Chapter 264: How Come You Are...

"You lied."

Serena’s voice was cold, sharp, and unwavering. Her hand trembled as she gripped the passport tightly, but her gaze never wavered from the man standing a few feet away. His expression shifted from guilt to unease under her intense scrutiny.

"I may or may not be Serena Dawn," she began slowly, each word deliberate, carrying the weight of her distrust. "But you... you’re not Edwin Dawn. So, who are you? Why did you lie?" Her hand tightened around the passport as she added, "Because according to this, you’re definitely not Edwin Dawn."

Edwin raised his hands, palms out in a calming gesture, his voice soft but urgent. "Serena, listen to me. I can explain—"

"No," she cut him off, her voice firm and edged with anger. "Stay there and talk. Don’t come any closer."

The sting of betrayal felt like a vice tightening around her chest. Being lied to was already worrisome when she had no memories to guide her, but now, stranded in a foreign country with no clear escape and no one to rely on? It was something far worse. Her mind raced, trying to piece together his motives, but all she knew for certain was that she couldn’t trust him.

Her fingers dug into the edges of the passport as doubt crept in. It was a coincidence that their passports had been interchanged but now that she knew this man was not Edwin Dawn, she could not help but be suspicious.

What if her own passport wasn’t real? What if this man had orchestrated everything? What if going to the embassy only made things worse—what if they arrested her for carrying fake documents? After all, he’d already lied about being her brother. Who knew how deep his lies went?

"Serena, please," Edwin tried to come to her again.

"Don’t," she snapped, her voice rising. "Whatever excuse you have, save it. I want the truth, and I want it now."

He hesitated and his jaw tightened before he finally sighed. "Fine. I was born Edwin Dawn like I said," he said, his voice steady but laced with weariness. "But I was adopted. I believe I’ve already told you that. My parents named me Dale—Dale Brown. Here." He reached into his pocket, carefully pulling out a bundle of documents. "These are the papers. My name was legally changed years ago."

Serena didn’t move, her eyes narrowing as she studied the documents he held out. The explanation sounded reasonable, but something still felt off. Who carries around proof of a name change for no reason?

As if reading her mind, Edwin continued, "Because I knew this would happen. I knew you wouldn’t trust me, and I didn’t want you to think I was hiding anything. That’s why I brought them."

Her grip on the passport didn’t loosen. The truth, or what passed for it, was starting to surface, but her instincts screamed at her to stay cautious.

"Now," he said, his tone softer but no less firm, "can I have my passport back?"

"Not yet," Serena replied. Her voice was calm but unyielding. "First, I want to see mine. And then I’ll verify it—with the embassy."

Edwin’s expression faltered for a moment, but he quickly composed himself. He raised his hands again, signaling he meant no harm. "Alright," he said. "Your passport is in my back pocket. I’m going to take it out now."

Her eyes followed his every move as he slowly retrieved her passport and held it out to her.

"And about the embassy," he added carefully, "You can go if you want. But before you do, think about what might happen. If you contact them, there’s a good chance the authorities back home will be notified. That could be dangerous for you. I told you we are investigating the accident that you lost your memory in. If that happens and any wrong people are notified, whoever’s after you could find out exactly where you are—and that you’re alive."

His words froze her in place. Was he trying to warn her or manipulate her? She didn’t know, and that uncertainty only made her grip the passport tighter.

"Fine. I’ll handle my passport from now on and you will keep a distance from me. You will also update me on everything that you have found out until now."

Edwin hesitated, his expression troubled. "Serena... that’s not safe," he said carefully. "According to the doctor, if your memory returns too suddenly, it could be dangerous. That’s why he specifically advised against visiting places that might trigger strong memories. The damage to your nerve is too severe. Sudden stress could make things worse."

Serena grimaced, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "Fine then," she replied sharply. "Don’t give me names or details. Just tell me the basics. Who wants to kill me, and why?"

Edwin sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as though trying to ease some invisible weight. "Alright," he said reluctantly. "I’ll give you a general idea. But before I do, will you please put that vase down? You can keep my passport if it makes you feel safer. Just... put the vase down. You’ve got good aim, and I really don’t want to risk you slipping up."

Serena glanced down at the vase she’d been gripping tightly in her hand. Her knuckles were white from the pressure. She had been more than ready to smash it over his head if he made any sudden moves. She hesitated for a moment longer, weighing her options, before slowly lowering the vase back onto the table.

"Fine," she muttered, her tone still brimming with suspicion. She reached for her passport instead, holding it together with the other documents he’d handed over. She clutched them tightly and then with a quick glance around the room, she motioned to the long table between them. "Sit over there. Other side. Let’s keep some distance. And then talk."

Edwin didn’t argue. He nodded, moving slowly and deliberately to the chair at the far end of the table. He lowered himself into the seat, careful to keep his movements calm and unthreatening, as if any sudden gesture might reignite her suspicions.

With a sigh, he began," Your fiance wants to kill you."
