Chapter 226: What Happened?

"Where are we going, Aiden?" Serena asked, her voice breaking the heavy silence that had filled the car for the past hour.

Nothing.

She tried again, leaning slightly toward him. "Okay... So, how was your meeting?"

Still, silence.

Her patience was beginning to wear thin, and her tone sharpened as she turned fully toward him. "Aiden Hawk, if you do not tell me why your panties are in a twist, then I swear I’ll—" frёewebηovel.cѳm

"I’m taking you out on a date," he interrupted abruptly, his tone clipped and his gaze fixed on the road ahead.

Serena blinked at him, momentarily caught off guard. "Oookay," she replied slowly, drawing out the word as she studied his profile. His jaw was tight, his knuckles gripping the steering wheel a bit too firmly, and his lips pressed into a thin line.

She shifted her gaze to the window, watching the scenery blur past. They’d been driving for almost an hour, and this was the first thing he’d said since they left. If she had to guess, she already knew the source of his foul mood.

It had to be Sidney.

The only person who could twist Aiden into this kind of brooding mess. Aiden had probably seen her with him. Hmm. So he was jealous?

Serena bit back a smirk, deciding to let him stew in his own jealousy for a while longer. If he wasn’t going to admit what was eating at him, then she wasn’t going to pry it out of him. Instead, she leaned back in her seat, crossing her arms with deliberate nonchalance, the corner of her mouth quirking up. Hadn’t she been feeling all sour whenever she thought of Samantha.

"Well, this should be fun," she muttered under her breath, loud enough for him to hear if he was paying attention. He wasn’t. Or if he was, he was not showing it.

So, instead of explaining herself as she probably should have, Serena decided to poke the bear. Goading him was far more entertaining, after all. She tilted her head slightly, a playful smile tugging at her lips, and said, "A date, huh? It’s almost midnight, Aiden, and you’re driving us straight into the boonies. Are you sure this isn’t some elaborate scheme to sacrifice me at an altar somewhere in the woods?"

Her words hung in the air for a moment, deliberately dramatic, and as she expected, Aiden shot her a withering glance.

But instead of acknowledging the glare, Serena acted as though she hadn’t noticed it at all. She turned her attention back to the window, her tone remaining light and teasing. "I mean, if that’s the plan, you could’ve at least given me a heads-up. I would have eaten well. As it happened I barely ate anything. What deity would accept a hungry sacrifice?"

Aiden’s fingers tightened on the steering wheel, his jaw visibly clenching as he let out a slow, measured breath. "Serena," he said, his voice low and edged with warning.

"Yes?" she replied innocently, glancing over at him with wide eyes, the picture of faux sincerity.

"You’re not funny."

"Oh, I think I am," she shot back, suppressing a grin. "Besides, if you’re really planning a midnight sacrifice, I feel like I at least deserve to know what for. Is it for some ancient god? Or just to appease your bruised ego?"

That earned her another sharp glare, and this time, she couldn’t quite stifle her laugh. "Relax, Aiden. I’m just trying to make conversation, seeing as you’ve been driving in moody silence for the past hour. Communication, you know? It’s a key part of relationships."

"Serena," he said again, this time with more of a growl, but she noticed the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth, betraying his struggle to keep a straight face.

So, he did have some of his humour left! Ha!

Finally, just when Serena was convinced that the silence between them would stretch on indefinitely, Aiden sighed heavily, breaking the quiet. Without taking his eyes off the road, he reached over and took her hand in his, his grip firm yet warm.

"Why didn’t you eat?" he asked, "I thought you had a dinner meeting."

Serena’s lips formed a pout as she turned her gaze to him. "Are you seriously going to pretend that you don’t already know why I didn’t eat dinner?" She arched a brow, daring him to deny it. "Fine then. Keep pretending." Of course it was because eating with Sidney would definitely give her indigestion.

With that, she yanked her hand free and turned her head toward the window, intent on ignoring him.

"What? Only you get to be jealous, and I don’t?"

Serena blinked in surprise and glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. Ha. Now he was talking. It took a lot of effort to suppress the smirk threatening to spread across her face but she almost wanted to scream Hallelujah!

"So, you are jealous?" she asked, nodding her head. "Good."

"Good?" Aiden shot her a quick look, his eyes flashing with indignation. "What do you mean, good? How is that good? Am I supposed to be happy that you’re meeting Sidney and not telling me? Why would you hide something like this from me? I asked you about it, Serena, and you hesitated. I noticed. And still, of all people—it had to be Sidney!"

His words came out in a rush, each sentence more agitated than the last. Serena turned back to him fully now, her brow lifting in disbelief.

"Wait. Are you trying to start a fight with me right now?" she asked, "Are you seriously saying you doubt me, Aiden? Over Sidney of all people?"

His grip on the steering wheel tightened, "Of course not!" he exclaimed. "Why would I doubt you? And this isn’t a fight. I have no intention of fighting with you."

"Then why," Serena said, her voice slow and deliberate, "are you yelling?"

Aiden froze mid-thought, his lips parted as if to respond, but no words came out. He blinked, visibly stunned, as though only now realizing that his voice had indeed been raised.

Serena tilted her head, watching his reaction with amusement as he processed what she’d said. Then, unable to resist, she reached over and poked his arm lightly.

"See?" she said, her tone dripping with mock sweetness. "You’re yelling. And here I thought you said you weren’t going to fight with me."

Aiden groaned, his head falling back slightly against the headrest as he let out an exasperated breath. "You are impossible, you know that?"

"And you," Serena said, leaning closer with a triumphant grin, "are adorable when you’re jealous. Sulking suits you, Aiden. You should try it more often."

"Don’t push your luck, Serena," he muttered, but his lips twitched, betraying the faintest smile he was fighting to suppress.

"But I am. Do you know what our mutual jealousy just taught us?"

It taught us something? Really?" Aiden shot her a skeptical glance, his lips twitching as he fought a grin. "And what exactly does it feel like to have heartburn?"

Serena giggled, leaning back in her seat with an exaggerated shrug. "That too," she admitted, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "But more than that, I meant it taught us that even though we feel all kinds of jealou about each other, we still trust one another. Isn’t that awesome?"

Aiden let out a low chuckle, shaking his head. "Awesome, huh? That’s the takeaway? Not the fact that you enjoy driving me crazy? Though me doubting you was out of the question."

"Oh, I do enjoy that too," she said with a cheeky grin. "Driving you crazy is like a bonus. Double the growth, double the fun."

He groaned, but the corners of his mouth betrayed him as they lifted into a reluctant smile. "You’re ridiculous."

"And you’re impossible to. Just like me. We are two peas in a pod. So," she began, breaking the comfortable silence once more. "Are you finally going to tell me where we’re going, or do I have to keep guessing?"

Aiden glanced at her, his eyes glinting with mischief. "You’ll find out soon enough. Be patient."

Finally, a little while later, aiden parked the car in a secluded spot. The first thing she heard or rather felt was the salty sea breeze and then heard the sound of the sea.

"You brought me to see the ocean in the middle of the night? You do realize I will see nothing."

"I brought you to see the moon in the sky, against the backdrop of this ocean. You can see the moon with me."

Serena smiled at that. See the moon. Okay. That was an interesting date. Staring at a round white thing that she had seen countless times. But then, he pulled out a small picnic basket.

"Wow. When did you have time to prepare this?" she asked, stepping closer to inspect the basket. "Was this before or after you decided to brood silently for an hour?"

Aiden grinned and winked at her. "Before. This is my ace weapon to remind you that I am the best for you."
