After another day of travel, Ren and Thorn returned to Steadfast to continue from where they’d stopped.

As expected, the number of patrols had stayed the same. While they’d been suspicious, they hadn’t actually done anything to warrant increased patrols.

Their previous failure had cost them valuable time, but it was better to have to use an extra day than to bring down the whole city with them.

This time, they started on the streets, being even more careful than they’d previously been. Thorn led the way, his tracking ability guiding them through the streets to their next target. The second of the Three Swordsmen.

Ren was more eager to get to Giles than any of the three but this was the strongest trail. Either way, he was looking forward to it.

The trail led to another townhouse, and while this one was well-guarded, it wouldn’t be that hard to get in.

From their vantage point on the rooftop opposite the building, Thorn whispered, "He’s inside. Second floor, near the back. Guards at both entrances, two on the balcony. Probably more inside."

Ren studied the layout. "I want total privacy. That means all the guards must be eliminated. We’ll take care of the ones outside, then take the balcony inside. Less noise."

"Alright."

They scaled the neighboring building, using a nearby tree to sneak into the Swordsmen property.

It didn’t take them long to take care of the guards outside, who were ordinary soldiers. Then, they leaped onto the townhouse’s balcony.

The two guards barely had time to react before Ren flicked his coin, teleporting behind one and driving a dagger into his spine while Thorn slit the throat of the second. They caught the bodies before they could hit the ground, dragging them out of sight.

Sliding the balcony door open, they entered the house. Creeping through the house, they took out everyone they could find until the only person left was the second Swordsman, their target, who was in the study beyond the hall, reviewing documents under the light of several lanterns.

They moved fast.

Ren’s hand snapped forward as he threw his dagger, but the Swordsman reacted instantly, flipping the heavy desk over as a shield.

The dagger embedded itself in wood as the Swordsman drew his weapon, a long sword that glowed faintly in the dark with the power of his Bloodbinding.

"So, you’re the ones hunting us." The Swordsman said, his voice calm as if he’d expected the ambush. "It’s about time you stopped hiding."

Ren hurled a fistful of coins forward as Thorn lunged towards the swordsman. The coins bounced around the place like they were meant to.

In that same instant, Thorn exchanged a few strikes with the Swordsman, their blades emitting sparks as they met.

Ren teleported behind the man and as the Swordsman turned to defend himself, teleported again to his side and brought his leg down on the man’s knee with a crunch.

The Swordsman screamed through gritted teeth as he rolled away, Thorn’s sword flashing by where his shoulder had just been.

The swordsman rolled to his feet but Ren was already there. With a swing, he cut off the man’s swordhand. As both sword and hand fell, the man’s other hand flashed out, grabbed the hilt of the sword and thrusted towards Ren.

Ren skipped back and the man pivoted to bat away a strike from Thorn.

"You think you can dismantle Fuchsia by cutting off its limbs?" The Swordsman growled as he kicked Thorn away before twisting his blade to the side as Ren teleported to him, nearly catching Ren’s arm. "You don’t understand what you’re up against."

Ren narrowed his eyes. "We understand plenty."

He flicked a coin over the Swordsman’s head, teleporting behind him. The moment the Swordsman turned to react, Thorn slashed across his thigh.

The man staggered to the side, giving them just enough time for Ren to strike the back of his head with the pommel of his dagger.

The Swordsman collapsed, unconscious.

They wasted no time securing him, binding his arms above his head to the ceiling beams. It wasn’t easy with one hand missing but before long, they had him hanging.

His body sagged slightly as he regained consciousness, his expression shifting from confusion to amusement.

"Tying me up? How romantic."

Ren didn’t respond. Instead, he punched the man in the ribs, eliciting a grunt.

"We have questions. You have answers. Let’s start simple. Who ordered the Lilith job?"

The Swordsman chuckled as he wheezed. "And if I refuse?"

Ren slammed his fist into the man’s gut. The impact forced the air from his lungs, but when he lifted his head again, he was still smirking.

"You think pain will make me talk? I’ve been trained for worse."

Ren wiped his knuckles against his cloak. "You’re loyal. I respect that. But I don’t need you whole to get answers."

The Swordsman met his gaze with defiance. "Go ahead, then. Let’s see how much fun you have before I die."

Ren grabbed his dagger and pressed it against the man’s abdomen. "I can keep you alive for a long time. Cutting you open is just the start of your nightmare. You’ll talk before I’m done."

The Swordsman smirked. "That’s what you think."

Then, without hesitation, he snapped his arms downward, breaking the rope holding him to the ceiling. Before Ren or Thorn could react, he grabbed Ren’s hand with the dagger and plunged it into his neck.

He flashed Ren a blood stained smile as blood spurted out of his neck. A second later, he slipped into oblivion.

Ren swore, stepping back, leaving the dagger in the man’s throat as he slumped to the floor.

"Fuck!" Thorn cursed under his breath. "He killed himself."

Ren bent down and retrieved his daggerm wiping it on the man’s cloth. "Loyal to the end."

They stood in silence for a moment before Thorn’s expression shifted. "Ren, I found something. Another trail. It could be the third Swordsman."

Ren turned to him. "How strong is the trail?"

Thorn closed his eyes briefly, focusing. "Stronger than the last one. He was nearby recently. If we move now, I might have enough to catch him tomorrow."

Ren glanced at the Swordsman’s corpse. "No point in wasting more time here. Let’s take what we can and go."

They quickly ransacked the house, searching for anything of value. Piling all the money they could find, it all amounted to 3,000 gold coins. Enough to fund an entire militia.

Thorn whistled. "This is a fortune."

Ren nodded. "Fuchsia won’t care either way."

They could have taken valuables but those could be traced. The money was their best bet.

They quickly piled the coins into a big enough bag, and with one last glance at their fallen target, teleported out, disappearing into the night.
