Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 573: Doctor’s orders
"Did I miss something?" Luna asked in her usual aloof expression. Inwardly, though, she was dying of embarrassment and so many opposing thoughts crossed her mind like stars on the night sky. She looked like any other day, waking up late after a night of research, only unlike most nights her latest research wasn't about cryptids but humans instead. freēwēbnovel.com
It was her first time sleeping alone with Uriel, who also just happened to be of the opposing sex. Although she rapidly fell asleep by the soothing smell of her favorite person and at least to her was the best night sleep she ever had, as soon as she got out of the room she was greeted by people making strange faces she couldn't understand.
'Do I have something on my face? Why are they laughing?' She rubbed her eyes and passed her tiny hand across her face failing to find anything wrong.
"Nothing, Uriel was just telling us he's an archaeologist." Nika replied and moved the chair for the tiny huntress to sit.
'I should have watched my face before breakfast, they're still giving me a weird look.' Like every morning Luna forgot to even wash her face before breakfast because she was always too hungry after getting up. But because of the strange looks she had been getting this time she truly regretted not even looking herself in the mirror. 'Who's this woman? She smells funny.
She gave me an extra portion of bacon, I like her.'
Although Luna didn't make any conversation, it couldn't be said she was eating in silence as a low growl came from deep within her throat. She was conscious about this habit, but keeping it under control when strangers were near was already difficult and now she was surrounded by friends.
'Maybe people looked at me weird because I did something wrong. Cassandra always warned me about men. I'd like to say Uriel is different, but he's not. I don't regret it, he's been nice to me. This is tasty, I'd like to have more, but I'm the weakest member of the pack. I must make sure they already ate to not offend them.' Luna took a glance at the different breakfasts everyone had.
Medusa was done with her sandwich, Nika already ate her toast but she had two cups of coffee instead of one and Uriel's cereal is cold. Uriel got scolded.'
"Uhm, more." Luna presented her empty plate at the maid. She didn't react to her growls nor did she make any strange faces and even remained silent. Luna was liking her more by the second. 'I'm full of energy today, I think my research will be fruitful. I wish I was here when the hybrids climbed aboard, I could have learned so much about them.
At least now I know Chiara is a dryad and her brother Kalos is a treefolk. It's really interesting that siblings can be different types of hybrids.'
"Luna, Professor Lamar is asking for your help." Miss Dragonfang walked in and got too close for Luna's comfort.
'It's fine, she's not doing this on purpose.' Luna thought.
"Did something happen to uncle Jon?" Medusa's shocked expression was hidden by her blindfold and she stood up in a rush.
"Professor Lamar didn't say, but judging by his attitude it must be serious. He also said only Luna can come."
'Professor Lamar doesn't have an attitude, he has a condition. It makes him prone to violence unless he drinks his juice. I wish people understood him better, he's a nice man.'
"Uhm, no."
"I'll tell him you're busy." Miss Dragonfang said.
"I'm not busy, don't lie to him."
"Then what should I tell him? That you're not busy, but you're not coming anyway?"
"Yes."
"Luna, when someone asks you something you don't want to do it's fine to say you're busy." Nika explained.
'Lying is bad, I don't like lying. I've been forced to keep too many secrets for too much time.' Unable to wrap her head around the concept of politely refusing to do something, Luna decided it was easier to just go and see what Lamar wanted instead of wasting her time trying to unravel the silliness of white lies.
"I'll go."
"I swear, every time I think I understand Luna she changes her mind." Nika sighed.
'I didn't change my mind. I still don't want to go.' Luna inwardly growled. It was such a fine morning with her friends, she wanted to remain with them for a few more minutes and breathe in their smells to feel closer to them. 'Just a sniff, that will last me the day.'
Before exiting the room, Luna glared at Uriel, Nika and Medusa sending shivers down their respective spines and making them think she was onto them. In reality, she was just basking in their aromas before walking out.
"Luna, you're here." Lamar greeted her in the medic bay.
"Yes." Luna nodded.
"Take a look at the patient and tell me what you can see." Lamar slid the curtain to reveal the pitiful sight of Jon.
"Vitals steady, exposed bones, muscles, body fat, partial regeneration in the lower abdomen, multiple fractures and lacerations along with third degree burns."
"Who are you calling fat?" Jon scoffed triggering a heavy reaction in Luna who didn't expect Jon whose life hung on the thinnest thread to be awake. However, none of that showed and instead she spoke in her monotone.
"Uhm... uhmm... patient is conscious."
"Yes, well... I've been trying my best to knock him off but he's too strong. Unfortunately, his regeneration process is unusually slow."
"Why?"
"That is exactly what I have been trying to find out, but despite my flawless medical diplomas it's been a while since I practiced and I wonder if you might 'smell' what's wrong here. Patient reports he was subjected to countless traits in the fight against the revenants, some of which could have been related to toxins, poisons or diseases."
"Heavenly rank hunters are impervious to diseases, holy rank hunters should have better defenses."
"I know it doesn't make sense, that's why I called you. I've never treated a holy rank hunter before." Lamar massaged his temple in frustration then took a sip of a test tube he grabbed from a small case on his lab coat pocket.
"Hey doc, why don't you gimme some of that? Maybe that will help."
"I'm afraid not. This drink is... special." Lamar replied.
"Bloody hell, what does one have to do to get a drink in this plane?"
"It's not a plane, it's a zeppelin. Professor, the patient seems to be having delusions."
"I know it's not a goddamn plane, I just want a drink!"
"In case you wonder, we tried giving him alcohol, but he became violent and almost destroyed the entire med bay."
'He's one of the greatest minds of the century according to Uriel and he's also Medusa's uncle. I'm not confident I can find anything wrong, but for them I'll do my best.' Luna thought, then got close to the patient to smell him just in case her enhanced sense of smell detected anything.
Despite Jon not being one Luna's friends, she found his smell to be oddly familiar which was easily explainable by the close relationship she had with Medusa. Luna had found out that people that remained close to each other for long periods of time synchronized their bodies, causing strange effects like having similar smells and even synchronized heartbeats.
"It's not poison, toxin or disease." Luna said with confidence.
"I was afraid that might be the case. I'm sorry Jon, we don't have the means to treat you. We'll have to take you to the closest Mapple corp. installations."
"No! Doc, please don't! I don't want to be a hunter anymore, I can't go back there!" Jon cried as he rambled about titans being immortal and Sam's strange ability, which gave Luna an idea.
'What if the reason I find this smell familiar is not because of Medusa, but because of Sam? What if he left some trace that's making it difficult for Jon to heal? His trait was 'Lightbringer' and he was able to see in the distance and even in darkness, but who knows what his skills are now that he's a holy rank hunter himself. Maybe it's not poison, but a flux related ability.'
Without explaining her reasoning, Luna ran from the scene and returned five minutes later dragging a very annoyed Uriel.
"Why did you bring me here?"
"Energy drinks... uhm, lots."
"I'm not an expending machine!" Uriel rebuked, but did what she asked nonetheless.
"Not enough, more."
"They're expensive, you know... flux expensive I mean." Uriel managed to correct his slip of tongue, fortunately Jon didn't seem to notice.
"I don't want more of that piss water, give me some scotch!"
"Only if you behave." Luna nodded at Jon then looked at Uriel who paled at his bleeding wallet making him look like another patient in the medic bay.
"Of course, little lady." Jon smiled through what was left of his face.
"Channel your flux and start drinking." Luna said.
"How can I refuse, it's doctor's orders."
