The light of the morning filtered through the windows of the inn, painting the world around it a beautiful shade of gold.

The smell of roasted meat and fresh bread filled the air as the morning meal was being served.

The tavern was already lively with travelers and a few residents of the nearby town, their chatter blending with the occasional clang of dishes.

Ren descended the stairs, finding Thorn already seated at a table near the center of the room. The Knight was tearing into a roasted piece of meat, nodding in approval as he saw Ren approach. "Morning. You sleep at all?"

Ren sat across from him, stretching his arms. "A little. Had some things to take care of."

Thorn smirked. "That’s our young lord. Always plotting."

"And look where it’s got us."

"Heading straight to our deaths." Thorn shot back with a smile.

Ren opened his mouth to refute it, thought about it, and stayed silent.

Thorn chortled at that, munching on the meat in front of him.

A minute later, the tavern matron arrived with his breakfast—a hearty roast, thick slices of bread, and a side of boiled potatoes. "Here you go, love. Eat up, you need to stay strong if you’re travelling. Wise words from my nan."

"She sounds like a wise woman." Ren said with a smile, nodding in thanks before the matron walked away.

"Well," Thorn looked up at something over his shoulder and stood up from the table, "I wish you a happy breakfast."

Judging by Thorn’s reaction, Ren didn’t need to turn to know who it was.

Lilith had arrived.

She and Elias walked down the stairs into the tavern, their presence immediately drawing attention.

She was dressed in a travel outfit fitting her noble status, her crimson eyes sweeping the room before locking onto Ren.

Without hesitation, she walked over and sat beside him, offering a bright smile. "Good morning, Ren. Did you sleep well?"

Ren swallowed a bite of his food before answering. "Well enough. You?"

"Not as well as I would have if you had agreed to sleep in my room." Lilith said casually, picking up Ren’s cup of tea.

Ren nearly choked on his food. "Excuse me?"

Lilith leaned slightly toward him, her voice lowering into a conspiratory tone. "We are the highest authority figures of our families present. No one would have stopped us. We could have stayed in the same room."

Elias sighed from the next table, already rubbing his temple.

Ren set his utensils down and took a deep breath. "Lilith. We are not sleeping in the same room."

She tilted her head in a mix of confusion and amusement. "Why not? We’re engaged."

Ren met her gaze with all the seriousness that he had. "Because I said so."

This, he couldn’t let happen.

She pouted, but there was something unsettling about how lightly she took rejection. Like she was merely waiting for another opportunity. "It would have been nice."

Ren shook his head. "We’ll spend the entire day together in the carriage. That should be enough."

Lilith exhaled dramatically. "Fine, fine. I suppose I can accept that compromise."

Thorn, who had been watching in amusement, leaned toward Elias. "Does she ever let up?"

Elias remained expressionless. "No."

"I figured."

The conversation shifted back to lighter topics as they finished their meals. Soon after, the party gathered outside, the carriages being prepared for departure.

Servants packed their remaining belongings and secured their wagons while the soldiers mounted their horses, ready to resume their journey.

Ren and Lilith entered the same carriage once again, their entourage falling into formation around them.

The sound of hooves and rolling wheels filled the air as the caravan moved forward along the dirt road.

As the carriage swayed around them, Ren decided to broach a topic that had been on his mind since last night.

"Lilith," he began, watching her from across the carriage. "Tell me about your brother."

Lilith’s fingers, which had been idly tracing patterns on the window, froze. She turned her gaze to him, the brightness in her eyes dimming just slightly. "Why do you want to know?"

Ren kept his tone even. "I’ve never met him, and we’ll be in the capital soon. If he’s going to be there, I want to be prepared."

Lilith studied him for a moment before sighing. "Octavian. My dear older brother. The golden child of the Underwood family."

Ren remained silent, letting her continue at her own pace.

"Did you know he has the opposite of my Divine Gift?" She asked, her voice quieter now.

Ren raised a brow. There were two gifted people in the Underwood family?

"While I have Soul Dominion, he has Body Dominion. He can control his body to an… unnatural degree, enhancing his speed, strength, and durability far beyond normal limits."

"No one could touch me when I was younger. Not without consequences. No one but him."

"Because of his Gift?" Ren asked.

Lilith nodded. "Yes. He was the only one who could withstand my outbursts without dying."

"But instead of using that to help me, he used it to abuse me. He was the perfect heir, and I was the family’s shame. He hated me for it. I hate him for it."

Ren tapped his fingers against the wooden seat. "And now he’s in the capital. Do you think he’ll try something?"

Lilith’s expression darkened. "Octavian doesn’t need a reason to try something. He enjoys reminding me of my place. He’ll provoke me if given the chance."

Then a smile that sent a chill down Ren’s spine appeared on her face. "But don’t worry, Ren. I won’t let him ruin our time together."

Ren definitely wasn’t reassured. "If he does something—"

"Don’t interfere." Lilith said, cutting him off. "I will handle him myself."

Ren could see the resentment in her eyes, the tightly controlled anger she held toward her brother.

Clearly, this wasn’t just a sibling rivalry. It was something far more deep-seated.

Ren exhaled, deciding to let the topic drop for now. "Alright. Just… be careful."

Lilith smiled, her expression shifting back to its usual warmth. "Of course. We have far more important things to focus on, don’t we?"

Ren nodded, but in the back of his mind, he couldn’t shake the feeling that things wouldn’t be smooth sailing.

At least, he’d learned that Lilith could control her emotions perfectly. Except when it comes to him.

Well, that’s a problem for future Ren.
