Chapter 32: REVENAGE FOR WHAT EXACTLY? 3

By the time we finally reached the top, everyone was exhausted.

The hill was wide and open, much broader than it had looked from below. On the left side, far down the slope, a huge river stretched across the land, its surface catching the last light of the day. On the right, a narrow path continued forward, winding away into the distance. That path, according to the guards, would lead straight to Wu Village.

The head guard looked around once, then raised his voice.

"This is where we rest for the night," he announced. "Tomorrow morning, we head for Wu Village. Settle down properly. Food will be distributed later."

With that, he turned and walked away with his men, choosing a spot a short distance away to set up their own camp.

Only then did everyone truly relax.

Fu Fong slowly carried me to a large rock near the edge of the clearing and gently set me down. The moment my foot touched the ground, a dull ache shot through my ankle again, and I couldn’t help but inhale sharply.

He noticed immediately.

He crouched in front of me, his brows drawn together. "Does it still hurt?" he asked, reaching out as if to check my ankle.

Before he could touch me, footsteps sounded sharply behind us.

Fu Sheng had just reached the top with the wagon. The moment he saw what was happening, he dropped the rope and walked straight toward us. His movements were fast and stiff, his expression dark.

He grabbed Fu Fong’s arm and pulled him up roughly. "You’ve done enough," he said coldly. "You carried her up. That’s enough. I’ll take it from here."

Fu Fong frowned and pulled his arm back. "I’m helping," he said. "You didn’t seem capable enough earlier. What a terrible husband you are."

Fu Sheng’s eyes narrowed. "Capable?" he repeated slowly. "You stood by and watched your own wife carry both your children while complaining about her legs. And you dare to call me a terrible husband?"

Fu Fong’s face stiffened. "At least I stepped in when she was hurt."

Fu Sheng let out a short, humorless laugh. "You stepped in for another man’s wife."

The tension between them thickened instantly.

Around us, people paused and watched, but no one stepped forward. Madame Fu shook her head helplessly and exchanged a tired look with her husband, who could only sigh deeply.

I had had enough.

I planted my hand on the rock and tried to stand up, forcing myself between them. "Enough!" I snapped. "Both of you are acting like immature men."

They froze.

"I said I’m fine," I continued, my voice sharp despite the pain. "I don’t need either of you fighting over me like this."

Before I could fully straighten myself, strong arms wrapped around me.

I gasped.

Fu Sheng had suddenly lifted me off the ground, holding me firmly against his chest. I was so shocked that I forgot to react.

He didn’t look at me.

Instead, he turned his cold gaze toward Fu Fong. "This is my wife," he said clearly. "Worry about your own."

His voice left no room for argument.

With that, he turned and walked away, carrying me without hesitation.

I stared at his face in disbelief, while behind us, Fu Fong stood rooted in place, his expression dark and conflicted.

Not far away, Li Manman and Bai Ming watched everything unfold.

Their nails dug into their palms.

"Su Long, I’m gonna teach you a lesson.. hmmph!"

....

Fu Sheng carried me away from the crowd and toward the place where his family had decided to set up camp. His steps were steady, careful, as if he was afraid that even a small movement might worsen my injury. I could feel the warmth of his chest through my clothes, and for a moment, I forgot about the pain in my ankle.

When we reached the spot, Fu Fei was already there, spreading out the blankets and arranging them neatly on the ground. She looked up when she saw us and immediately moved aside to make space.

Fu Sheng gently lowered me onto the blankets, making sure my injured leg was properly supported. His movements were slow and cautious, nothing like the sharp anger he had shown just moments ago.

Li Manman arrived a little later, joining in with the arrangements, but no one really paid her any attention. She hovered around awkwardly, tried to help here and there, yet it was as if she wasn’t even there.

Fu Sheng knelt down in front of me and carefully lifted my foot, his fingers light as he checked my ankle. The moment he touched it, a dull ache spread again, and I hissed softly.

Madame Fu hurried over at once, her face full of concern. "Are you alright?" she asked anxiously.

"I’m fine," I replied quickly. "It just needs to be massaged a little. I’ll feel much better later."

Madame Fu finally relaxed a little and nodded, though she still looked worried.

Fu Tong and Fu Teng walked over then, both of them calling out, "Sister-in-law," almost at the same time. Fu Tong scratched the back of his head and said, "We’ll take care of dinner tonight. Fu Teng and I will go hunting and see if we can catch some forest rabbits or anything edible."

Fu Teng nodded firmly beside him.

Fu Sheng looked up at them. "Be careful," he said simply.

"We will," they replied together, then turned and left without delay.

Fu Sheng turned his attention back to me and continued massaging my leg slowly. His hands were warm and steady, pressing carefully around my ankle. It hurt, but strangely, it also felt good, and I found myself relaxing despite the pain.

"You’ll need ointment for this," he said after a moment.

I blinked at him, then said casually, "Check one of the bundles. You’ll find one there."

He didn’t question it. He simply nodded and stood up, immediately going to search through the bundles. Fu Fei joined him, helping him open and check them one by one.

The moment their backs were turned, I lowered my voice. "System."

A familiar presence answered me at once.

[Host detected. How may I assist you?]

"Upload an ointment from my medical pantry," I whispered. "Transfer it into one of the bundles."

[Request confirmed. Medical ointment transferring now.]

Before either of them could turn around, the system completed its task.

[Transfer complete.]

The blue light disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.

Almost immediately, Fu Fei’s voice rang out. "Brother, I found it!"

She picked up the ointment and handed it to Fu Sheng, who didn’t suspect a thing.

He returned to my side and applied the ointment carefully, his fingers moving in slow circles as he massaged it into my skin. The sensation made me inhale softly. It hurt, yes, but there was something else mixed into it that made my heart feel strangely restless.

I couldn’t help myself.

"You’re very good with your hands," I said lazily, my eyes fixed on his face.

He didn’t look up. "Don’t talk nonsense."

I smiled. "I’m serious. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you enjoyed this."

His hand paused for just a second before continuing. "You think too much."

I chuckled softly. "Then why do you look so focused? Someone might misunderstand."

He glanced at me briefly, his gaze calm and unreadable. "If you don’t want it to hurt more, stay quiet."

That only made me smile wider.

By the time he finished, the pain had eased significantly. He stood up and said firmly, "Stay here. Don’t move. I’ll handle everything tonight."

"I can help," I protested at once, trying to sit up.

"No," he replied flatly.

"I’m not that weak," I argued.

He looked down at me, his tone leaving no room for discussion. "You’re injured. End of discussion."

I opened my mouth to argue again, but in the end, he won.
