Chapter 49: No Shield Can Save You

"Shadow Girl!"

"Yes, it’s Shadow Girl. S-Class, Rank 13, she’s here to save us!"

The rest of the Strike Team were elated by her presence, I would have never imaged the ISA would send her on a mission like.

The moment those words came out if her mouth, the battlefield behind us changed.

"Be still..."

The shadows paused mide whirl. Chains froze mid rattle. Not even a breeze dared to blow as if the sur felt suspended.

She hovered slowly, landing a few feet away from me. Her eyes were still glowing unnaturally violet as she stared at me intensively.

Up and down.

I could tell, no. I could feel her questions manufacturing in her head like a money printing machine.

Too many, but she still remained composed.

"E-Class Hero Rank 50? Reno Renly..." She said slowly, her eyes taking in my golden presence.

"You ditched the mask, I can see your face now. So you’re the so called ’Bionic’ golden streak that the ISA says took down Gravehowl..."

I wasn’t surprised she knew that. Most S-Class heroes were aware of my existence since I got the Forever Core but do not know my identity.

"How?" She asked, tilting her head to the side.

"What are you, Reno?" She added, this time her voice was lower, unsure if it even deserved to be voiced aloud.

I stiffened.

This wasn’t the time to be mesmerized by someone who’s nonchalant about being a hero like Shadow Girl.

Since her assessment day, she refused to go on any mission till now. And, if I’m to guess why she chose to show up for this one was because she became very inquisitive about the ’Bionic Golden Streak ’.

I clenched my jaw.

"I have one thing to ask if you... Yelena?", I said softly.

Her eyes widened as if me calling her by her first name was a taboo.

"So the bionic talks..." Her glowing eyes died down as she turned to look at Sherman who was just seating their wait for us.

"You are signed under the Red Lion Guild... I would prefer you keep whatever you see here to yourself till I reassess..."

She flung her head back to me.

"What?"

"Don’t mention it, not to any faction. Not to your Guild. No one."

"And if I already did?"

I sighed, dragging my my gaze across the scene till I met Sherman’s figure.

"You didn’t... If you did, you would feel the need to be here. See me for yourself".

Her brows knit together. "So, the strike team they know too..."

"Evidently," I said.

Just then—

Tti-ring.

[Compass Needle Activated]

Boom!

A explosion roared to our left, just beyond the burnt ridge. The ground cracked open beneath our feet from the sheer impact.

"Get down!"

I grabbed her arm and yanked her closer to my chest as another flurry of long range blast tore through the remains of the dead army.

Sherman wasn’t done, and he didn’t look happy either.

I shot up, and there he was.

Still seated like a brooding tyrant on his throne, heaving with anger as his huge finger jammed the buttons at will.

"Destructive Downpour: Falling Bucket!!"

"You think I’m afraid of shadows and gold? You and your little girlfriend will pay for what you did to my brothers and sisters..." Sherman bellowed.

"She’s not..." I paused, glanced at her and surprisingly she had a funny look on her face. "Never mind."

The next downpour was already forming, the other heroes ran to the edge of the battle ground to avoid being hit by the death rays.

I could see it, a ball of purple-white energy growing between the mouth of the cannon above his head, humming violently as it gathered charge.

He was aiming directly for me as the intensity of my Compass Needle notification blared with more urgency.

"Looks like he’s focusing on you," Shadow Girl muttered.

"Obviously."

I immediately shoved her to the side so she doesn’t get hit.

Almost immediately, she switched backwards— turning eyes back to the remnants of the Orcs, maybe two dozen soldiers still trying to go after the rest of the strike team.

She eyed me, probably because she didn’t fancy how I shoved her. "Handle him, I’ll erase the rest".

Without another word, she dissolved into black fluid that seeped into the shadows, sliding across the ground like a demon.

I focused on Sherman, if I was going to defeat him I would have to get rid of that troublesome shield of his.

His Canons charged.

"Let’s go band for band!"

I squeezed my right fist.

"Gold... "

I shot out my left hand.

"Echoes..."

"Time and time again..."

"Forever Core’s system..."

Bam!

I slammed my arms together again creating a series of open cannon hatches brimming with golden energy flickering to life.

"Supreme Skill: Ultra-Canon Incinerate!!!!"

[Ultra Cannon Incinerate: Recharging... 67%]

"Tch... Not enough."

I jerked my body and the armor manifested more Canons from my shoulder region.

"Come out!!"

My boosters propelled me into the air and moved forward, closing the gap between me and Sherman.

"Come then, hero!" Sherman roared, his blast now glowing like a small sun. "Face me if you dare!"

I smirked.

"I’m going to destroy that annoying shield of yours and end your species..."

Boom!

I landed, after being satisfied with the distance between us.

Tti-ring

[Ultra Cannon Incinerate: Recharging... 80%]

"That should do it!!"

I glanced up and I realized his own attack had reached its full charging point and ready to go off.

So— 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Skill: Destructive Domain"

Fuuuu!

Out came the Forever Pikes— four of them, and with a loud thud they planted themselves around me and the golden electric dome manifested itself over me.

"The domain has been hit with an attack like this before, the Forever Armor would have upgraded by now to adapt to it... Yes, I can win".

"Supreme Skill: Ultra-Canon Incinerate!!!!"

"80%"

Shhiiiooooooooioommmmmmm!

I shot.

Whhrrrooooooooommm!

Sherman released.

The sound from both impact was defeaning, and it was sure to grab the attention of every single being, High Orc or human in the visinity.

Boom!

Attack for attack.

Shield for shield.

Who’s defense would give in?.
