"Keep firing!"

"Don't let up, you hear? Hey, Cadet! Focus! Keep shooting that shit! If it looks like a monster and it's moving, shoot it!"

"Kill the invaders!"

"Show no mercy!"

"Show them the might of the Border Patrol Guardians!"

"Unleash your wrath upon them, brothers and sisters!"

"Wipe them out!"

"Tell them that they're not welcome here!"

"We will not fall!!"

The retaliation was fierce and extreme. The incoming horde was greeted by the raging wrath of the guardians. All weapons were fired. Nobody cared about wasting ammunition right now or how much this will all cost in the end. What they cared about is that if they have enough to last.

Because of the recent improvements on the bases, the horde was contained just fine. They were being funneled into where the guardians wanted them to, and the weapons were extremely effective against them.

That said, there were one or two void creatures who were able to survive the havoc and get close to the barriers. Unfortunately for them, even if they were capable of doing so, the barriers were too tough to be destroyed before they were killed, so the shields didn't really suffer any losses.

With how much void energy discharge there was coming from the portals, some soldiers were puzzled how the camps still weren't flooded or submerged completely at this point.

The reason behind this was the dams built for the sole purpose of collecting void energy. The damns have been expanded, turned into pocket dimensions capable of holding seas of void energy safely without being corroded. Not only did the flood not do any real damage to the camps, it's even replenishing their energy reserves, which means it helped instead of harming.

This kind of ingenuity was Cedric's specialty, showing just how largely he impacted the advancement and efficiency of the camp. If he hadn't been here, these void creatures would've long since taken over the camps, and the alliance would've faced a horrible crisis.

Despite the flashing lights, explosions, and panic, in truth, the defense was going very well.

The camp hasn't lost a life yet; there have been injuries, yes, but nothing life-threatening and nothing too extreme that the healers and medics couldn't deal with.

Alas, plans can't really keep up with the changes...

Boom!!

OOOOuuuuOooooUuuOooo!

A low and harrowing roar echoed across the camp. It undoubtedly came from a Void Creature, a big and slow one. Those who had weaker willpower and life evolution were affected by the roar. It caused them to feel nauseous, experience minor hallucinations, and it amplified their fears. The effect even caused some to abandon all thoughts of fighting back. A lot of people collapsed, fainted, and some even ran away hysterically as if they'd seen a horrifying monster.

This event caused the suppression efforts to weaken and made the veterans and the tenured soldiers curse in anger. However, they couldn't blame these people because this isn't the first time something like this happened. It's quite common, actually. All they could do, though, was to let the medics do their work while they covered for their incapacitated comrades.

But because the suppression efforts were weakened momentarily, it gave the monsters a chance to advance their march. What's worse is that now they're following the lead of a royal guard.

Yes, there's no doubting this. That one void creature that roared earlier was certainly a Royal Guard. Anything less than one wouldn't elicit this kind of effect on their comrades, especially when they're behind cover.

"Somebody, engage that Royal Guard. Don't let it destroy the barriers. Be on alert as well; we have no idea if it's by itself or if it brought its friends yet."

This time, a few of the Paragons moved out.

So far, they've been sitting on the sidelines, watching as the defense occurs before them. They haven't been given orders because they weren't needed then, but obviously, it's different now.

As some of the Paragons moved out to engage the Royal Guard that showed up, others began thinking about the relevance of its appearance and began preparing for the worst.

See, the Royal Guards being here was within expectations. After all, a horde of this size surely isn't just some random coincidence, especially after the Void Prince's birth. With the void creatures' increasing intellect as time passed, it's even more unlikely for them to do something without any relevant thought or plan behind it.

And the thing about Royal Guards... they don't stray too far from their liege. Which means that the Void Prince must be watching them; after all, he's the only one that could command them to make an appearance.

As the Paragons engaged the humongous Royal Guard that appeared, they quickly noticed that it was a trap.

This Royal Guard wasn't alone...and it wasn't a big one as they expected. Instead, its initial appearance only looked that big because, in truth, it was a combination of the five Royal Guards partially fused together. As soon as the Paragons appeared, they separated into five to counterattack, catching them off-guard.

The fusion being undetected wasn't anybody's fault. It could only be blamed on the strange and creepy biology of the Void Creatures. With all that pitch-black and glitchy nonsense that their body was, how could anybody easily tell?

It was a counter ambush. A clever plan, which isn't really a big deal, but since it was done by the void creatures, it turns into a really big deal.

Void Creatures, strategizing and using tactics? That's wild. It's such an outlandish concept that it's hard to believe unless one witnessed it with their own eyes. And yet that's exactly what's happening right now.

As if the existence of the Void Creatures wasn't enough. Now, they're even showing signs of advanced intelligence. Oh, boy...

Alas, this isn't something that they have the luxury to discuss right now. They're in the middle of an invasion. It wouldn't be too late to speculate on other things once they survived this.

With the Paragons joining the fray, the battlefield turned even more chaotic. Some of the incapacitated people earlier were already recovering and rejoining the defense.

It's still horrible, though. The horde had already advanced after taking advantage of the weakness earlier; now, they're practically gnawing at the barriers, acting like starved monsters salivating over the people behind the shields.

The main barrier is holding on strong. They have been improved and had a better power source; it will hold up for a long time even under this kind of duress. However, with the appearance of the Royal Guards, things might get a little dicey; that's why people are looking out for any signs of accidents so that they could respond immediately.

Phew! Boom!

"Fuck!"

"Shit!"

"What the fuck was that!?"

The soldier was startled. They weren't able to see it properly, but something crashed into the shield so hard that it shook the entire camp. The barriers were now covered in webs of cracks, a sign that they're nearly falling apart.

At the impact of the hit, aside from the wide webs of cracks, there was a large patch of black goo splattered at the opposite side. This tells them that it's this that hit the barrier and shook so hard that everyone and their mothers felt it.

But before the barrier fell apart, which will undoubtedly cause the soldiers to panic, the barrier released a light, and the damage was being restored. There is no doubt that this was another function of the barrier and its use of large amounts of resources to do so; however, that's nobody's concern right now.

Unfortunately, though, it didn't end there...

Phew! Boom!

Another impact was felt all over the camp, landing on the barrier. And because everybody's paying attention now, some people managed to catch where it's coming from.

The attack looked like a black comet, carrying immense momentum, enough to shake the barriers and leave it cracked. It came from the opposite side of the gates, making it unknown who or what exactly was throwing it. That's the dilemma they're facing now.

On the bright side, though, the barrier can endure far more than this. If this was the old one, hell, there's not even a need for that black comet; the persistent gnawing of the horde was more than enough to take it down. The new, though? It's way tougher and more efficient. It would take ten times this kind of impact to punch a hole through it, and it has to happen at once, or else the barrier will just immediately restore its durability.

Phew! Boom!

Another one came, but it's useless. The barrier was damaged but was also immediately repaired. At some point, two black comets came at once, but since they landed at different angles, the damage remains negligible.

Seeing this, the clever soldiers realized that the unexpected comets were nothing to be feared. They can safely ignore it since the barrier will hold steady and will continue to protect them.

Therefore, they immediately felt relieved somehow and returned their focus to the gnawing horde in an attempt to cull their numbers as much as possible.
