Chapter 33: REVENGE FOR WHAT EXACTLY? 4

Later that night, once the camp had fully settled, the head guard and his men began handing out the dry buns for dinner. The routine was familiar by now. One by one, people stood up, collected their share, and returned to their places.

This time, Grandma Fu, Uncle Fu, and Aunt Fu all made sure to stand up themselves. No one sent Bai Ming forward. They lined up properly, took the buns from the guards, and returned to sit together in silence.

They gathered close, the firelight flickering across their faces.

Uncle Fu glanced at Fu Fong and quickly noticed his sour expression. He hadn’t said a word since earlier, and his grip on the bun was tight, as if he had no appetite at all. Uncle Fu leaned closer and spoke in a low voice.

"Don’t take what happened earlier to heart," he said. "Fu Sheng has always been like that. Cold and stubborn. Besides, you’ll have plenty of chances with Su Long later. There’s no need to rush."

Fu Fong scoffed quietly but didn’t respond.

Just then, Bai Ming walked over, a careful smile on her face. She stood beside them and spoke softly.

"I have some good news."

Grandma Fu looked up sharply. "Then say it," she snapped. "Don’t stand there dragging it out."

Aunt Fu frowned. "It better be worth listening to. If it’s nonsense, don’t bother."

Fu Fong’s patience finally snapped. "I’m already annoyed," he said coldly. "Don’t make it worse."

Bai Ming’s smile faltered, but she stayed where she was.

Grandpa Fu tapped his stick lightly on the ground. "Enough," he said. "Let her speak."

Grandma Fu rolled her eyes. "If it weren’t for her uselessness, we wouldn’t be eating dry buns morning and night."

Grandpa Fu sighed, clearly tired of arguing.

Bai Ming finally spoke, her voice careful but unable to hide the excitement underneath.

"One of the guards," she said, lowering her voice, "agreed to return the bundles that were taken from me earlier."

The moment the words left her mouth, the group froze.

Aunt Fu’s eyes lit up at once, her lips curling into a pleased smile. Even Grandma Fu straightened slightly, her earlier irritation easing as she leaned forward.

"The bundles?" Aunt Fu asked quickly. "All of them?"

Bai Ming nodded. "Yes. He said they would be given back."

Grandma Fu let out a satisfied hum. "At least someone has sense," she muttered.

But Fu Fong’s reaction was completely different.

His brows pulled together, and he looked at Bai Ming sharply. "Why?" he asked. "Why would the guards suddenly forgive you and give your bundles back?"

The warmth drained from Bai Ming’s face.

She hesitated, then forced out an answer, her words stumbling over each other. "I—I explained what happened. I begged a little. He was kind enough to listen."

Her explanation only made Fu Fong laugh, a harsh sound that cut through the quiet.

"Kind enough?" he snapped, standing up suddenly. "Do you think I’m stupid?"

Bai Ming stepped back instinctively.

"You really expect me to believe that?" Fu Fong continued, his voice rising. "Guards don’t suddenly grow soft for no reason. Or what—did you start warming their beds to get your things back?"

His words were sharp and cruel.

Grandma Fu rolled her eyes, clearly uninterested. Uncle Fu didn’t even look up from his bun. Neither of them moved to stop him. They simply sat there, chewing slowly, as if nothing important was happening.

Bai Ming shook her head frantically, her voice breaking as she tried to explain. "No—Fu Fong, that’s not true. I didn’t do anything like that. Please listen to me—"

He didn’t.

Fu Fong stepped forward and grabbed her by the hair, pulling just hard enough to make her gasp. His face was close to hers now, his voice low and dangerous.

"If I ever find out you cheated on me," he said slowly, "I’ll kill you and throw your body away where no one will find it."

He released her roughly and turned away, walking back to his place as if nothing had happened.

Bai Ming remained where she was, her body trembling, fear written plainly across her face.

Aunt Fu finally stood up and walked over, her expression softening into something almost gentle. She pulled Bai Ming into her arms and patted her back.

"Don’t be scared," she said lightly. "My wonderful daughter-in-law, don’t mind Fu Fong. Men are always like this—too jealous, too possessive."

She pulled back slightly and smiled. "Now then, where are the bundles? Let me see what we can make from them."

Bai Ming’s eyes were red as she pointed weakly toward where she had placed the returned bundles earlier.

Aunt Fu immediately turned and walked off to retrieve them, already focused on what could be gained.

Bai Ming stayed behind, her hands clenched tightly at her sides, her body still shaking as the firelight flickered around her.

No one else noticed.

Or perhaps, no one cared.

Fu Jai walked close to Fu Li, her eyes sharp. She spoke low so no one would hear.

"You ready for revenge?" she asked.

Fu Li looked down, her hands tight. She did not answer fast. She thought of her family, how they all looked at Su Long, how they cared for her, how they forgot Fu Li. Once, they cared for her like that. Now, nothing.

Fu Jai frowned, her voice pushing harder. "If you don’t choose, you stay ignored. They will keep worshiping Su Long, and you will stay in the dark. Is that what you want?"

Fu Li’s chest burned, she hated the fact that they placed Su Long above her, it has been a whole day now and they didn’t even give her anything to eat or drink, they just completely abandoned her.

"no, I’m not gonna take this anymore."

"I’m ready," she said as she looked at Fu Jia with a sorta determined look.

Fu Jai smirked, her face cold but pleased. "Good," she whispered. "Then it starts tonight."
