Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 450: Questions
The instant the jaguar spirit showed up the hordes of revenants threw themselves at it. The poor feline was so overwhelmed it could barely fight back, but it wasn't a surprise to Uriel. It wasn't that the jaguar spirit wasn't strong, but Uriel knew he didn't have enough flux energy to keep the summon active long enough for it to make any difference.
"What are you waiting for, a written invitation?" Uriel grunted before fighting his way outside the prison. The rest of the hunters were still in a daze which caused them to hesitate before following him, but when they saw how easily he dispatched the first line of revenants they snapped out of their reverie and jumped into action.
The wild girl too followed Uriel, though she limited herself to dodge the revenants and did her best to avoid harming them. To her, even if they didn't look like humans, they were the same thing. She was able to feel the souls within the rotting puppets and she couldn't bring herself to kill them in spite of their violence.
"We need to go to the armory, the guns we took from the guards ran out of ammo already." Sharp voiced out.
"What do you want me to do? I'm doing my best already." Uriel replied with a jagged breath after cancelling Dash to take a break. After being swarmed by the tide of revenants, the jaguar spirit summon was cancelled and the group was now surrounded by enemies.
Uriel tried finding a weakspot, but everytime the revenants were defeated they would simply reassemble themselves and then continue fighting. As if that wasn't troublesome enough, their strengths and traits were too varied and there was no way to tell when to block and when to dodge.
Uriel noticed how before activating their traits, the revenant's eye sockets would briefly brim in green and thanks to that, he was now able to keep up the pace. Blocking their attacks wasn't that difficult, the problem was that no matter how hard he struck them they would keep regenerating and he was already getting tired.
"We just need to hold on until morning, just a little longer." Uriel reassured.
"We were better off down at the prison!" Horace cried.
"Save your stamina for fighting, there'll be time to complain later." Sharp replied, but Horace paid no heed to her words and looked back at the entrance of the prison that was now relatively open.
Horace didn't stop to think that revenants were able to understand his words and when he saw the opportunity to retreat, he didn't hesitate. He sprinted all the way towards the prison and picked up the remains of what used to be a reinforced alloy door, but now was as flexible as a sheet of paper. He desperately attempted to put it back in its place as the revenants closed the gap.
Horace screamed to the top of his lungs, but his voice was soon muffled and the last thing Sharp saw of his friend was his hand being raised in a pleading manner barely above the horde.
It was the last straw for Sharp, who now lost all of her friends. They formed a team ever since she acquired their traits, before even joining the rangers and now she was completely alone in the world.
"Wake up! This is our chance!" Uriel grabbed her by the arm and threw her as far as he could without harming her. It was a page taken directly from Luna's book and it was something she would always do with complete disregard for how the other person felt about it, but it solved the problem.
They were completely surrounded and the only way out was to either fly, being thrown away was the next best thing.
Sharp let out an embarrassing scream before landing on top of the scaffolding that lead to the outpost wall, but once she composed herself she rushed towards the armory. She knew that outpost like the palm of her hand and it took her no time to fin her way there. Thankfully, the revenants showed no interest in destroying the building, which meant the place was still secure.
Her first instinct was to grab her weapon and be on her way, but then she realized she had more options. All the other rangers had died and death peope had no need for weapons. After taking a look at the weapons, her eye was drawn towards an orichalcum broadsword that used to belong to her friend Casius.
He was the one in charge of that outpost and it wasn't a surprise the best weapon in the arsenal belonged to him. She softly stroke the blade on the side and for a moment, she felt as though Casius himself was giving her permission to use it.
Had it been any other ranger, she would have found a safe spot to hold her ground, but even if Uriel wasn't one of her beloved friends he was still a fellow ranger and she couldn't let him die after saving her life. She heaved a sigh before opening the door and rushed in to fight against the endless horde.
The broad sword made quick work of the revenants, limbs made of twigs and goo flew in every direction as she made her way like she was trimming the garden. The orichalcum blade was sharp and it suited her well, but even an expensive weapon like that wasn't enough to keep them from returning over and over.
She couldn't see Uriel and she had no choice but to head towards the prison. She bravely fought using the sword to the best of her ability, but the rattlesnake poison was still coursing through her veins and her strength had yet to come back.
She endured the first blow, then the second, but the ones that followed were increasingly more powerful and she was left without even a breath of air to scream for help. At that point, Sharp closed her eye with the faint smile of someone reaching their end knowing they fulfilled their duty.
"This isn't the time for taking a nap, we need you." Uriel pulled her hand, more than helping her to stand up he forced her.
"I can't fight anymore." Was all Sharp could say. Instead of relieved after being saved once more, she felt offended that Uriel took her heroic ending from her.
"Just a few minutes more." Uriel grunted after being hit on the stomach. When the wild girl saw this, she placed herself in front of him and tanked the following attacks giving Uriel the chance to recover somewhat, but he was in no shape to keep fighting close combat.
Both him and Sharp resorted to firearms, though uriel's magnum revolver was way more effective than the intermediate rifle she carried. After each shot, the revenants were pulverized and it took them way longer to recover from that, but the worst had yet to come.
When dawn break, Uriel realized that only the revenants hit directly by the light would disappear while the others remained unscathed and the outpost walls were tall enough to provide shade to the unsightly creatures.
"You clearly are stronger than I thought, but it's time for you to come with us." Said Rusty after taking a step in front accompanied by Young.
"It's not as bad as it looks, I swear. You'll get to spend more time with us and reunite with those you love." Young added.
"Dying is one thing, but spending eternity next to you guys, no thank you." Uriel replied with a snarl. He was with them for a short period, but it was all he needed to know for sure that army life wasn't for him.
"Oh, really?" Asked Rusty with a snarky tone and then continued. "Even if it meant reuniting with one of your friends? They tried their best to survive, they even made it to the zeppelin, but even then... one of them died."
"You're lying! I know they survived." Uriel replied, suspecting they were just saying that to taunt him.
"No, he's telling the truth. One of them died, but if you want to find out who you'll have to come with us." Young insisted.

"This can't be the truth, they're far stronger than you."
"I didn't say we killed them, a tall woman with glowing red eyes did the work for us. Now that I think about it, she was a babe, If only I was ten years younger... and still alive." Rusty laughed.
Uriel had no means to know whether he was telling the truth or not, but his description matched Medusa perfectly. It probably wasn't Rusty's intention, but mentioning Medusa eased Uriel's worries. If he was telling the truth, it meant that Medusa killed one of his friends which was unthinkable.
It would be more believable that Luna lost control and killed someone, but Medusa would never kill without a reason.
'Or would she?' Uriel inwardly thought after briefly reminiscing the terrifying effect her trait had on him.
