Help me, please, I’m hurt..." Clayton’s voice was heard in the distance, though Uriel knew it couldn’t possibly be him and stopped Aster who was about to exit the room.

"Let me go! He’s wounded."

"Calm yourself, that thing is not your friend. It’s a skinwalker." The mention of the skinwalker left both Aster and Goblin with a gaping mouth. The government made sure the tale of how three brave ascended killed an entity rank cryptid reached the whole city, even the east gate district.
